Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 I see what your saying, But But But.. Drake brings more to the table then downey does.. Downey is not capable of playing defence or offence. When he does hit people he's the one who ends up on the ground and doesnt win his fights.. On the other hand Drake plays solid defence as of late improved his +/- since the beginning of the year. Picks smart fights and usualy puts up a fight. And can put a puck in the back of the net on a very random occasion. Believe me, Im all for an Enforcer, But downey is far from an enforcer. Not to mention i think a playoff enviroment would add a spark to the aging Drake knowing this is his last chance for the cup.

I agree for the most part, hence,I said sit Drake, and not send him to the AHL like you wanted for Downey. At the same time, I think You have to look at the fact that when Downey is on the ice, he's noticed. I never seem to notice Drake on the ice. Not always a bad thing, but specifically against teams like Anaheim, where they play a much more of a chippy game, I think he'd be much more help. Neither of them are here to score, and I realize Drake is a better skater, I just think that Downey has been giving the team a little more energy than Drake has. Either way, good luck D-Mac, and hope you do well!!! Edited February 5, 2008 by CdnWingsFanEh

I agree, I like Downey and wouldn't mind keeping him around but don't see him playing to much during the playoffs.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 As most people know (if by nothing else my s/n) I'm a huge Mac fan. That being said, people.....you really need to slow down. Mac is nowhere near being ready to play for *this* Red Wings team nor practically any team in the NHL. He's not in NHL shape yet and would struggle to keep up to speed. Let him play in Grand Rapids for a while and see what happens, but people really need to keep their head on their shoulders with this one. The Mac of the past isn't the same as the one that's here today, *yet*.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 To answer your question, didn't Mac sign a PTO contract only? I'm not even sure if that means he can be called up at this point.

Exactly....Im not sure who they would consider moving to allow Mac to be called up anyways.
interminded 1 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 He signed a try out contract for 25 games. That's not a 'real' contract.. I doubt Mac will make the NHL again though. He's a cool guy and he obviously has found the dedication to at it again, but let's be real: The fact he is not playing in the NHL is for a reason... Deep down we all know that, I guess. nkuehnl 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 Deep down we all know that, I guess. Too many Wing fans think that he is this year's Kocur, so, I wouldn't go as far as to say that people know that his comeback attempt is futile.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 If he could make it to the NHL though, then the Wings wouldn't need to worry about a trade. He'd be exactly the kind of player the Wings need right now. Still it's a big IF.

The Mac of the past isn't the same as the one that's here today, *yet*. Agreed. We all love DMac, so the last thing we want to see is for the Wings to give in to sentiment, put him out there before he's ready, get all amped up to fight Pronger and get his face bashed in. People are soooooo psyched for him to fight Pronger. Well, Pronger has five inches and about fifteen pounds on DMac and, unlike DMac, is in perfect game shape. auxlepli 17 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 If there's one thing the Wings to well it's develop players and pressure them unnecessarily. I doubt they'd rush McCarty back.

Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But Darren McCarty is not Joe Kocur. Some people talk about Kocur like he was playing for years in some beer league to make it a fairytale like story, but that wasn't the case. He played merely 5 games in the HL before the Wings brought him back to play 34 games in the 96-97 season. Bottom line is: We don't need Darren McCarty. It's simple as that. 40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 from MLIVE McCarty smiles his way through first practice as a Griffin--a bag skate Posted by George James Malik February 05, 2008 10:38AM Categories: Darren McCarty's come-back attempt, Griffins Darren McCarty was all smiles despite the fact that his first practice with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins was a "bag skate": February 5, Grand Rapids Press: Darren McCarty picked a tough day to join the Grand Rapids Griffins. McCarty officially signed with the team Monday and his first practice at Griff's IceHouse was a grueling 90-minute affair that left many players doubled over, gasping for air at the end of skating drills. "I knew it was going to be a tough day. (Coach Mike Stothers) warned me about it, but I can't think of a better way to come in here," McCarty said with a laugh. "As much as it sucked, I enjoyed it." McCarty figures that the occasional "bag skate" (think "motion discomfort bag") is just part of the process of reclaiming his hockey career and reorganizing his life, and after a solid performance in the IHL, he feels that he's ready to graduate to the next level of professional hockey: "Hopefully I can come in here and bring some experience, do what I do and sort of get my feet back under me," McCarty said. "Get my game back to where I know I can be effective." McCarty said the biggest challenge he still faces is getting back into game shape and bringing his speed back up to the NHL level. "Obviously I'm not where I want to be, but I think being here, practicing, is a perfect fit for me," he said. "It's not the most glamorous or enjoyable part of the game, but being away from it for a year and missing it, the masochist in me will enjoy being around it and doing all the hard stuff." McCarty told the Grand Rapids Press's Michael Zuidema that he wants to help the Red Wings out, and if that means being a good Griffin, it sounds like McCarty would understand if he spends the rest of the 07-08 season in the AHL: "The way I went out in Calgary and really the last few years in Detroit, it really wasn't me, so hopefully I can bring something back that will help bring success to this organization," McCarty said. "I think there's still a little bit of gas in the tank and any way that I can help at any level is what I'm looking forward to doing."
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 He has his goals higher than I thought if he's reaching for late 90's/early 00's McCarty. He seems hungry for it though, and confident that he has enough resources left to pull through. Hopefully everything works out.

I really hope he can pull it off and come up to the Wings and help the team out. I think that he has the desire to pull this off and that he really is capable of making it to the big club. Keep it up Mac, we are behind you.
