Blake pining to become a Wing?

Rob Blake is 39. I would leave him be, we have enough age on our team.

We need someone younger, I would go with Hossa because if we put him on a line, then Z and Dats on different, lines what would the opposing team do? Thats 3 lines with an All-Star on them plus i think we have the supporting cast to make each line a threat.

^just a thought, im not a hockey expert by any stretch of the imagination

Also, Pronger being better than Nick is just a joke no where near as smart of a player

To get Hossa it will cost us way to much to get a rental player.. I'd rather go with a Rob Blake as he has the playoff experience and i think he would strive with us

We wouldn't get Hossa as a rental. It would be a sign and trade.

We could probably get both, Hossa long term and Blake as a rental. What is Blake's contract situation?

You guys need to get real on these Hossa rumors. He isn't going to re-sign here if we got him, unless they threw an Ovechkin-esque money contract at him. Why do you think Ottawa traded him in the first place? The Senators wanted to give him a long term contract to stay on a Cup contender, but he instead told them he would rather test the free agent market and get as much money as he possibly could. And with the recent contracts that were handed out this year (Daniel Briere, I'm looking at you) Hossa is going to have a field day in the bidding wars. Teams will pay high over the actual value of a player for some reason.

I question Hossa's determination to win after hearing about that. The money Ottawa was offering him was not exactly low-balling it. He could have gotten a lot of money, and stayed on a team he had a great chance to win a Cup with, and instead declined. Ottawa didn't want to lose him for nothing, so instead signed him to a peliminary deal, and afterwards traded him to Atlanta for Heatley.

Besides that, the Wings don't have the talent to give up for him. The talent pool in GR is extremely thin. Our top 3 goal scorers down there are Carl Corazzini, Mark Hartigan, and Mark Cullen. Are you noticing the trend here? All three of them are over 30 journymen who can't crack an NHL roster. Nobody is going to want those guys, since they'll probably be free agents next year anyways.

...and even if the Wings did somehow manage to strum up the talent needed for Hossa, why would you want to give up all that for a playoff rental? As I said before: Hossa isn't going to re-sign here, unless they give him the Grand Cayman Bank in the process. He's made his plans to test the free agent market quite publicly known, and unless he suddenly changes his mind, he's probably going to stick to them.

Exactly and like people have said it will cost a lot more to get Hossa than Blake. Hossa is much younger and the fact that Atl is still in the playoff hunt so it would take a lot to get him away. But after last year you get Blake.

Lidstrom - Rafalski

Kronwall - Blake

Lebda - Chelios

Lilja

Meech

Quincey

After the injuries last year you want to add some depth there. I would love to see him and maybe see if you can add any depth up front.

Not necessarily. Sign them both for 7.5 mil. There's 15, plus Dats 6 (20), Nick's 7.5 (27.5), Raf's 6 (33.5). There's still 20 mil out there. We would have to give up people to get him, and those guys have contracts, too. We wouldn't be able to keep the second tier guys like Huds, Fil, Mule, etc. And Grand Rapids can't plug those holes.

That said, I find it unlikely. Hossa wants more, and even if he did take 7.5, I doubt Holland would want to have so little cap flexibility. But, damn, let a man dream.

You just gave yourself my argument. One article I read broke it down with estimated salary increases and with signing both Z and with a cap increase they would have 55mil tied up in 18 players. So if the estimated cap was 56mil in a couple years that would be 1mil for 5 players and any possible injuries.

Blake> Hossa if it comes down to one. Defense wins championships and ours has been looking rather porous lately. It's really starting to seem like a mistake that we didn't drop the $$$ on Markov. Now we're going to end up giving up prospects and taking a bigger cap hit on Blake.

Except when everyone complains that the Wings don't score enough in the playoffs, need secondary scoring, etc, etc.

So, should we start the "Blake Sucks" or "Blake is a Disappointment" threads yet? (Kinda like the Rafalski thread that's going on right now)

No matter what D-man is added, if any, fans will be dissapointed by him because he's not as good Saint Nick.

...well we know not many (if any) are as good as Nick, but who is complaining about Rafalski? My God, Jesus! He's #2 in scoring behind Nick!!!! We knew what we were getting when they signed him, did people think that he was gonna come in and become a hitter? If Nick was retired, then we'd STILL have the #1 scorer in the league, Brian Rafalski! Jesus, does he have to be tied with Nick to get some respect!?!?! I don't recall Schneider ever being #2 behind Nick while he was here!

...anyhow, Blake would be a nice addition, but so would many other players (Fedorov, Foote, Hossa, Sundin, Forsberg.) Since we can't obviously get them all, lets hope that Holland chooses the right ingrediant (if he does at all.)

...Would Blake and Fedorov be the mix to put us into the Stanley Cup? They'd bring the playoff experience, Cup winning experience to boot! I think it would cost less to aquire Fedorov and Foote though...

Hossa and Sundin are probably least possible..they would cost too much to bring in. Foote and Blake could be available for relatively nothing (Sammy? :D). Foppa coming to Detroit seems unlikely to me..

I would say Detroit has the best chance of landing Forsberg. Swede friendly and the #1 Cup contender. But at the same time, will they pay him what he thinks he deserves.

It would definitely be a Bertuzzi-like situation though. High risk and a low probability of high reward. But... he could be stronger than ever after a break...

EDIT: addition

Columbus is currently second in the division and fighting for a playoff spot, while LA is dead last in the league. I think you're much more likely to see Detroit pick up someone from the Kings.

Ok let me say it now, Hossa isn't coming to to the wings.. And if people do think he is, please tell me what you think the wings would have to give up for a rental player again.. Im willing to listen

I don't think that he is coming to Detroit, but I do think that it is within the realm of possibility. And I hope that he is.

I think to acquire him as a rental would take Hudler, Sammy, mid to high level prospect (Quincey, Meech, Smith or Kindl) and a pick or two. I think to acquire him already signed to a long term contract would take all that plus Kronwall.

So. Do I think that we have the assets to match offers that other teams could put together? Yes, I do. Do I think that Holland would make that trade? Not likely...
