Monday night I got off early enough to see the pregame and Alanis. I just would like to share my thoughts on this.

I have been to the Joe, the Gaylord entertainment Center, and to a pistons and tigers game this year. I have seen the National Anthem sang at all.

To watch the Canadians show the upmost respect for the Anthem was enough. Around here you can't even get people to stop talking, walking or selling. Then I was even more impressed to see when she sang the Canadian anthem that EVERYONE was standing, singing and when she held out the mic it was the loudest I have ever heard an Anthem sang. I just seen alot of pride that it seems we as American people lack lately.

Also, hockey is everything up there. I love that! Unfortunatly they don't seem to have a winning hockey team. :(

Considering most of the Canadian NHL cities have had a situation in the past few years where a large number of fans in attendance booed the US anthem, your sweeping generalization doesn't work.

Plus that FREE healthcare... ;)

I loved the anthem too. I think Oh Canada is just a great anthem... except for the French part. Just think we may be doing that only in Spanish soon here in the U.S.

Rock on Canada!

and American cities have NEVER booed the Canadian anthem right? This message brought to you by an American fan who has more than a one sided prospective.

I must say that I went to a Blackhawk/Wing game this year, and I was very dissipointed that at the United Center they had the Canadian flag but neglected to sing "O Canada." Every AHL game I have been to starts with both anthems being sung. I like "O Canada" and am proud to know all the words. I think it should be sung at every hockey game, it is their natonal sport after all, and they are in the NHL it would just be respectful if you ask me.

i'm not sure any canadian city has ever booed the american anthem. so unless u have some proof, you are wrong. i do recall tho the san jose sharks fans booing the canadian anthem when the oilers faced them last year in the second round. and as much as i have followed hockey, i have never heard of an instance where the american anthem has been booed. canadian fans have more class then american fans, period.

Actually there was a ***-for-tat of booing national anthems between the Habs, & Isles a few years ago if I remember correctly...And a few years ago I recall @ the World Juniors the audience @ Ottawa had booed the USA team, & national anthem.

Yeah it's disrespectful, but I'm not gonna let several thousand goofs on both sides of the border change my attitude towards the game I love, & the good folks in Canada

i watch every world juniors and i highly doubt they booed the us national anthem...plus, they were probly too busy booing jack johnson  but i can see the habs fans boing the us national anthem, stand corrected...they dont count as a part of canada :P f***in french ******* LOL

:lol::lol:

Then you need to stop chugging the Kanada Kool-Aid. A quick Google search turns up instances in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. It's so easy to find that I'm pretty convinced you purposely blocked it out of your mind. It happens on both sides, so you can get off your snooty high horse.

P.S. - Were Canadian fans being classier than American fans when a Buffalo Sabres fan was assaulted in Ottawa?

Oh, yes. Very classy of you. Way to demonstrate all that Canadian class you've got. Racism is the classiest thing I can think of.

lol, well i guess there are a few idiots from every country then EH, lol...in any event...seriously f*** the french, trying to separate from canada...i have no respect for them. and thats not racism, saying something like "french frogs"..would be racism...calling someone a ****** is not.

All I can say is that I've been to Canada several times (Windsor/Toronto/Montreal) and not once have I ever had a problem...Folks up there are wonderful, easygoing, and polite. I plan on going to another Red Wings game with my buddy (stay in Windsor - for the "ballet" :yowza: ), & maybe if tickets aren't too expensive on Stubhub I'll try to make another Leafs game

i havn't been to a red wings game in years, nor' a leafs game...i honestly don't think forking out that kind of money is worth it when i can just sit on my couch and enjoy myself just as much...unless it was the playoffs or something. detroit better play toronto next year, but im not sure they are.

ye lol TV is good times tho...tickets are over-priced, food is over-priced, beer is over-priced..its a joke!

totally off topic, but watch this LOL http://youtube.com/watch?v=OwkjeefUEes

Other than being totally wrong about the fact that Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver are easy examples to find--that's four of six NHL cities--you also fail to notice one simple thing:

I never said Americans hadn't done it. Simply that Canadians had, and that fact totally disproved the sweeping generalization of "Canada=100% classy and good and not making noise during the anthem" that IceMunkee was making. HUGE difference between saying 'that's not true' and 'Americans have never done this classless thing many Canadians did.' I said the former, you assumed the latter.

Well... This seem to go a bit astray. What I was trying to say is not wether they gave a crap about ours is that they cared so much for thiers! You go to a game here and you can barely get the beer guy from stopping to sell.

I do remember at a Calgary game when Nixon died they asked for a moment of silence and the fans boo'd. I just assumed they thought the announcer said Bush.

Well regardless who's booed what before. The sens fans at game 3 were abt as class as I can remember seeing. I was at the game, and while we didnt sing the american anthem the way we sung the canadian one, at that game you could clearly hear the canadian crowd singing along to the american anthem as well and then a cheer afterwards. Then came the canadian anthem, and you couldn't even hear Lindon Slewidge singing it. One of the coolest things I've ever been present to hear/see.

Thats not true. I remeber when SanJose fans were booin the canadian anthem, and the next time it went to Edmonton instead of us booin the american anthem they all sang it. I live in Canada and i have never ever heard them boo the american anthem

No, actually it is true. It's happened on both sides of the border.

I don't really think national anthems have a place in sports, anyway. It's a silly tradition and should stop. I mean, look at Detroit. They're singing the Star-Spangled Banner of all things when, what, two guys on the team are American and over half of the team isn't even from the North American continent.

I do like, however, the old Mighty Ducks anthem ceremonies.

That is why there are a very good number of Wings fans throughout Canada

Well I think that will be the worst idea ever. Take away one of the few American pride things we have left. Regardless of who is on the team it is not for them. It is for the Americans and Canadians in the stands that watch, pay, and contribute. I think it is less for the players being paid.

It shows honor. Truly it is the only place where you can hear it anymore.

Of course at the mentioned game, all the people I saw on TV actually applauded (some even rose out of their seats) after the US anthem. Rest assured these people wore Ottawa jerseys.

I have never seen another country's anthmem being performed on national TV in the US where the crowd applauded at the end.

i think it's just a matter of differences in culture. Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't most canadians raised to sing along with their anthem? and most of us americans are raised to stand silently during our anthem.

So to say that canadians have more pride because they sing along with thier anthem is somewhat off base.

Having seen NHL games in Detroit, Chicago and Washington, I've never once heard the Canadian anthem booed. Then again, I'm also pretty sure they don't play it in Chicago and Washington.

National pride has a place at the Olympics or the World Championships, but not at professional sporting events. Nobody's nation is being represented. Sure, you could say cities (and in some cases, even states) are being represented, but when it comes down to it, the only thing to have pride in at an NHL game is the team you cheer for.

And, as a side note, I'd have to argue that there are plenty (too many) of "American pride things" left. I can't turn around without seeing some show of patriotism.

They play it in Chicago and Washington whenever there is a Canadian team in town. Basically, if a team is in Canada and its opponent is also from Canada, only O Canada is performed. If an American team is playing a fellow American team, only the Star-Spangled Banner is played. In a "mixed" game, both anthems are sung.

I disagree with that it only represents a city or state. The National Anthem has been a part of sports history for a very long time. Watch the tigers game on the 14th of June. It is the Army's birthday and they are having a special event for soldiers of the area.

I do agree there are signs of patriotism but it is slightly out weighed by negativity lately.

I know the national anthem has been played at sporting events for a long time, but it's hard to find any instances of a team representing an entire nation (maybe the Raptors or the Jays, but that's a stretch). Whatever the Tigers are doing on the 14th, they're playing the Brewers, and Detroit's just as much of an American city as Milwaukee is.
