Red Wings' Daniel Cleary cautions players to keep opinions to themselves: http://blogs.windsorstar.com/2013/01/04/wings-cleary-cautions-nhl-players-to-keep-opinions-to-themselves/ Agreed. After how no one knew about the mediator in the bargaining room until Bettman said it, no one has a clue of what's really going on. I suppose only the 10 or so players, Fehr, Bettman, rest of NHL officials know exactly what the real problems are. And I remember the 2005 NHL lockout unexpectedly ending at midnight. The 2011 NBA lockout ended at like 3 AM ET, few hours after ESPN twitter sources reported that "not much" was going on.

Honestly at this point I don't believe much of anything except for the most basic tweets about when and if they're actually meeting. There's been so much misinformation out there as everyone tries to break news. I'm tired from riding all the highs and lows. I have a feeling it'll come out of nowhere if a deal is done or the season is cancelled.

The mods don't want the incessant arguing over as to who is at fault for this whole mess of a CBA negotiation, including taking little pot shots at either side during a discussion of the cba. It has been beaten to death. Arguing over who cares or doesn't care about canceling the season is essentially the same thing. I'm fairly certain there isn't going to be any reputable source establishing people saying they do not care if the season is cancelled. As vladdy pointed out in one of her previous warnings, the discussion should be about details of the cba. It can also include updates from reputable sources, like Dreger or Lebrun's twitter.

Not in Detroit he wouldn't Can we please not make this into another "fire Bettman" vs. "fire Fehr" thread. I'm already pretty tired today and don't think I can handle all the excitement.

Which players will get bought out?

Fact is, if you will only be able to buy out 2 players, then some of these teams are going to have to buyout big contracts to get under the cap. you cannot buy out 6 players making less than $1M, so the are going to have to be some big names either dealt to the Phoenix's of the NHL for some draft picks, waived, or bought out.

Thats funny, I could say the same thing about Fehr and threatening decertification. Bettman and Fehr won't be stupid enough to cancel the season. There is too much riding on the season going forward, even in a reduced 48 game format plus playoffs.

Puck Daddy's story on the "Bettman ready to cancel season" reports quotes a story by Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press. Sounds like the league is taking a page from last lockout, in that they are offering a much better deal to the players now (in the interest of saving a season) than one they would be offering if/when the season is scrapped...

Decertificate already this thing is just nuts. 'The lockout didn't make any sense from the beginning and it just keeps getting better and better at some point all you can do is laugh at both sides.

pretty sure that's wrong. it's 2/3 majority who are present at the meeting look at page 25 of the document that kip linked to. it takes 3/4 majority or unanimous to make any most changes or amendments to the nhl constitution. so any powers that bettman was granted, it took majority of the owners to approve them.

Some of these suggestions are clear indications that a LOT of posters here live in make believe world... No team eats a MASSIVE amount of money, JUST to get under the cap, wastes their buyout on a guy who has an expiring contact before the cap goes down, or a guy that has a modest contract... the only obvious ones are Gomez, Thomas or DiPietro (if he were on a normal team, but it's the NYI, so they'll probably give him a bonus) Honorable mention to Leino, Redden, Jagr...

    Lidstrom - it is time

The man gave his heart and soul to the Red Wings organization for two decades. Everything about Nick's character alone makes this suggestion unrealistic and selfish. Enjoy retirement, #5.
