KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Det News Here's the link guys its official and i also saw it on tsn this morning ... The Wings put forward Aaron Downey on waivers Friday, but general manager Ken Holland said the Wings will keep Downey on the roster if he isn't claimed by another team by Saturday afternoon. He'll likely be sent to Grand Rapids later in the month when forward Igor Grigorenko is brought up.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 I do not like this news. Hopefully he doesn't get claimed, then he'll be sent to GR and sometime during the season be brought up.

johnnyoski 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 From a selfish point of view I hope he doesn't get claimed so we can keep him, but at the same time even though he likes it here I'm sure he'd rather be playing more often if it meant going to another team. wingsfan40 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Totally saw this coming....I can't wait for grigs to adjust to detroits pace Plus clearly Drake doesnt mind dropping the gloves so why do we need Downey?
Mors 201 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 I guess I should have seen this coming...what was I thinking, that the Red Wings might actually go a season without getting punked every game by "foolish" teams that actually keep someone on the roster than can stand up for his teammates...my mistake. Sure glad we got f***in samuelsson out there scuffing the backboards every night though.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 I seriously doubt he'll be claimed, but this is f'n bulls***. It seems the plan all along was just to have him at GR. So they had him make the team just so he'd sign. If i was Downey, I'd beg for someone to claim me to get the hell out of here. Keep things in perspective please, Drake fought COREY PERRY.

There's a reason his average number of games is hovering around 30gm/yr. He's simply not good enough. As an enforcer or otherwise.

Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 The over riding factor in all this is Grigs. Once he gets up to pace he was coming back to Detroit. His skill level's are just too good not to be involved with the team and lets be honest, Ellis or Downey were only going to keep a roster space whilst Grigs gets his game legs in order. Downey knew the score when he got offered a 2 way deal so its no shock to him I would guess. So my only concern is how Babs is going to use the roster once this all settles down. I would say that who trains the hardest will get the more starts. Will be very interesting come Nov time.
Guest micah Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Plus clearly Drake doesnt mind dropping the gloves so why do we need Downey? Hahahahahah <breath> Hahahahahahaha. Yeah, Dalas F'n Drake is our tough guy..hahahahahaha. Too bad for Downey, you would think an organisation like the wings would have more class than to put a guy on the roster for 1 day so he'll sign then send him down. I hope this wasn't premeditated, but I have a feeling it was. Sad.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 I don't think any of us actually understands waivers, it's not like he's going to be playing in Grand Rapids, he'll be on the Red Wings as long as no one claims him which they won't. Downey knew the situation before he signed, so don't throw the "class" card around, he knew this would happen and he accepted it since he signed his name. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 He's not going to stay though. This all but assures he will be sent down for Grigorenko in another week or two and not Matt Ellis. If its like other sports, im guessing Downey is a guy that has to clear waivers before they are able to send him down. So this is being done now to get the wheels in motion for his demotion? So whether he's claimed or not, he wont be up here. Its just a matter of whether or not he'll get a game or two in before he leaves.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Classic Holland, Keeping Ellis instead, and Grigerenko who hasent done a damn thing. Ugh, same stupid s*** every year. Cant have one enforcer that doesnt even take up a roster spot. Gotta have Grigs (who wont have a spot) or Ellis (who will never play) instead.
redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 Man am I pissed, why are we the only team that insists on not having an enforcer.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 The Ellis factor is what has me pissed off, its not so much Grigorenko. Its just like having Langfeld last season...friggin pointless.

Exactly. Langfeld took a job that Booter wouldve served MUCH better. And now Ellis is doing the same.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 What, exactly, is Downey going to "enforce" from the press box? ...or the instigator rule for that matter? The Wings wouldnt be the first team to spot play enforcers when they think theyre needed against certain opponents. You dont have to play 82 games to have a purpose on the team. I could say the same thing...is Grigorenko going to score from the press box?
Rice 42 Report post Posted October 6, 2007 I could say the same thing...is Grigorenko going to score from the press box? No, but that's part of the learning process. Grigorenko has a shot at becoming a top-six threat that the Wings need. Aaron Downey is what he is.
