omnipotent_hudler 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Hopefully Phaneuf pans out for Calgary. Right now I don't think he is worth 6.5 per year, but then again most of the contracts being signed lately make my head hurt. Maybe this will end up as a steal in a few years for the Flames. akustyk 84 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 (edited) that's my question: what has he done to warrant this big money? all I keep hearing is how Phaneuf has great potential and is second coming of Jesus Christ. then I see last playoffs and Phaneuf is bust who has a good hit once in a while but other than that shows little and is regullary owned by Wings players. whatever is their cure. Flames are far from my favourite team and I'd gladly see them burying some future Edited February 1, 2008 by akustyk
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 If he stays healthly and improves with age as he should... great contract for both parties.
Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Yeah but it's a gamble all teams are eventually forced to make. Otherwise the RFA player can hold out and recieve an offer sheet. Someone else WILL pay it. So you lock them up long term and hope it pays off. I think this contract will be fair overall.
Booster313 138 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 It makes the 3million per season for Kronwall see like a steal!
Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Somewhere in Nashville Ryan Suter is grinning from ear to ear....
irishtemper14+25 11 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 well i dont think he earns 6.5 mil right now, but i think he will be sweet in a couple years
wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 I think the deal is a 6 year 40 million, at least that's what it said on sportsnet... But I really like doube Dion he's a monster. The Flames had to sign him
Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 It's a case of if you dont lock him, You risk loosing the next great d-man. and 6years from now, heck maybe even 3-4, 6.5m will seem like a bargain.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Somewhere in Nashville Ryan Suter is grinning from ear to ear.... Why on earth would Suter think he's anywhere near Phaneuf's level? Suter shouldn't even be expecting KRONWALL money let alone Phaneuf money. Suter is less offensively capable than Kronner at this point and unlike Kronwall he isn't as good in his own end as he is in the opposing end. Suter for 2m-2.5m sounds about right. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 It makes the 3million per season for Kronwall see like a steal! Well, Phaneuf has accomplished a lot more to earn this contract than Kronwall had at the time he signed his deal for $3 million a year. He's also over 4 years younger than Kronwall and has played about 60 more games in the NHL.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 (edited) Somewhere in Nashville Ryan Suter is grinning from ear to ear.... No way Suter get's that kind of money. He's a good player, but he's not worth nearly 7 million a season. He was even a healthy scratch a couple times this season (all be it after returning from injury, but still). Now... Shea Weber on the other hand... Edited February 1, 2008 by Kp-Wings
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 A PP specialist if ever there was one, more than half his points come with the man advantage. A very good young defenceman, good signing for the Flames.
zata40 3 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 saw this coming. the flames would be stupid to give up a player like him. good move

PP QB... 20 goals rookie year... 49 and 50 points in his first two seasons in the league, on pace for 50 again... a plus player... one of the most intimidating players in the league... it's a great signing

Elshupacabra 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 This is a great deal for the Flames, in two or three years, this deal will look like an absolute steal.

My apologies I mixed up Nashville's two young d-men. I was referring to Shea Weber. The fact that he's only played half the season through me off. I don't really follow Nashville that much but remember reading that Weber's agent would use Phaneuf's contract as leverage in negotiations. Not that he's at that level yet but would still command a very hefty raise.

He's also over 4 years younger than Kronwall and has played about 60 more games in the NHL. WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 (edited) I thought Kronner was making 1.5 mil ? http://nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerSearchV2.asp?OIDTeam=8369 Technically he is only making $1.5M this year but the cap hit is the average salary over the course of the contract. Therefore, his cap hit will be $3M through 2011-2012. Edited February 1, 2008 by WhiteLightning91

akustyk 84 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 > 22 years old... check > biggest hitter in the league... one of the biggest. check > logs huge minutes for Calgary... he's D-man actually.... > PP QB... OK... there are many PP QB in this league > 20 goals rookie year... check > 49 and 50 points in his first two seasons in the league, on pace for 50 again... check > a plus player... check > one of the most intimidating players in the league... possibly there's one thing you forgot to add: it's not just points and stats that define top tier players. it has a lot to do with their playoff show. and in this case Phaneuf has little to show. he's been very unspectacular against the Wings last year yes, he's 22 and has yet time to mature. and this is my point: $6.5 M is a bold money for this guy at this moment. this relies on the assumption he's going to be better. this is very likely to be the case, though
