NCAA Basketball Season

Wow some fan you are

No trust me this hurts pretty bad. I'm just being realistic.

EDIT: This team has been hurt all year by 3 things. Lack of seniors leading the way, a complete hole in the offense where they don't get the ball to Oden for stretches and the injury to Oden. Only one of those 3 things has been fixed. It's just not their year.

Just returned home from work and agh, I was so close in picking Xavier. I really thought that was a sure thing. Maryland also let me down by falling to Butler. Most of my opponents in my pickem league has Butler making it far so I want them out!!!!

Oh well...time to root on my Spartans. GO GREEN GO WHITE!!

 to my team. After losing Ager, Brown, and Davis in the offseason....I am not disappointed at all about this loss by Michigan State. In the end, MSU just got exhausted trying to keep up with UNC. The tar heels are going to be very hard to stop, especially Hansbrough. That kid is a tough as nails.

Drew Neitzel is going to have a helluva senior season next year and should be a front runner for the Big Ten player of the year next year.

It's funny you should mention Hansborough. I don't think the international space station travels as much as he does :)

I seriously thought MSU had a chance, but you're right, they just ran out of gas at the end.

day 4 and my bracket is now taped back together after an unfortunate result in the Xavier-Ohio State game.

Todays big games for me is Tennessee over Virginia. I got the Vols in the elite eight so that game has to happen for me. Also Nevada is my big underdog team today as I have them beating Memphis.

I've been out of touch with college basketball almost all season but I was able to watch a decent amount of the tourney yesterday.

The Ohio State-Xavier game was nuts. You root for the underdog in these kinda situations if you're the casual fan, but I was seriously impressed with how OSU kept clawing back when they could've easily folded middway in the 2nd half. Whoever made the 3-pointer (I don't know any of the players anywhere) to force overtime, it was one of those shots that you knew once it left the guy's hand, it was probably going in.

Wish I was able to watch more of Louisville/Texas A&M, that seemed like a good game, the same with the Pitt-VCU game. I've actually seen Virgina Commonwealth play a few times in my life, once against the Univ. of New Orleans sometime in the 90s, twice against my alma mater when I was still in college (one home game live, road game on TV) and they usually have decent basketball programs.

I watched most of UNC-MSU. It was a great effort by MSU, but North Carolina's depth and experience just eventually won out.

On the women's side, I flipped back and forth b/w the Wings game last night b/c of the referees making the game a joke to watch, and LSU's first game in the NCAA tourney. Both were painful to watch. LSU just eventually steamrolled their opponent about 15 minutes into the game, UNC Ashville, and won by about 40 points.

I'll be watching my alma mater TCU (10) play midday today against Ole Miss (7). No idea how good/bad either team is, but I think this is the 7th straight trip to the NCAA big dance for the women's team of my school. Never been able to get past the 2nd round.

Pop quiz, which of the following constitutes a foul against Tyler Hansborough?

1: Breathing on him

2: Looking at him

3: Being on the same court as him

4: All of the above.

Anyway, despite the loss last night, I'm very proud of how my Spartans did this season. They lost 3 players to the NBA draft and the general consensus was it would be a down year for MSU. Instead they hang with the Heels most of the game. Like Timothy said, MSU just ran out of gas.

The thing I liked most about this season was that this was a classic Izzo team. Defense and rebounding. I love seeing it. Supposedly MSU has a great recruiting class coming in next year. The Spartans don't rebuild, they reload ;)

And I'm sad to see Tommy Turtleneck go :(

Re: Amaker - I think the firing comes at the right time, but Michigan fans oughta thank Amaker anyway, as he did a yeoman's job with a program that had fallen on the worst of times.

Now - go 'Hoos! Beat Tennessee.

I agree...Amaker is a class act. Martin said it was the hardest choice he has ever made while being at U-M. The move had to be done though. It will be interesting to see who they go after. Will they go after the big name or the upcoming? My short list is Chris Lowery from Southern Illinois, and Rudy T.

UM isn't going to get a good coach unless the university shows an actual commitment to the sport.

While Amaker fell short of helping his team reach its goal, the school has not appeared to live up to its contractual commitment to improve perhaps the Big Ten's worst basketball practice facilities.

"We've already hired a consultant to work on the infrastructure at Crisler Arena," Martin said. "And if a coach makes a major issue out of not having a practice facility yet, then they're probably not the right coach for Michigan.

Translation: if a coach doesn't like our facilities, tough s***.

Considering this quote from the article

Martin, a now-deceased former booster, told the federal government he lent $616,000 to ex-Wolverines Chris Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor and Louis Bullock in what the NCAA said was the largest financial scandal in its history.

UM is lucky they have a basketball team. A smaller school probably would have gotten a SMU style death penalty.

If they promise to build some facilites within a certain amount time, and give them some extra money a coach will come.

I agree with Dicky V...

"Trust me, there will be a number of big names interested in this position. You can win at Michigan, and with improved facilities you can attract big-time athletes to help compete"

Big names? Maybe John Calipari or Mark Few??

I don't think you'll get Calipari, but Few is a possibility. So is the guy (Bennett?) from Washington State.

If I were Michigan, I'd be looking for a good young coach from a Mid-Major instead of a big name. It's certainly worked out for teams like Ohio State (Matta), Pittsburgh (Howland) and Tennessee (Pearl although he isn't exactly young). Getting a younger guy in there will give the program a new energy....

I agree on the young coach. Chris Lowery from Southern Illinois is my top choice, along with Bennett from WSU. If they go for a older coach I want Rudy T, or West Virginia's coach. If U-M opens their check book I actually think Calapari isnt that far out of the question, but I agree probably won't happen.

Anyone who watched MSU play this season saw a helluva improvement in both Neitzel and Morgan. Scary to imagine how they are going to be next year. MSU easily is a contender for the Big Ten title especially if Oden leaves OSU.

I don't know if opening the checkbook to get Calipari would be a good idea at this point. But then again, sometimes you need a big splash.

Another guy I'd watch for would be Sean Miller from Xavier. He is a great coach as well as yesterday proved.

I was thinking that as well, but I think after he blew the game against OSU I think that automatically removes him from the list.
