All these people saying we don't need Boyle because that won't win us a cup are like a broken record. Does adding Boyle guarantee us a cup? Obviously no. But what player is really out there that could do that? We have to start somewhere to fill our needs and I think he fills two of this teams needs immediately. Right handed shot....puck moving defenseman. End of story.
This is it guys! I knew it was coming soon but it's finally here! This is the sign for the Apocalypse the Bible was referring too! Why else would God let this happen unless this is it! Dan Clearly is the sign guys!
On a similar note, it's weird how Florida just butchers player development. A few years ago, Kulikov, Gudbranson, Robak and Petrovic were shaping up to be a pretty darn good defense core for the Panthers... they've all appeared to fall short of expectation.
Most likely because with the Panthers, prospects are thrust into starting roles before they understand the game and make mistakes, lose confidence and eventually fade out. One of the reasons we are so successful is because our prospects are prepared and confident when they finally get starting roles.
Is Smith a top 4 damn? No. Is he one of our 4 best? yes. He is supposed to be an offensive defensemen, but that would mean he scores more than 19 points in a season. he has the talent to be a guy that puts up 40-50 points a year, but it hasn't clicked yet. Just as Dekeyser should become a 30-40 point per year guy.
I think Smith will have a similar path that Ericsson had. Early in Ericsson's career he had flashes of brilliance laced with terrible defensive mistakes. He eventually learned the game and is now a solid defenseman. I think Smith has a bigger learning curve then we would like but I think the talent and potential is there. Give him one more full season and I don't think we will be discussing trading him.
I'm starting to feel old. Can't believe it's been that long. I started being a hardcore fan two years earlier in 95 when I was 8. I haven't missed a wings game since then. Still remember the night of Vladys accident. I was physically sick to my stomach and couldn't sleep and wasn't even old enough to really grasp the significance of that event.
Too small to become anything at the NHL level too bad because the talent is obviously there. The pick was a gamble some turn out well, others don't sad but it's n ot like the SEL is a bad league in fact they might be number 2 or 3 overall worldwide.
I don't write off people just because of their size. There are plenty of small players that have made it in the NHL that you would think had absolutely no shot.
I don't know why people keep throwing these big names out there for possible trades. The chances that Holland trades picks and prospects for a big name instead of trying to sign people for free after July 1st is slim to none. The only way he would trade for a Neal, or any other comparable player would be if a deal fell in his lap he couldn't refuse and that doesn't happen in the NHL anymore. We will try to sign a few free agents and maybe make a small minor trade or two but I don't see any blockbuster trades in our future.
I would package Nyquist in a trade for a proven sniper. Nyquist's stock is as high as it's ever going to be and although I think he is a good player, I don't see him sustaining his scoring like he did on his goal streak.
