Chris Simon Faces More Punishment From NHL

Notice the huge difference in the way this was handled and the way the Flyers and their players have handled things.

Simon and the Isle are taking steps to help him in the future, they (he and the team) are showing true remorse and sorrow. Not that he hurt Ruutuu that badly but he shows an understanding for what he did, and his team is showing they want to help him.

The Flyers on the other hand have pretty much left their guys standing in the rain to handle the back lash by themselves. They took a wait and see approach with the suspensions, had they stepped up and took some responsibility or showed that they gave a crap about something besides how this will effect W's or L's then maybe people wouldn't be bashing them.

Kudos to the Islanders and Simon for the steps taken after the incident, but this is another act by him that should never happen. Both of his most recent acts were out of frustration and showed he has no control over his emotions.

For arguments sake, lets just say that he does this to Crosby. Does that change anything, and more importantly should it change anything?

Yes it would, but no it shouldn't.

No doubt if it was Crosby, Simon would get double the suspension he will get. It shouldn't change anything, but since when does Campbell and Co. give a damn about parity?

Has this been posted yet?

Islanders owner gave Simon a leave of absence to basically figure his sh*t out if he ever wants to play hockey again. I think this is a pre-emptive move before the NHL comes down, but still a good idea. Anything that gets this guy out of the league.

Simon has been granted time away from the team to seek counselling, or any other method to help restore his career.

"The Islanders and I agree that the right thing to do is for me to take some time away from the team" said Simon in a prepared statement.

EDIT: ahh, just saw it's already been posted. I somehow missed it the first time through.

Chris Simon's game is played on the edge, not that different from a guy like McCarty, but Simon's skill has started to decline a little and he appears to be reacting out of frustration a lot.

When you live on that edge you have two ways to go, one is to keep playing hard nosed, like a Dallas Drake type player, and the other is not pretty and is illegal (in the NHL as well as the streets).

I agree with Harold, he needs time away from the game at least the rest of the year, if not forever.

Swinging a stick at another person's face as well as trying to stomp out their Achilles can not be tolerated, he is taking people's lives as well as their careers in his hands, or feet as the case may be.

What if.... another for arguments sake, he tries one of these stunts again, and it turns into another Bert/Moore incident. The league would be heavily scrutinized if not sued for not preventing it. Especially when Simon is giving them so many signs that he is on the verge of out of control.

And it is not that far fetched of a what if, I mean his stick swinging started out with more of a malicious intent than Bert's punch, just the outcome was far less severe, and it was not premeditated by the coach and team.

Pretty dispicable act by Simon there.

I know he plays a hard/physical game, and I think a lot of us would definitely be lying if we didn't blow gaskets at least once or twice while involved in playing sport (even though a lot of our games aren't at the highest level of competitions), I know I've done it a few times when I was a kid playing basketball, often did it playing golf, but it's just hard to see somebody stoop to do something that bad as Simon did, even though we've seen some pretty bad acts in the not-so-recent past (i.e. Bertuzzi, McSorely, etc.)

We all have to learn to play with some control, no matter what sport we are in/level of competition.

Hopefully Simon can learn from his past recent mistakes.

Acts like that make me sick. Flat out. I'm all about grit and grind, but there is a line between being 'rough' and being dangerous. He's crossed that line on more than one occasion and it's been well covered how dangerous a skate can be, intentional or not.

That said however, I'm actually rather proud of the Islanders organization for the way their front offices are handling this and helping this guy get the help he needs. He obviously has a few unresolved issues somewhere - be it his career isn't what he'd like it to be, or as someone commented, 'Happy Gilmore' complex :P whatever it may be. At least he's sensible enough to realize, that he does have a problem that needs to be addressed and is taking active steps towards doing so.

Kudos to them  They're a good organization to help him out instead of shunning him like a black sheep.

I think it's great the Islanders are going to help Simon get his head together and I also think it's wise for Simon to take some time off.

But given his history, any suspension short of the rest of the season AND the playoffs is a joke. He has had seven previous suspensions for intent to injure incidents and obviously he doesn't/can't/won't get the message. The NHL needs to put it's foot down (no pun intended) and let Simon - and the rest of the league - know this kind of crap won't be tolerated AT ALL. I mean, playing physical is fine and we all know players get hurt sometimes when they play. But this is uncalled for.

The NHL needs to send a strong, definitive message to Simon and the league and the only way to do that is to end Simon's season...now.

Totally agree. Simon's actions through out his career should at least justify a season suspension. I hardly think that McSorely had the history that Simon does but somehow I think PC has let him to stay in the league. Not that McSorely was banished, but that was the end of his career. Simon's taking a break is purely a PR thing in order to let him keep playing in the future. Too little to late. Banish him.

The guy is 36 next month, he is one of the old mould enforcers and I think that the new style NHL is passing him by. It maybe time for him to

call it a day and this incident may in a way help him come to that decision. When frustration over takes your self control its a downward

slope for one.
