Downey on Waivers

Kukla's Korner is reporting that Downey was placed on waivers. Can someone please explain how the waiver system works? I thought he had cleared already once this year, and would not have to back on.

If a player clears waivers, they have 10 days to be assigned to the minors or else they'd have to clear waivers again to be assigned.

If a player clears waivers and is assigned to the minors and then later recalled, that player can be sent back to the minors without waivers until the player plays his 10th game since being recalled. Once that point is passed, waivers are required again.

I found this on James Mirtle's blog (http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2007/02/waivers-for-dummies.html):

Here's a quick rundown, in plain English, of how the NHL's waiver system works (for the original post on the nine players placed on waivers this afternoon, see here).

Essentially any player that has three professional seasons since signing his first contract, or who has played 180+ NHL games, must go through waivers before going to the AHL. The waiver system allows all 29 other NHL clubs to pick up that player, with teams lower down in the standings taking precedence over those at the top.

Players are on waivers for two days, and if they go unclaimed, they're off to the minors.

If they go to the minors and then return to the NHL club, players don't have to pass through waivers again unless they've been with the big club for 10+ games or 30+ days.

So, Downey is exposed to being picked up by another team. I wonder why now since he just got put back into the lineup.

Im pretty sure he'll clear, but you never know. I thought they did this before just because of Grigorenko,..so im a little annoyed its happened again.

But doesn't this all do anything to the players dedication and passion to play for that team? I mean if I was in the NHL, I would be pretty darn grateful. But I mean it's like a slap in the face to the player because the team is basically saying.. We have others in front of you and don't mind risking losing you.

what about losing kopecky? Sure I may get flammed for this but this guy hasn't shown much of anything but yet he keeps staying in the mix over other guys who produce. I would rather have downey as well.

Downey is several years older than Kopecky and not as good a player. Yes, he fights...maybe that means YOU would rather have him. But Kopecky actually has skill, size and potential...which means he would be claimed on waivers almost immediately. Downey is a career part-timer who is in his mid-30s and has never shown anything other than a willingness to fight. He won't be claimed. Even if he is...it's not a loss.

No he doesnt, he has to potential yes. And the size too, to bad he never uses it. Why do people like Kopecky so much? I dont want to waive him because he could be used in a deadline deal later in the year, but he'd be no more of a loss then Downey.

I don't want Downey just cause he fights, he is good for the team IMO. I don't think that's all Downey has to offer. If given more time he may prove very worthy is all I'm trying to say.

I agree
