If the NHL gets serious about suspensions, which they FINALLY are, they don't need fighting anymore.
I'm ok with fighting being banned. If I wanted to watch fighting, I'd watch the UFC.

I honestly don't know what I would do if the NHL got rid of fighting. It has it's place in the game and is needed. Things would get a lot worse if players didn't have to worry about dropping the gloves, and there would be a lot more chespshots and bad hits...
While were at it why don't they start using a ball instead of a puck, it's a lot safer for players and goalies a like, and without fighting, might as well go mandatory full cage.

The Wings moving East brings the rivalry with Toronto back. That's all the reason we need to want this move. It's a logical move with the Winnipeg addition anyways. Keeps Winnipeg's travel down and puts the Wings where we want to be. A rivalry possibility with the Bruins would also be a huge draw.

It's mostly mocking the "but the Canadian teams have to stay together!" arguments that always pop up.
The best I can think of is having uneven divisions which are set up to minimize travel.
Something like this:
Pacific: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver
Central: Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg
Atlantic: New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Northeast: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
Southeast: Carolina, Columbus, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington
Obviously the Central division is kind of sprawling and would still see a lot of travel. But a setup like this makes divisions much more travel-friendly overall. Minnesota and Dallas in the Central see improvements in travel, as do most other teams around the league. Perhaps Chicago, Nashville, and St. Louis see worse travel; but that is the limit of it.
You also have of course noticed that there are five divisions. Two "western" divisions with 7 teams, and then three "eastern" divisions, two with 5 and one with 6. I didn't work out any specific schedule algorithm, but I think a setup like this would work. Seeding within conferences would work, and prevents any arguments regarding advantages of playing in a larger (or smaller) division.

For all of those who want to get all of the Canadian teams together, I have your solution.
Western: Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Phoenix, St. Louis, San Jose
Central: Buffalo, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Florida, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay
Eastern: Boston, Carolina, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Washington
Canadian: Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Top four teams in a division make playoffs. Divisional playoffs, division champs are then seeded by regular season record.
That way, those of you who don't like watching American teams play don't have to.

I am not a fan of the idea of moving to the East at all. I really think if they do that Columbus will go to the East and we will stay in the West in a newly formed Midwest/Central Division.

Obviously, interesting to see that the Red Wings aren't included in the Central. Wonder if this is just speculation on his part, or if plans are really laid out already.

It's not that it's not fair, it's that it's not logical to have an eastern times zone team playing in the West.

To me Nashville shouldnt even be part of the discussion. Theyre in the central time zone and should play against as many teams as possible in their time zone. It has to be between Detroit and Columbus and I have been crying for the Wings to switch Conferences for about 20 years now.

Red Wings need to stay in the West where they belong. Eastern is a ******* joke... it's like the retarded school for the dumb kids.

Unfortunately, I've seen interviews with Bettman where he has denied ever promising anyone a move to the Eastern conference, and I'm not sure a verbal "promise" to Jimmy D will hold up too long.
Ultimately, Bettman will probably realign the divisions in accordance with what's best for the overall NHL, not just one team who has been hoping to move for a while.
I'd love to be in the East, but in the scheme of things it really does make more sense for certain other teams to go east over us. Just my two cents, not trying to rain on any parades.

Eastern Conference move?
A couple other little items, but these two sound very promising!

I'll miss the Joe but thank god we're getting a new arena. The Joe is simply getting too old and isn't nearly as modern as other major rinks. As one of the biggest and most respected teams in the league we deserve a top quality arena to play in.

Are we still talking about this? Why it isn't going to happen. Let it go.
