WingsZR2 1 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 +40 over a + 6. I'll take the guy thats on the ice when his teams scores not when the other team scores. Lids has 7 less points and 40 less PIM. Lids wins his 5th, the homers at ESPN don't know jack.
aarond 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 Lidstrom will win it. But to be objective, Pronger was the best D-man in the league this season. If he didn't get hurt, I think he would have won it for sure.

I would be suprised if I got any wrong. The only one I was iffy on, was the Jack Adams award. But I think Buffalo's outstanding regular season play, and the fact that they are still playing, and looking like Cup favorites, locks it up for Ruff. puertoricanWingsfan 5 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 Lidstrom may not be the biggest, and he may not hit the hardest, but he is unquestionably the smartest defenseman there is. He's always in the right place at the right time, he's got incredible stick work, and did anyone see the sure-fire goal he saved in the third period last night?!? Guest GodofHockeyStevieY19 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 Absolutely no doubt about it. Nicky boy will definitely be putting another trophy on his mantle. 5th Norris. Unbelievable. And many forget that Lidstrom was the runner-up for the 3 consecutive seasons before his first Norris Trophy win. The dude is unreal. A joy to watch and to have as Captain. Its a lock for Nick. vladdy16 2,154 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 While my vote would definitely go to Lids, I don't think they're going to see fit to give it to him this year. He's been thrice blessed. I say they pass him over.

wingfanatic4alltime 32 Report post Posted May 1, 2007 i was shocked when i saw haseks name not on the vezina list. maybe i was being a homer there but i believe hasek had maybe the 3rd best goals against average and he isnt on the list. But Nolan not being a finalist for the jack adams award as interminded said is mind boggling.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted May 2, 2007 WHAT THE HELL THESE TWO SELKE TROPHY FINALISTS DID IN THE SEASON??? Samuel Pahlsson 8 18 26 -4 Jay Pandolfo 13 14 27 -5 It's unbelivieble My thoughts exactly. Grrr... Man, I can't get over this BS. How can Z NOT be recognised somehow for his amazing post all-star play? He outpaced every other player in the league and was the talk of the NHL, now he's chopped liver compared to those two clowns? 06TJSport 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2007 In my opinion, +/- should almost be a non-factor in determining the best defensive forward. Here is my nonsense hypothetical example: Player A - job is to shut down the other teams' best offensive players, that's all the player does all year...defensive specialist. At the end of the year, he is held pointless, but he did his job and did not allow a single goal to be scored while he was on the ice, his year ending +/- is 0. Player B - go to offensive guy, doesn't really concern himself with playing in his own end (hovers around the red line most of the time when the puck is in his team's end). This player has an outstanding offensive year and finishes with 145pts (all even strength...quite remarkable ) At the same time, because of his lack of defensive play, he was on the ice for 85 goals against, resulting is a year ending +/- stat of +60. So, Player B has the vastly superior +/- stat, but I think it is obvious who the better defensive player is. do you have any idea how +/- is calculated its not "points - the amounts of goals against you were on the ice for" it is the amount of goals for you were on the ice for minus the goals against that were on the ice for excluding times your team was short handed So yes, +/- does matter because Player A in your scenario would luck into being on the ice for goals even if he did not touch the puck the entire shift and get a +1 for it. And player B would be much more than a +60 and he could even get more points on the power play to add to his +/- stat

But Nolan not being a finalist for the jack adams award as interminded said is mind boggling. It wasn't any "playing favorites" out there that mysteriously kept Dom off the list--he played well this season, but he played only 56 games. And surely now someone is saying, "But that's a lot of games! He's 40+!" And that's quite right. He sure is his age and 56 is a good accomplishment for the man. And it's also quite right that he had a good GAA and had 7 SOs in that span. Again though, 56 games does not a Vezina goaltender make here. We're talking cream of the crop goalies who have the ability to play without risk of season-ending injury, making them the best. Henrik is the baby of the bunch with 70 games under his belt for the regular season.

I used points, but my assumption was that neither player was on the ice for any goals scored that they didn't get points on. I know it is not realistic, but neither is the entire scenario, it was simply to make a point.
Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted May 2, 2007 Lids deserves yet another Norris, that's for sure. I think if there was an award for best Offensive Defenceman then Niedermayer might win, but Nick greatly outplayed him in terms of defensive ability. Plus Nick's + - rating is all the proof you need. I also think that Zetterberg not being nominated for the Selke is bogus, even if he did miss a big chunk of the season.

Henrik is the baby of the bunch with 70 games under his belt for the regular season. I've said all year that limiting Hasek's games would put him out of contention for a Vezina. Most of the six years he won it, he played all but a few games, just like the current goalies in line for the Vez. It's a shame he will get no recognition for his accomplishments this season, but that's the reason he's not considered. Who knows if he would have gotten injured playing more? I kind of doubt it, but it wasn't worth the risk, in any case. Dom won't care, I bet. While individual awards are nice, I suspect he prefers the big team award -- the Cup! We're talking cream of the crop goalies who have the ability to play without risk of season-ending injury, making them the best. Henrik is the baby of the bunch with 70 games under his belt for the regular season. You've got some serious issues. Hasek played in 58 games in '94 and won the Vezina. He had more shutouts this year and his GAA was 1.95 to 2.05 this year. Kiprusoff and Lundqvist had 13 and 14 more losses each this year. If Hasek had played in 14 more games and lost them all, would he fit your idea of what "a Vezina goaltender make here"? Certainly Brodeur or Luongo are the clear 1-2 but Dominik is a clear number 3 based on his season...apparently, as I said, giving up almost half a goal more per game is excuseable as long as you have played and lost 14 extra games. 13dats 1 Report post Posted May 2, 2007 Where do they get Pahlsson and Pandalfo for the Selke? I mean, these guys are decent defensive forwards in their own right, but Zetterberg and even Datsyuk are better choices, since they are some of the best all around players in the league. And no, this is not the homer side of me either. Considering both of them do just about everything, and Datsyuk even led the league in takeaways, at least a nomination would be nice. You are absolutely right!
Kira 451 Report post Posted May 2, 2007 You are absolutely right! I could have told you that Henrik wouldn't get nominated because of all the time he missed at the end of the season, but for Pasha not to even get a sniff at it is puzzling and frustrating. I'm tickled pink that he is nominated for the Byng again, but I think when it comes to the Selkie, he got screwed, blued and barbecued. It's so not fair. One other thought: Dmitriy, do you think he'll show up for the ceremony this time? I'd kill to see Pasha in a tux!
