I can't believe the Wings only play 3 times on CBC next year. The Leafs play 13 weeks in a row to start the season...We have a Canadian following, only a river seperates us. Come on only 3 games???

Jan 13----Wings vs Senaters

Feb 9----Wings vs Leafs---Can't wait for this one. Oh how I miss that home and home brawls...

Feb 23----Wings vs Canucks

Isn't that around the same as last year? CBC will only show the Wings when they are playing a Canadian team on a Saturday. The more worrisome thing is TSN only showing the Wings 4 times all season.

Why is this such a surprise that the Leafs have so many games? It's always been that way since HNIC existed. The station is based out of Toronto, and the two head broadcasters (Bob Cole and Harry Neale) are also the Leafs full-time broadcasters (well, I know Neale is for sure, but I can't be too sure about Cole).

Plus, I would think the Leafs generally get good TV ratings. Not because their good (which their not) but because the tickets are so damn expensive that a middle class hockey family cannot afford to go, so they compromise the situation by watching it on TV.

It really doesn't hurt my feelings that the Wings aren't on CBC all the time, because I don't live in Canada. I have FSN and Center Ice, so it's not even an issue for me.

CBC in Canada is to the Leafs, and other CDN teams what FSN Detroit is to the Wings. I may be mistaken, but does FSN DETROIT play any hockey games (outside p/o's) that do not include the wings? It's the same thing. Hence it's called Hockey night in Canada (indicating that one of the teams are from Canada (almost always the first game is the leafs, in the Toronto area, and the second is from out west). Also, Canadian TV has an issue called Canadian content. A certain percentage of all Canadian broadcasting must include Canadian content (around 40-50% I believe). HNIC allows the CBC to make up a great portion of this content. The CBC will play the wings only when they play a CDN team. Also, Hockey Night In Canada is only on Saturday (sometimes a Sunday afternoon). When you only play 2 games a week, they can't show many wings games. Trust me, I'd love them to, so I don't have to pay for centre Ice. I think TSN will have more, though. ;)

One of the biggest reasons why the Wings are not on HNIC more is the schedule since they do not play agains the Canadian teams very often.

The CBC is a crown corporation, therefore, they are going to have almost all Canadian content, but even if it was a private corporation, they would still likely show almost exclusively Canadian teams, since that is what would sell. While some viewers in the US receive CBC programming, almost all of the CBC audience is Canadian and the majority would prefer watching a Canadian team play.

With respect to Toronto and having to watch them 13 weeks in a row or whatever the number is, it actually depends on your geographic region. If you are in central Canada and most of Ontario, yes, it will always be Toronto games, but if you are in Eastern Ontario you'll get Ottawa games, if you are in Quebec and Eastern Canada, you'll get Montreal games. I grew up in Nova Scotia and it was very rare that I would see a Toronto game on HNIC. If you are in Western Canada you get Western teams, but for the most part, the games are at different times so you normally get Toronto and the local team.

I think that we've had about all we can handle from those canadian announcers during the last two playoff years against Edmonton and Calgary. Those CBC homers are always biased against the Wings.

While being a Canadian, but also a Wings fan, I have to say that I can't stand the announcers from Calgary and Edmonton either. That being said, I think the announcers from Toronto are usually not bad (and I hate Toronto). I think it just depends on what CBC you get.

CBC is Toronto's flagship network, isn't it?

Of course they're going to show the Leafs every week. :P

Very true. Especially when the two teams would play back in the day. When Yzerman was one of the best players in the league (and certainly the best Wings player), Cole and Neale would constantly go out of their way to praise Yzerman or other players like Gallant, Probie or Snepts.

But the series against the Flames this past year was comical. You would have thought Calgary was destroying Detroit for 58 minutes out of each game. It was only the few seconds that Detroit actually put the puck in the net that gave the Wings the win.

The announcers from Alberta make me want to puke :puke: They are the homers in the truest sense of the meaning. They suck. ugggh.

Of course Neale is going to praise those guys...he coached the Wings in the mid 80s.

Wait, didn't Calgary sweep the Wings?

Well that sucks..but what can you do. I just cant beleive there is no Wings/Oilers game on a saturday this year...theres ALWAYS one.

I love CBC for its playoff hockey coverage, and HNIC in Canada is a great tradition, but they are so Pro Leafs its nausiating. Its like they think ever Hockey fan in Canada LOVES the leafs...when the truth is, everyone despises them outside of the GTA.

Well, the Wings aren't exactly the most exciting team to watch anymore. The Leafs suck, but their crowd is so loud that their games are actually fun :)

Leafs crowds are anything but loud. Unless you consider the dull roar of a sparce "Go Leafs Go" chant from the 5 passionate fans that can actually afford the tickets.

Most people who go to Leafs games are businessmen that don't give a two s***s about hockey, or if they do, they sure don't show it. Their crowds are generally quiet.

Lower bowl (which is generally what you hear on TV) is pretty quiet, but the upper bowl is a lot of fun.

Is it really? Heh.

It just seems like everytime I watch a Leafs games on TV, I see a bunch of businessmen wearing suits that look like their about ready to fall asleep in their seats. The upper bowl isn't shown, so I don't know how that is, but you would know better then I would, so I'll take your word for it. ;)
