Darren McCarty Progress Thread

Mac not an enforcer? Really? He was enough of an enforcer that the Detroit Free Press put him number 3 in Detroit's all time top five enforcers. Wow! That is pretty good for somebody not being an enforcer. Also the key to probably the most monumental battle in the History of our Franchise.

Downey over Mac. Mac at his worst is equal to what Downey brings to the table. Sure the guy gets into some scraps but gets tossed around like a rag doll. I don't think he has ever won a fight in our jersey. Just think of Pronger and Parros sitting in the locker room before they play the wings.

Pronger: Hey mustache, dude I am gonna go elbow that punk ass Zetterberg's face off!!!

Parros: Dude, I told you stop callin me stache! I would'nt elbow him if I were you, Downey will come after you!

Pronger: s***, your right, he is big, tough and scary man I am gonna even follow the rules for like the first time in my career... Seriously I may have bad dreams tonight.

And you think a 36 year old McCarty would make them think differently?

I think you're not following me here. I LOVED McCarty as a Wing. But his last couple years as a Wing and his last year in Calgary showed a rapid decline in skill and fighting. Some would argue it was because of drugs, alcohol, etc. He was ALWAYS a big drinker. I saw Grinder and Mac was drinking a ton of beer, and that was 7 or 8 years ago. I think his decline in skill is more due to him being 36 (and those were 36 HARD years of living) than it is anything else. And if you read my entire post before you decide to go off on me, I suggested having McCarty in place of Drake and having Downey fill in occasionally. This isn't a Downey vs. Mac debate. I've gotta believe that Mac would bring as much or more to the table than Drake.

You mentioned that Downey hasn't won a fight as a Wing. That shows a lack of knowledge on the topic. You might want to check with Kyle Maclaren on that one.

In terms of Mac being an "Enforcer" go to youtube and type in mccarty oliwa, mccarty brashear, mccarty laraque, mccarty kocur, mccarty probert, mccarty souray, etc... Watch the fight and then tell me what an eforcer he is. He was a great wing that stood up for his teammates but when he fought the true heavyweights, he lost. His best fights were against Claudia and Reed Low and neither one of those guys can be called a heavyweight.

Wait, what? Reed Low not a heavyweight? I think you may have gotten him mixed up with someone else. Reed Low is very much a HW

I disagree. Low consistently got his butt kicked by true heavyweights. I guess it might be a matter of definition of heavyweight.

Reed Low was definitely a heavy imo rock. Hell, he was even borderline top 5 at one point (5-7 range). Yes he did start to go downhill, but was still a heavyweight.

Low beat the hell out of Tootoo, thus he's OK in my book.

I guess I consider the heavyweights to be the elite fighters. I can't imagine that anyone would put Low in the "elite" category. He fought a lot, I'll give him that and he won his fair share. However, when he fought the big boys he seemed to get pummeled.

It's not worth arguing about. It's simply a matter of definition. My definition of "true heavyweight" may be a little different.

Why does everybody think that McCarty is automatically deserving of an NHL spot and will drastically improve the Wings? Until he proves himself at the NHL level, there is no reason for him to take the spot of Downey, or even Drake.

No s***. No more "he can't beat a legitimate enforcer" talk.

I am with you that Downey did really well today against Parros. While he is a very exciting ball of energy not quite sure he makes enforcer status of a good win. He still has a few loses and he really does not fight all that much. I think maybe eight total this season. That is not many, maybe in today's NHL status it does.

Thats a good thing to have in an enforcer, though, because you know he isn't going to get blinded with rage every three games and cost your team a penalty. He picks his fights, and 99% of the time he picks a fight when the wings are loosing to gain momentum. He doesn't fight when the wings are winning, because theres no point. He knows his role and he plays it well.

Honestly, I don't think we really need a true "enforcer" per say, just someone who can man up against the opposition's big boy (legit enforcer or not) and leave the rest to Lilly, Drake, Kopecky, etc. Downey taking on Parros last night took a lot of pressure off of the other guys. In that sense Downey is doing well, and as others have said, he certainly understands when and where to do it.

peace,

esteef

I really curious, I haven't been following the national news, but how much has info on Mac been posted nationwide? How many people are really considering him as an option this year? There's two reasons for my thought, one the risk of losing him if he was called and sent back, and the more interesting question is if he's our ace up the sleeve?

By that I'm not saying Mac is our savior or anything, but most teams probably view us as weak in enforcement. I know that I do. Having him suddenly be on our roster completely changes that.
