Wings fans are spoiled

Seriously, it seems like a lot of Wings fans are impossible to please.

We have 2 great goalies, we've added toughness since last year, we have a bunch of players playing very well (Cleary and Kronwall are out, but they'll be back for playoffs) and we are leading the league in points.

Quit your whining!

I'm so sick of people saying we have no chance of winning the cup and that we need to make major trades and such. Go root for the ******* Thrashers or the Bruins or the Leafs or basically any other team in the league and then tell me how bad you have it being a Wings fan.

Even Anaheim fans have only been able to watch a good team for the last few years. We've been able to watch a cup-contending team for over a decade now.

I consider myself lucky. That doesn't mean I think we should get complacent with the team, but I hardly think we are. Holland, Yzerman and Babcock have great work ethic and that trickles down to the rest of the team.

Hardly.

What people want is a truly well-rounded team. A couple seasons ago, we didn't have enough grit. It hurts us in the postseason, people complained, the problem was more or less addressed, and it paid off. Now there are a couple "new" problems that need to be addressed -- namely, the second line and our lack of a big, physical, stay-at-home blue-liner who can log big minutes without being a liability.

A big part of winning is keeping tabs on your weaknesses.

To the OP

Spot on my man (or woman)!!!!!

But you do realize those people that do whine or were whining or are whining are going to now call you a whiner and tell you that they can post whatever they want. Some will even tell you they don't care about winning long term they just want a cup this year, until next year starts and then they will ***** and moan about the team sucking and looking back Holland made a mistake trading so and so for player x. Some will tell you that Pavel doesn't hit enough and they should trade him, some will say Z's back will forever be a problem trade him. People will call for Flip's head, Huds too.

The only players who seem immune to this LGW thrashing are Homer, Cleary, Downey, Draper, Lids(well this one is obvious) and Maltby for some reason.

Lessons I have learned from my nearly 10 years on LGW:

1)This team will always need grit, no matter who they pick up they will not be gritty enough.

2) People will always want old wings back, and for some reason the worse they have done away from Detroit the more people want them back to "Revive their career".

3) The Goaltending will NEVER be good enough.

4)Threads will be repeated, even if there are three threads about one topic on the front page, it will be repeated.

5)If a poster dislikes a player for whatever reason, it is the same reason everyone else should hate them.

6)There will always be a LGW whipping boy. Trust me this team could lose the 1st game of the year and then go 81-0, and there will be some one who "sucks and is lazy©", Can't pass, Can't shoot, shoots too much, doesn't shoot enough, etc.

Some people there is no pleasing

I think people are just afraid of seeing another playoff disappointment. When you finish 1st every year and fail to make the finals, that means that a certain piece is missing to the team, whatever it may be. The blind homers on LGW act like the Wings won the Cup last year or the year before, but in reality, it's been a while since this team got over the hump of making it through the West, even though they've had a great team every year since the Cup run. People just want to see the weaknesses on this team improved, and there's nothing wrong with that. And telling fans to go root for another team is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If I think that Anaheim is tougher than us, then that doesn't mean that I should go become a Ducks fan, it just means that I'm concerned about us matching up to them.

Wings fans TODAY are spoiled... if you've been a fan of them back in the 80's... then you know what we've come from.

Yes, we win. We win alot. But for the times that we go on a 4 game skid and people start freaking out?

All I can say is thank god we're not the Kings... We've been there, and we've improved from there.

OP: I agree with what you said to an extent. I do think Wings fans complain way too much about ridiculous things that other teams would love to have as their biggest problem. However, I do think it's important to take note of what areas need improvement. Personally, I feel that we need a big, tough defenseman who also knows how to play and a forward who can put the puck in the net while also showing some grit (Iginla-type, although someone of that level will be basically impossible to get, but someone with that type of play) for the playoffs. I do not think that this team would win the Cup if it went into the playoffs as it is today (and I'm thinking how it is today as if all the injured guys were back). They need two or three more pieces in my opinion for them to make it to the Cup. I have no problem with people expressing what they think needs to be done to win or stating that they don't think we currently have what it takes to get a Cup. What annoys me beyond words are the posters who make the ridiculous sweeping statements, especially when they don't back them up in any way or explain them further. Examples: "The Wings won't win the Cup this year" and that is the entire post; "Sammy sucks, Lilja is awful, I hope Lang burns in hell" and that is the entire post; "The defense sucks except for Lidstrom" and that is the entire post; etc. I'm not saying every post has to be an essay, but at least when a person makes some huge statement that they seem to think everyone should agree with, back it up with something. Those are the complainers who annoy me b/c it seems they are complaining just to complain and have nothing to support their whining.

Very good points, but the thing that I was thinking about was not so much the people who say "the wings should get tougher, or player x" as much as the people who say the wings NEED this, or Player X sucks, or I wish this team was like the flyers. Well in that case if you like the flyers play so much go root for them, because if you expect the wings to play that way you haven't been a fan of theirs for very long. (Not you, you in general).

I think the OP was more referring to the lunatic fringe, which exists on both ends. People who blindly follow what the wings are doing, and those that have a "no matter what they do it is not enough'.

This board has been filled with the latter lately, people who want to see the Wings lead the league in fighting minutes as well as goals for and goals against, won't be happy until a red wing is tops is all statistical categories. Which will never happen!

we are :)

But do you want all of us to act the same way, with the same beliefs?

That would be completly boring! What would the use of a forum be without peoples point of views or dissagreements and so forth... I wouldnt come here if everyone believed the same thing and agreed about everything everbody else does. Its a discussion board and we discuss, everyone should share their own thoughts and not state "That was a good goal...yes it was Johnny!....Dont you think Osgood is sooo good!...Ow ya Billy, We all love him". Yes we are spoiled and I do realize that some ***** alittle too much, but as I stated before if we always agreed apon everything, then Superman54 would not exsist on this board!

So true man... and when they get a goalie thats good, they can and have turned on him in a new york minute. Example of recent years was Mike Vernon. When the Devils swept the Wings Vernon was the one that took the majority of the blame, I think he had it worse than Legace did when he choked vs the Oilers 2 years ago. Cheveldae and Keith Primeau were the nightly targets of the Joe Louis faithful....Essensa was all but run out of town.

Really?

Honestly?

Seriously?

Not hyperbolically?

Starting a thread here to call out, what, five or six lunatic fringe posters is stupid, especially when the OP doesn't even understand where the supposed lunatics are coming from. When people say we need something, it's usually for good reason -- even if the urgency is often overstated. For example: no, I don't think we need to lead the league in fighting majors, but I do think it's worth considering the sad notion that someone can run any of our stars without having to truly own up to it (no offense to Downey, but come on). What's to stop Pronger from "accidentally" taking a liberty with Hank's back? Certainly not the fear of being pounded by a Wing, let alone the possibility of a severe punishment from the league. Just some food for thought.
