No Norris for Nick

As angry as it makes me to type this: Nick will have a long way to go to beat out Niedermayer.

If Niedermayer puts up any kind of respectable numbers this season he will be handed the Norris. The media is already making him out to be the savior of the Ducks, and if their season takes a turn for the better then he will get all the credit. Just wait, at the end of the season Nicks numbers will be stellar (like always), but the powers that be will site the fact that Niedermayer played a shortened season, had decent numbers, and made a larger impact for his team as reasoning to pass over Nick. For example last year, looking at JUST the numbers for Nick, Pronger, and Scott, Nick was clearly better on paper. But up until the winner was announced every media person was spouting reasons why the trophy could go to either of the other two.

I hope I'm wrong... we'll have to wait and see.

This is impossible. By missing half of the season, Niedermeyer has pulled himself from the running for Norris. No matter what the Ducks do, Lidstrom will have played better for a whole season. I agree Neidermeyer will get all the credit for every Ducks win from here on out, which is ridiculus in it self. But Lidstrom has always been a far better defenseman then Neidermeyer, and the fact that he'll have twice as many games assures the Nick is a shoe-in for his 6th Norris. Don't worry, I can guarantee that...

I disagree, Niedermeyer loses votes because of his extended off season. He certainly won't gain anything. If he were to become Bobby Orr reincarnate and score 70 points in 50 games and have a +40, then maybe. His per game numbers won't be any better than Lidstrom's though.

Niedermayer won't win. Had Pronger played a full season last year, he probably would have won it, but he didn't play the full season.

I'm not sure I would go as far to say Lidstrom was "clearly" better on paper last year than those two. I think it was much closer than you are letting on. His +/- stat was clearly better than Niedermayer's but not the other stats. His +/- stat wasn't that much better than Pronger if you prorate Pronger for 82 games.

You're totally off man. No way they give the Norris to a guy who didn't even start playing until late December. Not to mention, Scotty boy played ALL season last year. And guess who won the Norris? Oh thats right, Nick Lidstrom. Doesn't matter if Scott plays all year, or some of the year. Nick Lidstrom is the superior defenseman. Hell, Niedermayer helped the Ducks with the Stanley Cup last season. And Nick STILL won the Norris. And will do so again. Except hopefully this time, a Stanley Cup will be included.

No MVP award of any sort will go to a player who voluntarily only plays half a season.

Playoffs aren't taken into account in Norris, Vezina, Hart, etc. voting.

Yikes, I didn't know individual hardware was determined after 30 or so games into a season of 80+ games.:lol:

Niedermeyer's chances of winning are much harder because he missed a good portion of the season so far, as has been stated a few times already in this thread.

And even if Lidstrom doesn’t win, I could really care less. It's something I have no control over, why get mad at it? I already know how good he is, and that's more than enough for me, and he's won it 4 times before, so it should already be a given that he's consistently one of the best defensemen in the league, so it's not like he's being "disrespected" or "slighted" in any way/shape/form.

Both Niedermeyer and Lidstrom are great defensemen, and I'm leaving it at that. Sorry, yeah I know I'm no fun. Niedermeyer perhaps getting consideration is nothing to get angry or have a hissy fit over, neither is Lidstrom possibly not winning it this year. There are worse tragedies in life.

Zubov has really improved his defensive game. Comes with age.

Just sayin'.

Zubov = Russian Nick. He's awesome for Dallas. But I don't know that he's ever been considered for a Norris. He is that good, however. It ain't always fair, but I can't see Neiderwhiner beating Nick out for Norris this season.

Not going to happen, even with a full season Niedermayer is second fiddle to Lidstrom. Aside from being a little bit more physical the only attribute Niedermayer has over Lidstrom is overrated hype, which last time I checked Niedermayer is number one on defesne in that category, which actually amazes me since he's a great player yet still remains overrated as all hell.

No way they give it to Niedermeyer.

Its going to be Lidstrom or Pronger, I think.

At this stage of the season, I don't even think Pronger's in the running statistically either. Last I saw, he was a -2 on the season.

Yeah, I know - I've been keeping up with his plus minus in my pool, and you are right its a negative factor. He just seems to be in on a lot of big goals for Anaheim thus far. If he improves his +/-, he has a shot.

P.S. Why don't we ever talk about any guys coming out of the East? Is the West just that much better defensively?

No way Niedermeyer will get any consideration. I think Nick's only competition is Zubov and I really don't think that is very close

I guess when you get to watch all the FSD games and have Ken & Mick point out all the incredible things that Nick does, you would be a little biased. Nick just does things so well that they usually go unnoticed as he did tonight when the broadcast was on VS and they really failed to point out the things he did during the game.

Oh I know. I was just saying that even if Scotty is playing at his best(enough to lead his team to a Cup win), he still isn't superior to Nick. It just shows how insanely good Lidstrom is. Even a Conn Smyth winner can't snag the Norris from Nick. Gotta love that.
