Sergei Fedorov career revival - play D

Can't stop thinking about poor Sergei, one of the most amazing Wings of the past 20 years if not all time in the top 10 Wings ever. Here he is, his career waning, but why not revisit the Bowman experiment and have him play D? Ego and his dad aside (it probably would never happen), I think he would be great at D. I have read many places that had he played D he might have been one of the best. When he was younger he played many positions. To top it off, though I would miss Schneiders shot from the line, could you match that against Sergei Fedorov's slapshot? I don't think so. Like I said, I doubt this would ever happen, but I expect the first response to be "It will never happen." I just thought it was something to think about and throw around.

I remember I went to watch a game in 02' (haha, i've told this story like a million times) and we had a PP. Up front were Yzerman, Shanny, and Hull, and on the point were Lids and Fedorov. For 2 straight minutes the puck didn't leave the canucks zone. It was amazing. He is great back there.

Problem is. He is a forward. He wants to score, to lead that charge. He can do it from the point, but its easier up front. Plus, his natural instinct to move forward, wont that cause problems of him gettin caught and opposing teams getting odd man rushes?

Granted Columbus had a joke for defense last year, but once Fedorov switched to D for the Jackets, he was easily the best. He did great work in the corners, in the rare occasion that he didnt get to the puck first and also was hell to cover on the points.

There are other guys Id rather see the Wings get, but if the Wings have key injuries going down the stretch (Kronwall), then Id love to see Sergei back with the Red Wings in a high-end utility role.

Not another Fedorov topic...

We should have some kind of counter here saying "It has been X amount of days since we've last had a Sergei Fedorov thread".

I think it would be quite appropriate, granted it probably wouldn't get past 2 days though.

Agreed. I'm not huge on bringing back old, once were great players, (ahem ... Dmac) no matter how much we/I may have loved them at one point. But if we could bring him back, and sign him at the right price (not sure when his current contract is up) I'd take him.

Sigh. Enough of this. Yes, Schneider's slapshot is stronger than Fedorov's. No, Fedorov will not play defense. He has made it clear that he will not play full-time D.

Ego. He apparently saw it as an affront to his offensive abilities. His dad once called out Bowman for playing Sergei on defense, saying it was an insult.

Sergei has made it clear, even recently, that he will not play as a full-time defenseman. For goodness` sake, enough of the Fedorov threads. If the guy could have a career revival as a D-man, he'd have had one this year when Hitchcock forced him to play defenseman for the last half of the year. It didn't happen.

We already have one forward in Samuelsson that has exhibited greatness in playing the point on the powerplay. I think that we should make him our number 1 D-man, and trade Lidstrom for Fedorov to make him our number 2 defenseman. Just Kidding. Seriously, though, how come people on this forum have all of a sudden gotten the idea that Fedorov would be willing to be a defenseman.

Now I am just grasping at straws here... but most likely it was becuase he was better and could do more for the team as a forward. It doesn't hurt that he is stellar on Defense, but he is spectacular with the puck on forward.

He is a natural forward with great defensive minded abilities.

Forwards appear on the the points all the time... Sammy while being a forward back there is the straw that broke the camels back. Normally a forward on the point during the PP supplies a little bit of skills back there and help move the puck around and get some plays set up.

I am not knowing if feds would be willing to play full-time D (its not ego, its not his natural position) Dandenault was a rare example where a forward turned D-man for longer than a few games.

I am think that Sergei would become one of our better forwards and if needed could fill in very nicely as a borrow-type defenseman... which would add a solid player back there in case we have another Kroner-Schnider type fiasco again in the playoffs.

Not true. Sergei's is easily harder.

Fedorov's dad complaining is not the same as Fedorov complaining. Sergei never once bitched about his role to the media. As far as a 'career revival'? Fedorov is still a damn fine forward!! The Wings only have two forwards I would even consider better than Sergei, and most teams are weaker up front than Detroit.

Same here. Didn't he win some hardest shot competitions at the All-Star games? I think his shot was clocked over 100mph.

Correct!

Fedorov a shot harder

Fedorov's winning shot was clocked at 101.5 mph

Sergei Fedorov, a two-time fastest skater, was the only player to reach triple-figures in the hardest shot contest.

http://www.nhl.com/intheslot/read/features...shot102903.html

Sergei Fedorov, then with the Detroit Red Wings, won the NHL's hardest-shot competition in 2002.

Current and former NHL goalies have the best line on the hardest shooters.

Ask Dominic Hasek who has the hardest shot and he'll say it's a former teammate.

"Sergei Fedorov," Hasek told Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News. "It's a heavy, hard shot.

Hasek's selection of Fedorov surprised Vernon, but he agreed his former teammate does have a hard shot.

We should have some kind of counter here saying "It has been X amount of days since someone said "We should have some kind of counter here saying "It has been X amount of days since we've last had a Sergei Fedorov thread".

When has anyone else actually said it?

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset yet another die hard Fedorov fan who is delusional to the truth that Fedorov threads are like store coupons around here.

You know, it's annoying seeing countless "Bring back Feds!!!!!!!!!111" topics day in and day out. But hey, that's just me. I'm sure other people feel the same way when the word "grit" is mentioned.

Yes, and you are preferentially pushing for us to acquire him purely because he is a former Red Wing. There will be better options on the market come trade-deadline time.

Man, nothing sadder than someone who takes the time to bash a thread. Nothing screams, "I need a to be busier at work/school/home" than that (or, "Man, I haven't been laid in some time..." ). Put that energy somewhere else boys, looks like you could use it.

I didn't say to bring back Feds, the subject is as he gets older why not play D. That could be in Detroit as well as anywhere else. He played D in Russia as a youngster and for Bowman and he was awesome. Of course he is an awesome forward though as time goes on, switching to D might be an amazing thing. IMagine if his career took this turn and he became a premiere D-man. Nobody has ever done that (have they?) and Feds actually could. I think all of this points to what a simply great hockey player he is.

He is an option that the wings org is looking into getting. Because they can see past the hatred filled "scorned lover" syndroms of the past from some on here and still make decisions which will help the organization in some key areas.

I am pushing for Sergei because I like him yes... But just because he is a former wing... Hardly...

He did so much more for this team than almost ANY body on our current roster ;) Thats right... he did MORE for this team than almost everyone on our current roster.

No, nothing else is sadder than somebody who will stoop to utter condescension in order to waste time on those he feels are bashing the thread. Leaning down to insult the insulters, eh? It appears you really need to be busier at work/school/home.

Pretty d@mned comically ironic post. Thanks for the laugh.

Once again you contribute..... nothing! Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I was getting laid last night and now I have to run to a busy day at work. Enjoy your day wasting keystrokes and most certainly wasting other kinds of strokes too.

OK, I loved Fedorov when he was here. BUT...

DOESN'T ANYBODY REMEMBER THAT WHEN HE LEFT HE BASICALLY TOLD THE WINGS HE'D RATHER PLAY IN PAKISTAN SURROUNDED BY RABID SKUNKS THAN PLAY IN DETROIT!!!??? Too late he found out hockey players in Los Angeles were not granted the near-divine status they get around here. By then, skills starting to slip, options starting to fade.

Again, I loved him playing here, but he isn't coming back and I can't imagine him being overly welcomed by the folks at the top.
