#2483380 Wings go to Mexico

Posted by ogreslayer on 11 February 2014 - 04:08 PM

This went from awesome to confusing. First of all, was nick even there? Secondly what beer were they actually drinking? Third and most importantly, where's Cleary?

Cleary fell down walking up to the bar

#2478037 Babcock's comments on playing time

In response to Babs' comment, I think this quote is quite appropriate.  (Read in a bad Irish accent for the full effect)

"I'll believe ya when me s*** turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet"

So assuming Andy is healthy tuesday do send Sheehan down and place Andy in his spot?

Additionally, if you could only have one of them on your team which would you rather have on your team long term?

I would prefer that when Andy is healthy, either Cleary or Bert gets waived.

#2477109 Sammy Waived

Posted by ogreslayer on 25 January 2014 - 04:12 PM

it gives us $100,000 cap relief but a much needed roster spoy. this is interesting thou as many reports say he wont be claimed on waivers, I got a hunch that Kenny has sounded some teams out about Sammy, they wont take on his salary but may thru waivers. He could do a contender a job on their 3/4 line maybe.

I think John Tortorella has a better chance of winning a Nobel Peace Prize than Sammy has of getting picked up on waivers.

Jurco with a breakaway that he almost always scores on....whistled offsides. Mickey wasnt happy.

And he wasn't happy for good reason.  Surprised FSD didn't show a replay at all:

Well, I'm not saying Mr. I had a gun to Holland's head and fingers in all his pies. I'm talking more about general accountability. You'd think a losing streak like this, for an organization like this, and coming after years of disappointment (we haven't been past the second round in "ages"), might at least warrant a "Ken, what's going on? This is unacceptable," or something to that effect. I mean, obviously it's kind of a stupid point because we don't really know much at all about Mr. I's "style" when he was younger and healthier, never mind now. But you see where I'm coming from, right?

Yeah, I see where you're coming from.  Who's to say though that those conversations aren't being had up & down the organization already though?  I think things would have to get really bad for us as fans to start hearing that from the higher ups in the Wings front office though because I don't think they're the type to air that kind of stuff in public.

For me, I think the biggest problem the Wings are facing right now is the fact that they lack definition as a team.  They don't quite have the personnel to be the puck possession team they've been for the past couple of decades & lack the type of players needed to be a true dump & chase/grind it out team too.  They're just stuck in the middle right now.  I've gotten the sense that the organization knew it had a couple of seasons at least where they needed to rely on band-aids on the roster as they tried to figure out what direction they were going in & restocked the prospect pool accordingly.  They've gotten pretty lucky in the past finding solid contributors off the scrapheap but sadly the odds seem to have finally caught up with them the past two seasons.  While it's painful to watch, I guess it's still better to see the Wing's form of struggling i.e. still thick in the playoff hunt despite everything, than to see them fall completely off the table into the Edmonton/Florida range of struggling.

This offseason will be pretty telling I think on how far along the front office feels they are in their rolling reload/rebuild of the team.  We should hopefully (fingers crossed) see the likes of Sammy, Cleary, Bert, Quincey, & Eaves (if not more) come off the books and have a rather significant wave of young players developed in the system come up to start defining what the Wings will be in the next decade+ instead having to wait another season or two for that.  That's why personally I think the most important person the Wings have in the organization right now isn't Holland, Babcock, a current roster player, or prospect, I think it's Jeff Blashill.  The job he does to develop those players in GR into NHL ready professionals is really the lynchpin for the youth movement that should be on the way.  In the meantime, I'm prepared to grit my teeth, keep watching, & stay ready to rage the first time I hear that Kenny's working on a contract extension for Cleary.  My $0.02 after another frustrating game.

1-0 Preds in OT after either Smith or Quincey bowls over Howie leaving Seth Jones an open net for the game winner.

Is that 3rd line officially nicknamed 1 kid & 2 anchors?

#2453833 Versteeg traded to Chicago

Posted by ogreslayer on 15 November 2013 - 10:31 AM

Think Kenny can convince Sammy to accept a trade to Florida in order to maximize his salary for the rest of the year due to the lack of state income tax?  Would Tallon go for Sammy for a package including one of Lebron's used headbands & a postcard of the Clevelander?

#2453636 Patrick Eaves on Waivers

Posted by ogreslayer on 14 November 2013 - 01:27 PM

Just checking to make sure I'm thinking right:  Tootoo can still be sent down since he's cleared, so this waiving Eaves is more for cap constraints than roster constraints.  Is this right?  Or are they planning on getting rid of Eaves or sending him down if he passes through and maybe bringing up Nyquist?  Or is it something else that I'm not getting?

The move is to fit Ericsson & Smith back on the roster which could happen as early as tomorrow for both.  Moving both Tootoo & Eaves to GR doesn't free up enough cap space to bring up Nyquist from the coverage I've seen.

#2451665 Are we faking injuries/illnesses to deal with the roster crunch?

If I understand correctly, they can be bought out at any time, but there was some sort of a special buy-out of which each team gets two in either of the two years following the lockout.

I'm not sure of the dates, but I was under the impression that the special buyouts were for during the off-season.  Hopefully one of our resident capologists will set us straight.

In any case, I think that if they were going to buy out Franzen, they'd have done it last summer.  There was the option of using both buyouts in the same year.

Buyouts can only be done during the ordinary course buyout period which starts on June 15th or 48 hours after the SC Finals end, whichever is later, and last until June 30th.  That's includes both regular & compliance buyouts.  The only exception to that is for teams that have at least 2 players (I believe it's 2 off the top of my head) go to salary arbitration.  There's an extra window that opens up for a couple of days after the team's last arbitration decision is handed down.  Buyouts can't be done outside of those periods.

For as much angst that was generated around Kenny not buying out Sammy this past summer, I'm thinking it might end up being a good thing that he didn't waste his second one on him in the long run.  Sammy's already gone at the end of this season & if Franzen continues to crap the bed, he very may well find himself the recipient of that second compliance buyout in June.  For all of the "look at the production the Wings get for his low cap hit" arguments, if he doesn't kick it into gear those will turn into some very loud "look what production we might be able to get IF we clear his cap hit (& Sammy's & Bert's, etc.) and sign a good free agent" comments soon enough.

#2451550 Mantha signed to ELC

Posted by ogreslayer on 07 November 2013 - 10:49 AM

Yeah, I'm not so sure Mantha is the "real deal."  Doesn't everyone tear up the juniors?

Maltby was a 50 goal scorer in juniors :D

As far as Mantha, I really don't see him projecting out as a power forward.  Much better chance that Martin Frk becomes the Wings' power forward of the future than Mantha.

So I really don't get this now.....if not then aren't they still in for the cap hit?

Yes, still in for the cap hit but this clears them up to just send him straight down to GR without waivers again I believe once Ericsson & Smith are back.

#2449278 It might be Illich, not Holland

My favorite part of this post.  "IF you come back down you'll be changed...".  Is there something going on I don't know about?  Do people frequently NOT come back down?  Returning from your meeting with the boss, changed or unchanged, shouldn't be something that's up in the air ya know?

Maybe that's a hint to the fact that Mr. Ilitch is a vampire or something.  "IF you come back down....mwaaaa haaaa haaaa..."

#2447140 Ouellet Debut Tonight

Posted by ogreslayer on 22 October 2013 - 11:06 PM

Color me impressed by the kid in his debut. After knocking Thornton on his ass, it makes me want to photoshop him onto an old Valiant Comics cover from my undergrad days (but I don't have photoshop) and give him the obvious nickname:

XO Manowar.

Link to cover of the first issue:

With initials like XO, does he possibly have an "A" on his jersey in the future?
