Simple Osgood Question

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I have been talking with some avid wings fans, and the majority has agreed that Chris Osgood is playing the best hockey of his career, looking more well rounded than he ever has.

Agree/Disagree?

Do you see Osgood having a career year if Hasek spends a lot of time on the shelf this year?

95-96 was Osgood's best season. He had nights where he was the best goalie in the league.

39-6-5 record

2.17 gaa

.911 svp

5 shutouts

He was also great for the first two rounds in the playoffs. His save in game 7 against St. Louis was one of the greatest saves I've ever seen a goalie make. The wheels fell off against Colorado in the conference finals but up until that series his season was golden.

Hey has been stellar so far, that's for sure. Icer is definitely right though, 95-96 Osgood was downright amazing more often than not. The only thing that worries me, is if Osgood stays hot and ends up being number 1 ( and I know, I know, that's a stretch ), but if that does happen, does hasek revert back to prima donna mode and go sulk in a corner? Possibly becoming a locker room cancer??

Osgood is streaky. He'll go stretches where he's unbeatable but he has just as many stretches where he turns into Chris "Score Me Four" Osgood.

Ozzie was the best in the league in 95-96. He should have won the Vezina that year.

Yep. He was completely robbed.

I agree that 95-96 was probably his best. Along with 97-98. He was GREAT his first year with the Isles, too. Playing out of his mind. If he keeps continuing to play the rest of the season like he is now then for sure it'll be one of his/possibly his best year.

GO OZZIE!!!!!

...Chris Osgood has been the best Wings goalie they've ever had in the modern era. No other goalie has more wins or Stanley Cups as a Wings goalie in the modern era. Lest we be reminded that there are only 15 goalies in the history of the NHL who have more wins. We forget how good Osgood has been throughout his career. There are only 3 goalies who have done better in the same timespan, Roy, Hasek & Broduer. Haske is all was all world at the time, he had a reputation, Roy was boisterous and vocal, Broduer was a phenom. Osgood quietly stacked up the wins, one after another, he doesn't slam his stick to the ice when he gives up a goal (good or bad) I would venture to say he is the Steve Yzerman of goalies, quietly lining up behind high profile players, but hanging with them. Roy has what, 3 Cups? As does Broduer, Hasek has 1. Ozzie has 2. If he finishes with 400 or more wins and remains a Red Wing for the rest of his career, #30 WILL hang in the rafters, especially if another Cup or two come back to Detroit before he retires...

...I can remember Steve Yzerman getting robbed a few times also, for MVP...

To be fair, Roy, Hasek, and Marty have won every Cup as a starter, Ozzie only has done that once.

#30 will be hanging over JLA or New Red Wings Rink. If they win another cup before he retires, you can Write it down in concrete.

I believe OZ is Second in Wins in a Red Wings Career. Behind #1.

Yes and no. I think he's playing great but I've always found his game to be pretty consistent. He's got a bad rep for stupid irrational reasons. He's never been the greatest goalie ever but he's been a very, very consistent goalie who brings far more to the table than what meets the eye. Great locker room guy, consistent, stable play, great at moving the puck which is really important to the game we play as a team. He's so smart with the little things. I think time only will tell if it's a career year though because I expect this kind of play out of him which is why it's always confounded me that the Wings brass have given into so many goofballs through the years that have done more harm than good to the team.

He's such a smart goalie though and really works at honing the craft of goaltending and apparently he's worked really hard at his style and all that jazz and as he said, he thinks he's a better goalie now than he's ever been. His style isn't affected as much by age as it's based so strongly on positional play. He's pretty much always where he needs to be to make the save. Not flashy but he gets the job done. It's all we really need if we can put the puck in the net.

But again, who knows...thus far, he's got potentialy to have a career year but so many factors are at play. I think next year is more likely to be the year of Osgood.

I completely agree with everything you posted. It's pretty much the exact way I think of Oz.

Can you think of a better back up goalie in the league than Ozzy? I don't think so! He's amazing! 8-0-0

Backup goalie ?

Who is a backup goalie ?

:)

Quite.

I don't know how Dom could be justified as the starter right now. Which by default leaves Ozzie :)

After bargaining will come depression and finally acceptance :P
