Phaneuf re-signs: 6-years, $39m

that's my question: what has he done to warrant this big money?

all I keep hearing is how Phaneuf has great potential and is second

coming of Jesus Christ.

then I see last playoffs and Phaneuf is bust who has a good hit

once in a while but other than that shows little and is regullary

owned by Wings players.

whatever is their cure. Flames are far from my favourite team and

I'd gladly see them burying some future

Yeah but it's a gamble all teams are eventually forced to make. Otherwise the RFA player can hold out and recieve an offer sheet. Someone else WILL pay it. So you lock them up long term and hope it pays off. I think this contract will be fair overall.

Somewhere in Nashville Ryan Suter is grinning from ear to ear....

Why on earth would Suter think he's anywhere near Phaneuf's level? Suter shouldn't even be expecting KRONWALL money let alone Phaneuf money. Suter is less offensively capable than Kronner at this point and unlike Kronwall he isn't as good in his own end as he is in the opposing end. Suter for 2m-2.5m sounds about right.

It makes the 3million per season for Kronwall see like a steal!

Well, Phaneuf has accomplished a lot more to earn this contract than Kronwall had at the time he signed his deal for $3 million a year.

He's also over 4 years younger than Kronwall and has played about 60 more games in the NHL.

No way Suter get's that kind of money. He's a good player, but he's not worth nearly 7 million a season. He was even a healthy scratch a couple times this season (all be it after returning from injury, but still).

Now... Shea Weber on the other hand...

22 years old... biggest hitter in the league... logs huge minutes for Calgary... PP QB... 20 goals rookie year... 49 and 50 points in his first two seasons in the league, on pace for 50 again... a plus player... one of the most intimidating players in the league... it's a great signing

My apologies I mixed up Nashville's two young d-men. I was referring to Shea Weber. The fact that he's only played half the season through me off. I don't really follow Nashville that much but remember reading that Weber's agent would use Phaneuf's contract as leverage in negotiations. Not that he's at that level yet but would still command a very hefty raise.

I thought Kronner was making 1.5 mil ?

Technically he is only making $1.5M this year but the cap hit is the average salary over the course of the contract. Therefore, his cap hit will be $3M through 2011-2012.

possibly

there's one thing you forgot to add: it's not just points and stats that

define top tier players. it has a lot to do with their playoff show. and in

this case Phaneuf has little to show. he's been very unspectacular

against the Wings last year

yes, he's 22 and has yet time to mature. and this is my point: $6.5 M

is a bold money for this guy at this moment. this relies on the assumption

he's going to be better. this is very likely to be the case, though
