The Best Player in the League:

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

For this season only, who has been the best player so far? Rules:

Goalies don't count, because obviously they would dominate the top 5 best, let alone the best.

If you say Zetterberg or Lidstrom, name another non-Wing for the sake of variety.

Please don't say Sidney Crosby- I have watched a couple of his games so far and he was good but not great.

If you say A Flame, Shark, Duck, or Predator, I will slap you.

Keep in mind, the BEST player can play well at both sides of the ice.

I'm not going to say anyone from the Wings because the wings always will be good to me.

Mats Sundin as a team the leafs suck but he is having a great year so far.

Martin Biron this guy has always been good but he is playing out of his mind right now.

I really can't see much of an argument against Zetterberg. He is still averaging almost 2 goals a game, a solid defensive mindset, can read plays as good as the best of them, and can set up his line mates with very good scoring chances.

Of course we're only 9 or so games in, so its really unfair to the rest of the league to be judging who the best player is

Dude who in the hell do you think you are to tell us that we can't vote for Sidney Crosby? Oh, wow you watched two games of him so you must be some expert right? Well I think you are a moron, he is clearly the best and you clearly have no idea about hockey or life.

For those saying Sidney Crosby and getting upset for being told not to, in defense of the thread starter, he did mention "this year" - so last's year's Hart, Pearson, Art Ross really bears no weighting.

That said, in terms of this year, not sure what Pens games the person has watched, but in the games I saw (I saw most of some games, but not all), he has looked amazing, the pts just haven't been piling up (though, it's not like he's in an incredible slump or anything).

Even if I saw every game by every player this year, not sure I'd be comfortable answering this question only 7 games in. And since I have only seen Pens, Wings and Leaf games so far (I've some of others, but very little), I really don't feel comfortable answering.

For example, Stastny has had some great statiscal games, but I haven't seen any of them, so I do not know how he has actually played.

You'd have to take Sid over anyone even though we all love the Wings

Chelios! It's more than just stats, read some of sirdrake's threads to see all the intangibles he brings to the game.

Definitely go Rockies, I was at game 163 against Peavy.

Stastny knows how to light the lamp, no question, but I don't think that's enough to warrant calling him the best player in the league right now. He's a newcomer and it shows in his all-around game. That, of course, is to be expected from any offensively-gifted young guy, and in three or four seasons, after he has refined his play away from the other team's net, he should be a real force to be reckoned with.

But at the moment, Hank is the real deal, a bona fide elite NHLer. The big difference between him and Stastny is that he's not only scoring like a madman, but also doing all the other "little" things right (e.g. backchecking, setting up plays, working as hard in his own zone as he does in the offensive zone). That kind of stuff doesn't get you as much press and hype and fanfare as a hat trick does, but as Stevie Y demonstrated, it elevates you from being a great offenseman to a great player, period.

Barring injury (knock on wood), he should vie for the scoring title and the Selke this season. Can't say that about many players.

While Ztterberg has been the best player in the league so far, I like your nameing another player angle, in which case I say Mats Sundin so far. Great offensive numbers on a relatively sub par team to go with his +7.

So you want an honest answer about who we think is best, except we can't pick players from 4 teams, we can't pick one of the absolute best players in the league, we can't pick goalies, and if we pick someone on our team, we also have to pick someone else??

Under those conditions I respectfully abstain. :P

Jarome Iginla has just been tearing it up this year. While Zetterberg has been good, half of his points have been from the power play, and he still hasn't netted a game-winner.

then again if i don't say it's chris chelios, he might find me.
