I have been lurking on here for years but I felt it was time to trash Nashville a little bit going in to the playoffs. The notion that Nashville is anything close to a "hockey city" is totally absurd. The only place you need to look to prove this is ESPN.COM and NHL.COM where all the official attendance numbers are reported. This franchise should never have been started in this city period. Just another prime example of the league over-expanding. If this team can't bring out the fans this season how can they really hope it will survive at all in the long term?

Let's take a quick look at the attendance data....

The Nashville Predators rank 21st overall in attendance if you figure it as a % of capacity. And by using this statistic I am really giving them the benefit of the doubt because they have one of the smaller arenas in the league at 17,113. That means they have to sell almost 3,000 less tickets than the Red Wings to get a sellout. Add to that the fact that the numbers these struggling teams report to the league are often heavily inflated by group tickets sold to corporations or sponsors at a major discount. Sure, Nashville fans will point out all the empty seats at JLA on a given night. They might be empty, but for the most part these are 100% full price season tickets that simply are going unused. That being said let's check out some recent Nashville games. Keep in mind this is a team that is being considered as a possible favorite to win the cup this year....

1/9/07 VS Anaheim 11,821*

1/18/07 VS Columbus 10,927

2/8/07 VS Toronto 15,018*

2/14/07 VS San Jose 13,836*

2/19/07 VS Phoenix 15,862

2/22/07 VS Montreal 15,808*

*I think these games are the most disturbing.

As someone who has been on skates and a fan of the game since I was 5 I really have to wonder how this league can truly be succesful in the long run in markets like Nashville if their fans can't even support the team when it is doing fantastic in the standings. Just another reason why I hope we steamroll these fools in the playoffs. Their fans and the city of Nashville simply don't deserve a long run at the cup and it's questionable if they even deserve to have a team period.

K, I realize you're new, but you just spent a ton of time and effort saying things which get said more or less ad nauseum. I've argued against everything you say a hundred times already, and forgive me if you haven't seen them before but I'm awfully tired of saying it. So I'll just bring up these questions:

1) What about New Jersey?

2) How is 15,862 in a 17,000 arena a bad thing, especially when playing one of the crummiest, least interesting teams in the league? On a Monday night, no less.

Add to that the fact that the numbers these struggling teams report to the league are often heavily inflated by group tickets sold to corporations or sponsors at a major discount.

And bonus question number 3, You realize that the main problem in Nashville is that there isn't any corporate support of that type, right? So in light of that, wouldn't you say it's impressive that Nashville has these kinds of numbers without the corporate support enjoyed by other teams in the league?

General stereotypes that are untrue piss me off.

Whether it's thinking everybody down South is a hillbilly or redneck, or whether it's thinking everybody in the Detroit area is a crackhead or criminal. It isn't true and general accusations annoy the hell out of me and make the poster who says it look like an idiot.

It's 20/20 hindsight b/c the people who think make fun of Southerners down here thinking we are dumb rednecks, or don't want hockey anywhere outside of Michigan, Minnesota, or Canada, are the same ones that get all out of shape of false accusations of Detroit being a dump for miles and miles when it isn't.

You forgot about the Islanders. I was thinking when I made the post that the two biggest holes in my argument were New Jersey and the Islanders...hahaha...I mean 12,000 a night for a playoff team, that is pathetic as well. Newbie advice to self: do not argue with your own post.

Thank you betterred and SouthWF. It's posters like you and a few others that are ever so slightly makiing me change my view of the arrogant elitist wings fans. However there are always the jokers who think they know all and insist on using the dumb redneck remarks and telling us how we shouldn't have a team or that we are moving, blah, blah, blah.

betterRed, thank you for pointing out the falsity of the large number of tickets sold to corporations. Not happening in Nashville, our individual seaon ticket holders make up the majority, 70% I believe, of all ticket sales.

Also, even if we sold out our tiny arena every game we would still only rank around 17th in attendance.

Well I agree with the respect Yzerman part. I can deal with Wings-haters just fine, but for some reason when someone starts talking s*** about Stevie Y, it's like your talking s*** about family.

This is an example of the nature of Nashville fans. A true story that happened to me on Feb. 24th. I hate the Predators all from this happening.

This past Friday I traveled from Garden City, MI to Nashville, TN t watch a game in the Gaylord Ent Center on Saturday night. After 9 hours of traveling and a night of hardcore county bar drinking we attended the game Saturday night. I sat right in the center of Predators season ticket holder terratory. My lady and myself looked forward to the game for 2 weeks. In the first 10 minutes of sitting we were told repeatidly to go home and to take off our jersey's or we will, "Get it!" Among my friends that I normally attend away games with I am not considered quiet by any means, so ofcourse I did not hold my tounge. Nor was I rude, hell it was only me and my girl.

To make a long story short, throught the game we were sneered, mocked and ridiculed. Not in a friendly compitition way either. They called my girl a **** and her jersey reprsented a ***** house light! I wento use the bathroom and recieved paper towel, wet, dirty, paper towel thrown at me repeatidly. I am a cocky wings fan like most so by mid second period I started talking back. The man said t me he can't believe that their greatest rival's were sitting right next to him. So I stood, a little nervous, and made a speech. "Your greatest rivals...PLEASE! In the 9.5 years you have had a team in your inbreed town we have proudly lifted 3 Stanely Cups!" I took a moment and asked if there was any questions as to what a stanel cup was. At this point I had beer cups thrown at me and pretty sure called eve name in the book. I then said, "Your team is nothing but a pesky misquito on our shoulder." I was booed so hard that my friends on te other side of the arena heard it! I quieted with nervousness that I wouldn't walk out, I would probably be handcuffed or stomped Pistons style.

Between the second period we were followed through te breezeway and ridiculed the whole team. Some druk guy with two teeth stopped and yelled in my face... "You suck! Your team sucks! Go home!" Then he spit aa nasty snot filled ball of ooze on my Yzerman jersey.

I ave never been treated so pourly in my life. I never had to restrain so hard from fighting! I am just wondering how many others have experianced this. I have been to a few games in the Joe and never treated and opposing fans so badly. I am glad that we as fans are better people.

I think that teams like Nashville should respect where they came from. Respect that we are a pillar of the NHL. And they should damn sure respect my Yzerman sweater!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the spelling. Very happy to be a member of the greatest fan base in pro sports.

Dude, sorry to hear that. You were in Section 107, right? I was sitting on the other side of the ice and a friend of mine was in that section and told me about it the next day. Said it was embarrasing. Please know that not all Pred fans are like that. I'll talk trash to ya if you show up wearing red but it's in a good natured sort of way. (don't want you to be too comfy in our barn :) )

The Nashville Predators need your help! We are trying to sell out two weekday games later this month & can't do it without your help.

Not saying that doesn't happen. What I mean is, there aren't big corporations buying up blocks of tickets to give to their clients or partners, etc. Given the Wings' ticket prices, I doubt the Joe would sell out every game either without discounts like that, if they didn't have corporate support.

You people can be ridiculous. Let's make this simple. Is Nashville like Detroit at this point yet? No.

But what was Detroit like when we first got a team? I honestly have no idea about the attendance in those days because no one ever talks about it. And besides, before Illitch began turning this team around, we were the Dead Wings and no one came the games. Do you think the league should have contracted us?

Nashville is still blossoming into a hockey market against considerable odds. The people who complain about Nashville are the same people who non-chalantly claim that Columbus should be contracted. What people dont realize is that considering Columbus' performance the attendace has been first class.

you're mixing up arrogance with pride . most people on here are proud of this team and when other cities trash us and we defend them using the championships people say we're arrogant.

No but a lot of y'all seem to act a lot like Dallas Cowboys fans used to in the heydays. A lot of them forget the hard times or jump on the bandwagon in other cities because they are the sucessful team at the time. I've met a lot of Wings fans that were cool and a lot that were arrogant and talked about how the Wings were the pillar of the league. Sometimes your fans are your own worst enemy.

When I was at the game on Tuesday I counted four individuals in Predators sweaters that I could see. One on the glass in our section, two on the opposite side of the arena, and a late-arriving one that sat a section over from us.

Let's just say that the late-arriving fan got a proper reception with a healthy round of loud booing (in a playful way), and was getting ribbed by the people sitting all around him and his (non-jersey wearing) friend.

He was giving it back 100% (bowing, waving to the fans, etc.) and was also doing it in a playful, good-natured way.

Believe me, if you wear an opposing jersey in another barn you can expect it -- but at least be a good sport about it, and both parties were Tuesday.

Don't let the little kids who got a hold of Daddy's computer bother you folks. It's better if you don't respond. They just want a reaction. Instead of responding to the post, hit that nifty little report button on the bottom of the post. That notifies any mod on line and we'll take care of it.

*Edit* I had to delete the posts. Preds fans defending Wings fans was just a little too surreal for me.

Try on this quote for size..

The people at first were saying, "Why is there a team in Nashville?" But when you come here and you see the fans and the excitement, my question would be, "Why would there not be a team in Nashville?"

Nashville has a great team and just like the success in Carolina, I think that people will become fans over time.

I hate it when people use the bandwagon term because we all became fans at some point.

For instance, I find baseball boring but since the Tigers did so well last year I decided to start watching them. That makes me a bandwagon fan, but better that than no fan at all, right?

OTOH, I think Wings fans have the right to be very proud of our team, the history, and the success we have enjoyed the last decade or so. That doesn't mean we need to be arrogant, but if a fan of another team says that we suck I personally have no problem telling him he's an idiot because of our 3 Cups (and I was in Detroit each time we won it, so I feel my devotion affords me some prideful words).

Alright. Nashville is an excellent city. Filled with wonderful people, and a great night life. I just find it funny that Red Wing fans have to be ridiculed by other Red Wing fans on a RED WING forum. This is the place where a wing fan should be able to vent about whatever they would like! Nashville is a great team that has brough in a fan base by creating a rivilry with US. I have gone to games in Nashville since first moving to Ft Campbell, that has been 5 years. In five years Nashville has dedicated money to making fun of the wings. Every chant is against the Wings, almost every skit on the jumbo tron is about the Wings (these year there were alot less). They made fun of the Wings being old, slow, and stupid. They have used radio shows and other forms of advertising to make fun of Wings fans. They have created a rivalry with us through advertising, not through intense battle on ice. Not through games like we have had with the Avalanche! With some of the original six team! The chose to pick the Wings for their "advertising rivalry", we did not chose them. We have had great games with the Preds but not lengandary games. So why if they chose us as a Rivalry may we not attack back in a forum created for WINGS FANS. This is not the politically correct forum for hockey fans to be nice to one another. So have fun with your comments. You see what they say about us so why can't we say anything back. Seriously I don't refer to any Nashville citizen a red neck or that the do their sisters. Nashville is a great city with some of the nicest people I have encountered (besides at the GEC). BUT it is not wrong for our loyal fans to do so if it they like in a FORUM FOR THE DETROIT REDWINGS FANS!!!!! Also it is interesting to have Nashville fans make an appearance in here. I did not expect that. That goes to show that there are some fans in Nashville that have embraced the sport of hockey. There are alot of other teams in the NHL that should leave the league well before the Predators do! Oh and finally the Wings are a pillar of hockey, along with the rest of the original six.~~~~my thoughts

This is basically saying that it's okay for the KKK to hate black people, as long as they do it in a place that is set up expressly for the KKK's use...

Anyway, i'm not trying to argue with you, just wondering what you base your comments on? I'm generally on top of anything and everything related to the predators that goes on in this city and i've never seen or heard of the Preds spending money to make fun of the Wings. I've never heard radio shows or seen other forms of advertising that you claim are used to make fun of the Wings. I have seen skits on the jumbotron, but only during Wings games. They have different skits for every opponent. And we modify different chants for different opponents.

The only Wings specific chant is the one that goes along with the Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop" modified into "Red Wings Suck" and of course the Ay! Oh! Wings Blow! instead of Ay! Oh! Lets Go!. And even then they've only been playing it when we score 5 goals and then it becomes Ay! Oh! TA-CO! because of the taco bell promotion of getting a free Taco whenever the preds score 5.

You might be seeing something that I don't, but please direct me to it. Tell me what to look for.

Also, how many games do you go to? Is it just when the Wings are in town? That would explain a lot about why you think we're so over the top obsessed with wings bashing. But either way, they ARE our biggest rival, so it only makes sense that they recieve the bulk of our attention.

Actually on the skits on the Jumbotron... they do that for every team not just the Wings and tend to over do the one's about teams in the division. Have you been to any games others here besides Pred's-Wings games? They really diss the Blues, Jackets, and Hawks too.

Also we didn't just choose y'all as a rival, you became one by having the target of being the team to beat for so many years. Having all of the Michigan transplants in the area also helped that turning half the place red in the early years of the team, Not a lot of fun to be the home team in that situation.

The Wings have had some high profile veterans that were getting long in the tooth in the last several years as well (Stevie Y, Hullie, Chelios, Larry Murphy, etc.) and why not diss on it when you have a system stocked with a lot of youth and skill to build upon w/ the fanbase for the long-term as Nashville has done. They are building a fan base for Nashville and not Detroit and want them to see a bright future of a team that will be here when they take their kids and grandkids to the games.

On the pillar quote, I mis-read and thought you were saying the Wings were the pillar of hockey. The only organization historically that could make that claim would be the Montreal Canadiens is what jumped out at me. But a lot (not all either) of Wings fans tend to think all good in hockey begins and ends from the Joe and gets kinda old. I could see where people could take exception to something like that. Then again when I was a kid growing up in STL, I never found a Hawks fan I liked until I went to college in Tennessee. Guess i needed to grow up to see a bigger picture. Maybe that's also the case we have in Nashville in terms of hockey fans as well.

As far as checking out the other teams boards, it's fun to see what they are into and who they dislike and what misnomers about us they have and maybe dispell some of those. We get a huge kick out of watching people come here in the summer for Fan Fair wearing cowboy hats and boots thinking they'll fit right in. Just makes them easier to spot as a tourist.

Plus you get to trade barbs w/ other teams fans and find respect for each other as well. I also find myself on the Blues board a lot because I had a lot of history there too. But I live in Nashville now and the only way I'll get to have NHL hockey for myself and share it with my two kids as they grow up is to support it and the team in the community in which I live is why I cashed in my winged-note for the buck-toothed kitty.

I think maybe my post was misread. Or I am just drunk. Who knows. I tried to not come off as making striff with Preds fans. I meant that it is cool to get another teams fans insight on this forum. I also tried saying that if a wings fan wanted to make jabs at a preds fans this is where he should be able to do it without being put down by other wings fans. I mean pred fans put us down it is just the way it is. Also, yes the only games I have been to in the GEC was detroit games so I may have been a bit out of line there. I also think I praised how wonderful the city of Nashville is, and the people that subside. I think that a back woods stereo-type is not fitting for Nashville. My thoughts~~

Heres what the Cellblock(section 303 at the GEC where the stupid chants come from) has to say about the upcoming games Tues and Wed

Cellmates and Predheads,

The Preds have now gotten points in 10 straight games (despite a rash of injuries), garnering 17 out of a possible 20 points. And with Detroit's loss to Boston yesterday, Nashville retains a 3 point lead over them while also maintaining the best recored in the Western Conference and best recored in the entire NHL.

With the Predators' 2-1 win over Columbus (which also completed an 8 game sweep of the season series), they are now 28 games over .500 for the first time in their history. You might recall that is the same amount of wins the Predators had in each of their first two seasons. Yet another indicator of how far this team has come in just 8 seasons, and a testament to the vision and patience of Leipold, Poile, and Trotz in sticking with "The Plan" to build from within. It is reaping huge benefits now.

This week is one of the most important in regular season history for the Predators with two games vs. Detroit (Tues./Wed.) and Saturday night vs. The Dallas Scars--a potential first round playoff opponent. It appears that Peter Forsberg and Steve Sullivan may be back in the line-up for these games--and it couldn't happen at a better time!

Just as we expect the Preds to bring their "A" game...so should we as fans. It's time to really get our lungs loosened up for the most important time of the hockey season. Let's let 'ER rip all night long starting with the Dead Things Tuesday!

TOP TEN REASONS THE DETROIT WING DINGS SUCK:

10. The city that brought us the Edsel, the Rambler, and the Pinto has to divert their shame to a "Hockey Town" moniker.

9. Red rhymes with Ted…and Nugent makes us ill.

8. Leipold is shipping in 20 million gallons of Visine to flush the GEC and get the red out!

7. They make more excuses than Lee Iococa.

6. Chelios and Schneider are still looking for walkers that have skates attached.

5. When they hit the ice, they look like a convention of department store Santas

4. The 8 legs of their octopus equals their cumulative IQ.

3. The color of their uni’s matches the shade of their lipstick.

2. A wing sticking out of a tire--no wonder the foreigners have built better automobiles.

1. Detroit is the Murder Capitol of the USA, but the Dead Things will get KILLED in Smashville!

MORE REASONS:

• Bill Lambier, Mark Aguire, Vinnie Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, John Salley, Dennis Rodman….

- Had the Japanese auto industry completely taken over the city, the team's name would've been pronounced "Led Rings."
