55fan 5,133 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 What would you do with the extra money of gas being at least $1 cheaper? The same thing I've done with the extra $40 a week since I don't smoke any more. I'd look at my bills and my financial situation and say, "Hey! I'm supposed to have some extra money! Where's my extra money? I don't have any extra money! Why don't I have extra money?" (repeat weekly) Also, I'm old enough to remember cheap gas. We just pay for it. It isn't a matter of extra money. The rise in price of gas is pretty similar to everything else. Think about it: in 1984, I got $3.25/hour. Now I get $11.67 at one job and $8.60 at the other. That's roughly 3x what I used to make. Compare bills: Rent in 1984: $85. Now: $270. About 3x. Lights in 1984: $15. Now: $50. About 3x. (Note: this is only my electricity bill. It does not include heat.) Cigarettes in 1984: $1.75. Now: $5.01. About 3x. Postage stamp in 1984: $.22. Now: $.44 (I think). Only 2x. Hmm, so much for the maligned postal service. As for food, I don't remember much, but around 1980 I was sent up town for a box of cereal and a loaf of bread and I lost one of the two dollars mom gave me, but I went to the day-old bread store for the bread and got them both for a dollar. Gas: About $.75/gallon. Now: About $2.75. Again, about 3x. All of these things totally depend on where you live. I'm willing to bet that big city folks and people from civilized areas pay a lot more for much of this, but I bet they make a lot more too. It's the price you pay for living in a better climate and not in the sticks. In short, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
WizardOfOz30 1,886 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 Wow Karen, you're good with all those figures. I remember when gas was under $1 too, I think when I started driving it was just over and it's slowly creeped up ever since. Someone in the office sparked this conversation this morning: Do those little single serving cream containers have an expiration date? It makes you wonder, it is cream yet it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Yes they have an expiration date but its usually pretty far out, so what the heck are we drinking? Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 That's usually something I wonder about the little butter containers (for lack of a better word) on restaraunt tables.
Jenny 315 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 There's a cable technician out in the living room trying to convince Casey that our cable box works just fine. Even though our cable box doesn't work, which I proved earlier by plugging the cable from the wall directly into the TV. That worked, we just didn't get the digital channels without the converter box because it's an older TV. Now the guy is trying to tell Casey we must have changed a setting. Even though the TiVo successfully recorded something at 3 AM and then just didn't work at 7 PM after we'd been at work and school all day. I'm hiding out in the other room because if I were in there I'd be yelling at the cable guy for condescendingly telling us to try everything we already tried. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 Your tv was working earlier, and now it isn't, and a cable guy is there this week already? I guess you got speed over quality. Good luck.
Jenny 315 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 (edited) It was actually yesterday that we had the problem and called in, so it wasn't as instant of service as it sounded like! But anyway, the cable tech accomplished nothing and somehow rebooting the TiVo solved the problem. No, I can't explain it, I just hook up the wires as required and the electric pixies deliver hockey to my TV. Edited October 30, 2010 by Jenny

HOCKEY MATTERS 167 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 I am criminal. Repeat offender, actually. I live within the city limits and there is an ordinance against burning leaves. I did it again today. I wheeled my portable fireplace out in the back yard and commenced to committing my crime. As I am defiantly breaking the law, a County Sheriff cruised slowly by. He must have saw my shovel and garden hose next to the crime scene, cuz he waved and kept driving. Either he doesn't give a crap about the burning ordinance, he likes the smell of yard waste on fire, or he recognized my safety-minded approach to crime. Jenny 315 Report post Posted October 31, 2010 Aw, I'm sorry you're unhappy. There was a guy sitting behind us at last night's game who had a voice like a nutmeg grater, who kept telling his grandson(?) tidbits of hockey history during the game. He was the sort of guy who seems to think his heart will stop beating if he stops talking. We never actually heard the little boy say anything. Anyway, at one point, the sound guy played "Let's Twist Again," and I heard the guy tell the kid that the arena was named after the man who sung this song! *facepalm* Chubby Checker Arena, y'all. I don't play video games, but that sort of music brings out the desire to slam things into boards and knock people's teeth out in me as well.

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) I have a hot date tomorrow, but have already started growing my Movember mustache and don't want to shave. Decisions decisions. Keep the 'stache and explain Movember to her. If she is any sort of a good woman at all, she will be thrilled by your social awareness. If she doesn't like you with a mustache, then ditch her. You may want to grow one permanently some day. You just never know. I really need to get rid of mine too. Shave, pluck, or wax? That is the question...
