How are we liking Brad Stuart?

He's the reason the Wings were trade deadline losers. So like Dallas27 said he is lazy and sucks. Why couldn't we get a big time player to come in and score goals.

side note Ducks deadline trade was Brad May who wound up fitting in real well during the playoffs

Stuart will dominate in the playoffs

Stuart is a good addition, I think. He adds physicality, which is something we definitely need in a non-enforcer, and he's also a solid young defensman. Just last night he directly prevented a goal from going in, when Hasek was sprawled across the ice. Yes I defintetly would've preferred a top six forward, but I'm not dissapointed at all in his acquisition. Besides, maybe with him in the lineup we can get rid of Lilja, Lebda, and/or Sammy for a real top six forward in the offseason.

Say (God forbid) the Wings get into the same situation as last year and Rafalski and Kronwall go down. Is Stuart "unnecessary" then?

This is why Stuart was acquired.

That's asinine thinking. Why acquire a guy for a what-if situation when our offensive depth is a guaranteed problem?

What if Cleary doesn't come back and Filppula also goes down? I trust Ericsson and Meech to step in and play big minutes far more than I trust a Hudler-Franzen-Samuelsson 2nd line to produce.

I hate to re-hash this argument, but A. Stuart provides offense from the point and B. Who was out there (aside from Hossa) that would've made an impact?

Prospal is the only one I can think of that was affordable, but I don't think he would be a good fit here.

If Cleary and Flip go down, that's our #4 and #5 forward going down. That would be the equivalent of losing just one of Kronwall or Rafalski on the back end. Losing Schneider and Kronwall last year is equivalent to losing our #3 through #6 forwards...basically if this year's Wings lost Homer, Cleary, Flip, and Hudler and had a second line of Franzen/Kopecky/Samuelsson, with Drake/Draper/Maltby/Downey/McCarty/Hartigan rounding out the bottom two lines.

I really like Stuart so far, and I have to admit the team is looking better. These past two wins have taken the sting off not making a major splash at the trade deadline. I think the injuries and the loosing streak really amplified the situation beyond what it was.

I agree, I think the main problem here is that the choices were limited with the options detroit had trade wise...who else could they have really gotten that would have made the difference people are expecting?

I've been happy with Stuart's play so far, and if he steps up in the playoffs he could be a real asset.

The Wings would have had to give up one of their better players plus a top prospect or a high pick to land the kind of forward people wanted. This would have been something like Ericsson+1st or Filppula+1st. The latter is what Columbus asked for to get Fedorov. Prospal cost Philly something similar to the former, and so would have cost Detroit more to top the offer.

No top six forward was traded who the Wings could afford based on what they could or would give up. Not one. Several forwards who wouldn't crack our top six were moved...but that doesn't help us in the need for a top six forward does it?

A top four defenseman was a more pressing need anyway. Going into the deadline, we had seven top-six forwards and three top-four defensemen. Yes, we have three #1 defensemen, but our bottom three were all third-pairing guys at the deadline.

I like him a lot so far. He is playing good hockey and he is being physical. I hope that he is able to keep up. I can't wait to see him with the rest of our top D men back on the ice.

who do you think he will be paired with?

Who's Brad Stuart? :P

He's a defenseman we got from LA at the trade deadline for a 2nd and a 4th. We tried to get him for a 2nd, a 4th and Sammy, but the Kings were too tough at the negotiation table.

Anyway, I like him. He seems to fit well with Kronner, so I hope when Lids is back that they will have Kronner/Stuart as the 3-4 pair.

The only negative thing in all of this is it means that we have too many d-men that I like and someone will have to sit. That's a beautiful problem.

I do hope that if he keeps playing well that he will re-sign with us, but I won't hold my breath.

I like him. I hope we can reach a nice, good deal with him. Samuelsson's contract ends this year... hopefully we don't reach an agreement and find another player + Stuart.
Samuelsson has another year left on his contract.

Wasn't Stuart a former 1st rounder?

3rd overall in 98 i believe. he was the center piece of the deal that went to boston for thornton.
