MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 11, 2007 Heated skate blades that are supposed to enhance performance are being used by four anonymous NHL players. The four teams they play for asked that their names be kept secret so the Thermablades on their feet didn't draw media attention and their use become a distraction, says Kris King, the NHL's Toronto-based senior manager of hockey operations. http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=224943&hubname=nhl
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted December 11, 2007 http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=224943&hubname=nhl They sound so high-tech! Sensors on the blades that can be turned on by touch and automatically turn off when they player is idle on the bench? This is crazy!

OsGOD 3 Report post Posted December 11, 2007 (edited) So are these to help increase speed on ice, like the Jersey were too? just look for players with rivers coming beind their blades as they melt the ice Edited December 11, 2007 by OsGOD
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 11, 2007 So are these to help increase speed on ice, like the Jersey were too? just look for players with rivers coming beind their blades as they melt the ice Not really.....they're intended to make skating less tiring, so it helps players increase stamina. It also aids in allowing players get to top speed faster, but it's not proven to make the player actually skate at faster top-end speeds.

b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 this heated skates thing seems a little sci-fi and ridiculus to me. Did I miss something? Has hockey become that much harder to play that we have form-fitting jerseys, composite sticks with holes in them, and now canned-heat blades on their feet? Just play with regular god damn skates, jesus christ.....

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 Totally stupid concept, they're gonna ruin the ice. Why can't the game be about skill and not equipment? The ice freezes immediately after it loses contact with the blades, like it does with normal skates.

sergei_is_still_a_wing 1 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I wonder how much these will cost when they are released to the general public. my best guess would be 700-800 mounted on a decent boot, being that top skates now fetch 550 or something stupid like that, its not out of the question that they will costs that much or more if they catch on. DaWingsin071 4 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 How fricken stupid, the NHL has become a mochary. Watch the movie Slap Shot 2 I know its a terrible movie but that is exactly what the NHL is going to become. A circus on ice. And I agree I love composites sticks but when I walked in to the hockey store last week to look at equipment, they have all this new crap that is terrible. Brand names like Warrior and other fugly sticks and equipment. Bring back Christian, Cooper, the Original Bauer. etc. The real equipment used by real hockey players. Sorry about my rant but this just sounds so damn stupid, next thing there gonna have rocket launchers on the back of skates. Or testing them for that matter. mooose kiiisses 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 If a player stands in one place, like at a face off, wouldn't the blade melt right through the ice?
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 (edited) I'm not some old school guy who can't deal with change, but enough with equipment changes. What with steroids, composite sticks, huge goalie pads, and now heated blades, they are making it too easy. Especially if everyone starts to use these, it will totally negate the purpose, everyone will go back to being even. I agree with what an above poster said: Why can't we just go back to relying on skill? Actually, this could kill hockey as a casual sport. It's already expensive enough for people to get into (which is why it's not as popular as basketball, baseball, and football), can you imagine the cost of buying heated blades? brutus 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I wonder how much these will cost when they're made available to the general public? $399 and they are already available and to you schmoes who think this will ruin hockey...are you still playing with a 1 piece stick or do you use a glue laminated wooden stick or perhaps a composite stick...do you still use skates with a steel truck or are you using skates with a PVC or plastic truck? what the about the improvement over the years of making ice...should we go back to the marginally effective systems of the 50's and 60's to maintain the integrity of the game, allowing a significant layer of slush to develop during the game compared to today? Get over it... move on... keep up with technology or the world will pass you by and only you will be left feeling sorry for yourself brutus I agree with what an above poster said: Why can't we just go back to relying on skill? BWAAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAH do you really think with all of these improvements that the skill level is depreciated...I mean get real LOL!!!! you guys make it sound like all you ahve to do is buy the equipment and not have any talent .....all it does is allow for a further expression of the skill the athlete already possesses brutus
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 (edited) Get over it... move on... keep up with technology or the world will pass you by and only you will be left feeling sorry for yourself i don't know i don't feel sorry one bit letting the NHL's brainchild of the glowing puck technology pass me by... I feel just giddy about it actually! In fact I didn't it wave as it passed me by.... Just cause its labeled under Technology section doesn't mean its always a good thing to keep up with! imisssergei 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 (edited) CHANGE?! OMG NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! CHANGE COULD NEVER IMPROVE THE GAME!! AHHHHH!!!!! Seriously people, get over it. It's nothing huge. From the SITE "Thermablade performance-enhancing skate blades are a patented new skate technology that's revolutionizing the game of hockey. Thermablade skate blades are heated to significantly reduce the friction of the blade gliding on the ice. You get a quicker start and skate faster, and every stride feels like you're skating on fresh ice..... Thermablade also helps you conserve energy. With Thermablade, starting resistance is reduced up to 75% and gliding resistance is cut by up to 55%. There's also a significant decrease in energy-robbing vibration. What it all means is that, on Thermablade skate blades, you have more energy late in the game, when it often counts most. The key components that set a Thermablade apart from an ordinary skate blade are a battery and electronics integrated into the heel of the blade holder. These connect to a resistor which heats the blade to 5°C. A full charge lasts a minimum of 75 minutes of on-ice time, and recharging the batteries takes just 2 hours...... Skating is possible because there's always a microscopic layer of water on the surface of the ice that acts as a lubricant between the ice and the skate blade. With Thermablade technology, the heated skate blade results in a thicker layer of water, which provides improved lubrication. Early testing confirmed that Thermablade technology cuts starting resistance by up to 75% and gliding resistance by as much as 55%. Additional experiments with actual skaters proved that oxygen consumption, heart rate and lactic acid build-up are all significantly reduced, creating an overall physiological advantage of approximately 10%."
