zaxx 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Just browsing the "news" sites and came accross an article by some out of touch sports writers discussing how the Maple Leafs are pushing for the playoffs. I know they have won a few games recently but come on, they are on the edge of disaster and have to win every remaining game to get into the Playoffs.... wow it must be difficult to be a Leafs fan. Article: http://sports.sympatico.msn.cbc.ca/TopStor...onto-new-jersey Standings: (Eastern Conference) 1 Pittsburgh Penguins* 81 2 Montréal Canadiens* 81 3 Carolina Hurricanes* 73 4 New Jersey Devils 80 5 Ottawa Senators 80 6 Boston Bruins 76 7 New York Rangers 76 8 Philadelphia Flyers 74 9 Buffalo Sabres 71 10 Washington Capitals 70 11 New York Islanders 69 12 Toronto Maple Leafs 68 13 Florida Panthers 66 14 Atlanta Thrashers 65 15 Tampa Bay Lightning

Winged Scooter 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Not to mention the fact that even IF the Leafs DID tear up the league for the next 3 weeks, they would have to leap frog 4 teams to get that last spot, which is damn near impossible!
kylee 727 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 no play-offs coming for the Leafs...again. kinda sad to see really..
akustyk 84 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 it's Canadian media. expect them to write about Oilers deserving playoff spot ahead of "those American teams". chances of Leafs making playoffs are lower than me screwing Scarlett Johanson. period
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Thing is that 6 points isn't that difficult to overcome, the biggest problem for the Leafs is the amount of teams that they have to leap frog in order to get into the playoffs.
DRW Dominance 255 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Living very close to Toronto you will hear a lot about the playoffs now but for the most part the realists understand they won't make it and should tank a little to get in the lottery draft.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 It's definitely possible, but they're going to need help from the teams between them and the 8th spot. I really hope they can do it, though. It would be nice to see the Leafs have a chance to verse the Senators in the playoffs, and potentially the Wings, but thats me getting ahead of myself. German Red Wing 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 If the Leafs are in a playoff push, so are Florida and Atlanta. The patient is kicking out a last time before he flatlines - not more, not less. Since T.O. does not play in the Southeast, they won't make it this year.

cirov19 1 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Seriously guys, come on. I know the Leafs chance is almost nil. But three wins for one team, and three losses for another is not a hard thing to accomplish. Of course, it is not just the Flyers who have to lose but also the Caps, the Sabres and the Isles. Which, as was pointed out earlier, is nearly impossible. So the Leafs do actually have the slightest chance. A lot of things can happen in a month, that you would never expect. For example: Detroit going through a 2-10 slump? I thought I would say that even though I am almost guaranteeing for the Leafs to not make the playoffs. Canadian media is really disappointing when this is the kind of stuff they begin to write about. It's so good to be a Wings fan.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 In January The Toronto Star had some dude do calculations and said the Leafs had a 3% chance of making the playoffs. I'd imagine it's down to 1 or 2 % now. I can't believe how much of a free ride the Leafs get in Toronto. You'd think after all these years, no one would talk about them or go to games anymore. But the majority of time they're being talked about on the sports stations, and the arena is packed. This whole Sundin thing drives me crazy too. There's so many people who say, "Oh well, it's not Sundin's fault, JFJ gave him the no trade", "Oh well it's his choice", "It's not up to Sundin to fix the organization". I'm in the huge minority who thinks Sundin should have been forced by the team to waive his no-trade, and that fans and media should have been giving him a lot of pressure to leave. But you have media people coming on tv/radio telling people not to give Mats a hard time. I don't get it, the team will be much better off if Sundin was traded. Now Sundin is saying he's not sure if he's going to play next year. It's insane, and no one seems to care. Look at the guys we booed out of town, I guess that's why we've seen 7 Major Championships since 1984, and Toronto has 2.
awingsincebirth 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 What I find most ridiculous about this claim is the fact that this is nothing new. The Leaf's entire season has gone much in this way; 3 steps forward, 4 steps back. There is no real reason to believe that the Leaf's will be able to keep up this torrid pace for the rest of the season. Leaf supporters, at least all the ones I know (and that is quite a few cuz I'm real close to T Dot) are so delusional - a couple of wins and they think they are Cup contenders, a couple of losses and they start calling for heads on platters - and this cycle never seems to stop. But, let's not forget that this is the Leafs. I have very a firm confidence that they will find a way to be eliminated on the last day of the regular season, and they will get the worst possible draft pick of all playoff teams. They are that incredibly mediocre.
SnipeShow 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 No playoffs and no lottery, that would be funny! Thats my dream. I hate the Leafs with such a burning passion that I could not explain it to you. I hope they lose the 8th seed via some other team beating another team in a shootout just like last year. Christ if any of you saw the game the night before that of Toronto vs. Montreal you will have to agree with me that the refs swung the game huge in the 3rd. The Leafs ended the 2nd and had half the 3rd on a power-play to catch up and win that one. Made me sick to watch. The next day I was at a family get together and we all watched the game (my family being Leaf fans) and they were all tense and hopeful... the Islanders ended up beating the Devils in a shootout for that 8th seed. How excited was I?!
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 I'm apparently in the minority, but I'd love for the Leafs to become a good team again. It'd be great for hockey. It wouldn't be the same because of these lovely conferences, but I miss the days of the rivalry between Detroit and Toronto.
German Red Wing 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 In January The Toronto Star had some dude do calculations and said the Leafs had a 3% chance of making the playoffs. I'd imagine it's down to 1 or 2 % now. According to this site (which was mentioned in another thread some time ago), the chance is actually 6.5% prior to the games tonight... Other numbers are: Philadelphia - 74.4% Carolina* - 64.6% Buffalo - 35.0% Washington - 32.9% NY Islanders - 12.7% Florida - 3.7% Atlanta - 4.9% *currently 1st in Southeast Detroit, by the way, has a chance of 99.99611% or, in other terms, misses the playoffs in 73 out of 10,000,000 times. It creates no chirping opportunities... at all. Actaully, there are so many chirping opportunities that it is no longer amusing. I want them to make playoffs though, and I think they can although they are going to have to work there asses off... If they lose today against Jersey then I am going to say that they are done. Especially if Buffalo beats the Flyers and Boston beats the Panthers.

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 Not to ruin on the parade, but there is still time to make a run, provided they have some help as well. Remember when Colorado just came out of nowhere last year, only lost maybe twice or three times and just missed going into the playoffs by 1 or 2 points? Different teams obviously, but while the odds are against them, it isn't impossible for Toronto to make it.
