Where in the World is Carm...I mean Darren McCarty

Parting shot

The Calgary Flames are in town Wednesday, but ex-Wing Darren McCarty won't be with them. He's out of the NHL, and, surprisingly, none of his former teammates in Detroit have heard from him in months.

But there's a concert Saturday night at the Magic Bag in Ferndale with proceeds benefiting the McCarty Cancer Foundation. Good bands, good cause. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

*This is what I am wondering, did he fall back into his old addictions? his buy out from the wings, his divorce, hurt almost all of last year and no NHL deal this year or even a try out with a team. I don't think it's too crazy to think he might have fallen back to his old ways.

SO HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING?????

i certainly hope he hasnt returned back to his old ways...im sure the reason he didnt try out for another team is because he doesnt think he can play a full season because of his injury problems...so im hoping that he is just training and resting so he can give another go at it next year, that is odd though that none of the wings have heard from him i hope he is ok

He's probably working out by himself here in Calgary, im sure he still has the desire to play. A team will probably give him a shot during the season, I really hope he does the Joe Kocur thing and returns to the Wings just in time for the playoffs and provides tons of grit and leadership. Too abd it wont happen, but good luck to D-mac.

Wow, this is sad to hear, no doubt. I was wondering to myself what was going on with him, as I hadn't heard of anyone signing him.

I'm sure nobody will ever forget his cup-clinching goal in 1997 on Ron Hextall. One of the most amazing, most famous goals in Cup Finals history. Sad...

I would love if the Wings signed him near the trade deadline, I think if he was healthy he COULD make a difference in the playoffs.

jgagnon,

I just don't think mentally he is healthy enough to do it. Although he was a grinder and a banger he played the game at a very high mental level.

However I think he is physically worn out and mentally exhausted. But if he was healthy and proved to the wings staff that he was 100% back to what he was his first year in Cal, then yeah I wouldn't hate seeing him in the wheel again.

I hate to be the party pooper but every party needs one so....

I'd be surprised if he ever suited up for an NHL team again.

We do have to face facts, he is 35 years old and the type of player who now pretty much offers very little. His best years of production were in Detroit. His 1st year in Calgary was pretty good but that was 2 years ago and he was alot healthier both physically and mentally. He played 32 games last year without a single point, the first season of his career without a point. As the years have gone by, he's been surpassed by far too many players of his kind to in my mind find a shot with another team.

I think we've seen the last of Darren in the NHL. I loved him as a Red Wing and some of my fondest memories are tied directly to things he did for this organization. I hope he stays clean and that he focuses on his children and being a good person and good father. I would say IMO that the writing is on the wall on this one. I think his window has passed and he knows it, hence why we haven't seen nor heard from him.

Great Post. You pretty much summed up what I'd say on this topic. It's tempting, but I don't want to see a grind line reunion in Detroit.

I would sign him. I honestly would.

I mean, it's not like he is demanding much money at all. I say give him a shot. What's the worst that could happen? Maybe he gets here and has a career rejuvenation. And, if not, no big deal. I don't know, maybe I'm just a sucker for a great comeback story, and this would certainly be one, but I think it might be interesting.

I don't think just anybody can do the training regimen that Chelios can. I mean, he is in an elite class.

Yeah, they're called extra terrestrials.

yea, he still wants to play but i dont think he will get the oppurtunity even though i wish he would...i just hope he comes back to MI and gets a job in the front office of the wings

Please no!...Have his past 'business decisions' not alarmed you enough?

Mac is a great teammate to have and is probably fun to have a beer with but I wouldn't want him in my front office.

No worries. He's in studio. Wanted a natural feel, so he's recording it in a shack in the middle of nowhere in the Canadian Rockies.

I feel bad for Darren that his career appears to have ended in the way it has, but I am more concerned that none of his former Wings teammates have heard from him in months. That is not like him, especially with Ozzie and Drapes. Those three have known each other forever - they all came into the league around the same time and were nearly inseparable as Red Wings.

Hopefully Mac is just laying low and plotting his next move - and staying sober.

The worst that can happen is that we wouldn't remember him as the player who scored that incredible goal against Philly, who lifted everyone's spirits on the Red Wings and in the city of Detroit by kicking Claude Lemieux's ass and whom we all got to know as a true warrior, but as someone who tried to be a player who he wasn't and should have stopped when it was time to stop.

That time is now.

Darren will always be one of us.

Let's just keep it that way.

Eloquent, as always, IM. I totally agree with you - much as I loved Mac as a Wing, I don't know what he could contribute to the team now. But I love the memories and thank him profusely for them. Hope you're OK, Mac. We still love ya.

McCarty remains in Calgary

Posted by George James Malik October 11, 2007 13:39PM

From a "napkin note" in the Calgary Herald:

October 11, Calgary Herald: Several Wings have expressed concern to Detroit media that former teammate Darren McCarty has been incommunicado in recent months. The former Flames and Wings winger might be laying low, but he hasn't completely vanished. In fact, he attended Calgary's practice at the Max Bell rink on Monday before the team jetted to Detroit
