division switch

Why don't Dallas and Vancouver switch divisions? Wouldn't it make a little more sense?

Vancouver

Anaheim

SJ

LA

Phoenix

Minnesota

Calgary

Edmonton

Colorado

Dallas

You must have been the same guy that called in on XM Radio Ice Caps, Thurs and asked Bettman that very same question. Vancouver would have to want to move. And as Bettman said, thats not going to happen.

Which would explain why Nashville plays the team closest to it, at best, once a season...

Can't make divisional arrangements based on what's closest to just one team. Giving Nashville a division with Atlanta and the rest of the teams closest to Nashville would then cause the Florida teams to have to travel farther.

Anyway, being physically close is far more important on the West Coast than the eastern side of the country given the much longer travel distances. An hour of time change is less important than two extra hours in the air.

Detroit and Atlanta should switch conferences too,but that wont happen either.

Its just no fuseable.

Detroit switching would be stupid, although it could make the east a decent conference. The Ilitchs claim the wings should move conferences because of their time zone and the fact games are on too late are causing an attendence drop. Seeing the wings in the Northeast division would be pretty awesome. I guess youd have to take Boston and stick them in the Atlantic, and move an atlantic team in the southwest, and take atlanta and put them in the central. All that would do would weaken an already boring to watch and s***ty in everyway(mins the wings) division. Its just stupid. The wings are a western conference team and thats how it will stay.

Vancouver in the pacific would be retard as well. The matchups they have with the flames are oilers are what some canadians live for. It just makes for better hockey.

gives a pretty cool map of all the teams

I dont care if its feasible, but its not stupid. The Wings should be in the eastern conference they are in the Eastern time zone. It may take another West coast team for this to happen though, even then the leaugue would probably be stupid and choose Columbus as the team to move.

Both Columbus and Detroit are in the Eastern Time Zone. It would take two expansion teams out west or two moves.

In my guesstimation they don't switch because they want Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary in the same division. Those three teams are relatively close together.

I'm sure Vancouver-Calgary-Edmonton Rivarlies is the main reason, and I wonder too, it makes less flights between the two countries. The players won't have to go through customs as much.

Two expansions teams would make it happen, but if one eastern team moved west, they would have no choice but to have a team switch conferences. For example Nashville moving to Kansas City.

That'd still leave an EST team in the Western Conference. Two teams would have to move.

If the Wings switch conferences, I don't have to stay up till 2 in the morning during finals week to watch playoff games. That sounds good to me.

A-MEN.

At least this year we have a chance of playing a divisional opponent though.

Um, I'm not seeing your logic here. Nashville's already in the Western Conf. Moving them further west would do nothing to change/enhance that.

Youre right, thats what happens when you do two things at once.I sthould have said Florida to Kansas City.

Both Columbus and Detroit are in the Eastern Time Zone. It would take two expansion teams out west or two moves.

To solve this problem, with existing teams:

Three conferences of ten teams each.

The existing NW and Pacific divisions remain the same.

The 'Central' conference would see the entire Central division, plus Atlanta, Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa, and Pittsburgh.

Remaining teams in the 'Eastern' conference.

To solve this problem, with expansion adding two teams to Western conference cities:

We'll use KC and Vegas for this exercise since they appear to be the frontrunners for any expansion.

Move Detroit east, and divide each conference into four divisions.

WEST:

Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas

Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Colorado

Dallas, St.Louis, Phoenix, KC

Minnesota, Chicago, Columbus, and Nashville

EAST:

Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina

New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington

Montreal, Boston, NY Islanders, NY Rangers

Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo, Toronto

The most feasible solution seems to be an Eastern team moving West in addition to two expansion teams. This would imbalance the conferences to 18-14, meaning two teams (Detroit and Columbus) would have to shift to the East. Florida to Houston/Portland/Indianapolis seems to be the logical candidate for a move added onto the scenario above, with Colorado, St.Louis, and Columbus as teams potentially switching divisions in the West, and a huge reorganization of the East necessary, possibly as outlined below:

EAST:

Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Washington

New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa

Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo
