Head over to Yahoo! NHL or CLICK HERE! to vote for Detroit as 'The Best Hockey Town' in America. Its the poll directly on the front page.

As of right now, after I voted Detroits easily sweeping this poll with 47%.

The other teams on the list are:

"Saint Paul" (why wouldnt they put Minnesota?) with 20%

Buffalo with 19% and

Philidelphia with 15%

stupid little poll? yes, but the bigger the percentage, the prouder it makes ME to be a Wings fan!!!

p.s. Am I a total moron or does this equl out to 101%??? I know it really does but how does that make ANY sense?

I voted. St. Paul is listed because Minnesota is a state, not a town. You could call it Hockeystate, but not Hockeytown.

The percentages not adding up thing happens when they round numbers.

The puck podcast guys seem to insult "hockeytown" every episode, i should send them a link to this poll.

you DEFINITELY should! To me, this poll just proves that the Wings might not sell out games, but our fans are still alive and well. The economy (while i dont think its the WHOLE reason) is, of course, not helping ticket sales either. But Im sure theres many people like me who work and just make enough to get by and cant make it to every game.

BUT YOU BETTER BELIEVE that I will not miss one single game this season on television! Even if im at work (I work at Outback) I'll put the game on one of our big screens and watch most of it while I can.

You took the words right out of my mouth! If I could, I'd go to every game. Heck, I'd fly/drive to the away games, but I can't. I have to schedule my week around games. I didn't go to my Homecoming because we were playing the BlackHawks that night(I wasn't planning on going to HC anyway, but still!). Detroit's HockeyTown no matter what. Stevie made it that way. And what he says goes!!! :sly:

What about Anaheim?

well, i guess the poll creator's didn't even bother to figure in Anaheim since they are, by default the north american "hockeytown" hands down.

i mean just look at their stanley cup gathering, 14k.

cant do much better than that!

Minnesota already calls itself State of Hockey.

Three, technically four, U.S. cities mad for hockey IMO are Detroit, Buffalo, and Minneapolis - St. Paul. Philadelphia was just a throw-in to round out the choices. Minnesota is crazy about hockey from everything I've read. High school hockey there is like high school basketball in Indiana or high school football in Texas.

yea youre right about that. their pro-team might not be anything special, but as a whole state, minnesota is a HUUUUGE state for hockey. they're high-school hockey is comparable to AAA hockey in any other state. (actually now that I think about it, im pretty sure they only have high school hockey, that dont have midget majors/minors). I remember when I was playing high school hockey Minnesota was the number 1 state for drafting in high school, followed by Michigan in second.

So yea, they do have a right to be on the poll.. Philly? im not sure about.

as for the goof who said Anaheim??? ummm, not even close. IF anaheim were on the poll, they'd probably be at about 2% right now!

hmmmmf...last I recall, and that was last year, Michigan had the most registered amateur hockey players in the nation. Minnesota State of Hockey???? Yeah right!

Michigan state also won the NCAA hockey championship, furthermore the university of Michigan has more titles then any other college program.

But then again as I've always said, you have have to be good at something. Can you name any meaningful accomplishment a sports team from Minnesota has done within the past 10 years? Neither can I, so let them pretend they're the state of hockey if it gives them something to boast about.

I voted. We're still winning in a landside with 47%.

I've said it in another discussion, and I'll say it here. Detroit is Hockeytown USA, because from 1995-2006 Hockey was the biggest and most popular sport in the city. Minnesota and Buffalo are great hockeytowns, BUT the Wild have never been more popular than the Vikings or Twins, and the Sabres have never been more popular than the Bills in their hometowns.

Also, I find it a little funny that McKeon called St. Paul MN the new Hockeytown USA considering this is the 2nd time around for the Twin Cities in the NHL.

Whatever. It's common knowledge Anaheim fans are among the classiest and most knowledgable hockey fans in the U.S. Recent surveys have shown that now over 45% of Duck fans know what icing is. Furthermore, Duck fans are probably the loudest and most excited fans in the league. Where else but the Pond would you hear hundreds of people scream and celebrate when the see the puck hit the side of the net.

I find it funny, the guy who wrote the article is a joke. He made this, move over Detroit! Minnys a'comin article. Then left it to a poll, and Detroit destroyed the poll. St Paul is not hockey town, Maybe Buffalo, not St Paul.

I've never heard of this s***bag before.

Now, onto the whole "Hockeytown" thing. Can somebody tell me where it comes from? Did someone in the organization just think it sounded good and we just rolled with it?

How does one declare there to be 1 hockeytown? Personally, if Detroit weren't called hockeytown I wouldn't really care. If another city was called hockeytown, i'd be asking the same question of "what the hell makes you anymore hockeytown than Detroit or someplace else where the game is uber popular?

IMO, I think its a cool, but sort of baseless term we coined up that sounds great but that's all it is. I don't read too much into "hockeytown". We just coined the term first, right? That's all we did. I think people make too big a deal of things like this. Its just a nickname. You know, like Magic Man and El Diablo.

The general media is just trying to de-throne the Wings in any way they can, they finally realized that Detroit isn't going to suck anytime soon, so they had to set their sites a little lower, on their slogan. Too bad they cant attack "Fire On Ice"

Why do people take such offense to s*** like this? Are people really so egocentric that they think everything has to be about them and their team. So what if Minnesota calls itself the State of Hockey? So what if they have more or less registered players. Oooh, aahhhh. Who gives a f***?

What if Florida called itself the State of Football? Does that make it so? Does that make it gospel? Its just a nickname for crying out loud.

Seriously, are people so desperately low on self esteem that this is the kind of s*** that gets them going? Do you really, truly give a damn that Minnesota calls itself the State of hockey? Does it make Michigan less of a hockey state? If being dubbed the state of hockey or hockeytown is oh so important, people need to check their priorities or get freaking lives.

You're getting your panties in a bind over ******* nicknames.

I agree with most all of your points, but aren't you getting your proverbial panties in a bunch over people getting their panties in a bunch over this nickname thing?

Whoa! :whoa:

Advice: arguments hold more weight when you refrain from swearing and attacking people. Good points though. I'm sure many would agree.

Now you settle down right now boy!

Perhaps the most psycho and bipolar fans I've been around yet.

About damn time somebody picked up on this.

Philly has the worst sports fans in the country, which could explain why they haven't won a championship in the last 20 or so years. Those people are insane. It's been said not to bring your wife and kids to a Flyers game, because they might end up raped and killed by some crazy drunk fan.

I don't know what's in the water in that city, but something is wrong with those people. Whether it was growing up in the days of the "Broad Street Bullies" or what, those people are ridiculous.

The thing that impresses me about Michigan is the voting turnout on ESPN hockey polls.

Per Wikipedia, Michigan has more than double the population than Minnesota, but the turnout is usually greater than that. Maybe more Michigan hockey fans know about the site or more have Internet. IDK, but Michigan's turnout rivals even the most populous states. As it stands right now in the current poll only New York and international voters have voted more than Michigan voters - 92, 128, and 74 resepectively. Minnesota has 26.
