Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 (edited) While talking about the San Jose Sharks, Bowman complimented Brian Campbell saying he was a special player and somebody is going to sign this kid and he will be good for them. He said this with a wry smile on his face and Ron MacLean immediately picked up on this. "Maybe Detroit?" Ron MacLean asked. Bowman bowed his head and adverted his eyes as if to try and hide the pair of aces in his poker hand.... Did Bowman just reveal something? Would they actually consider going after him?? It doesn't seem to make too much sense, but do you think Holland would actually do that? I am trying to find a video online of it, but it just happened. Also they covered Detroit very shortly and Bowman likes their chances. Edited April 8, 2008 by Majsheppard
Rice 42 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 It doesn't make much sense from a financial standpoint, but there were rumors out of Buffalo that the Wings had a deal in place for Campbell at the deadline. I think the rumored deal was Kronwall for Campbell and Stafford. I just don't see how the Wings could fit in another $5+ million defenseman. He'd be redundant here...Stuart at least brings a physical element.
Redwingsfan18 1 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 Eh..we could spend on Campbell, then have Ericson (sp?) with Chelios for cheap. Could work.
norrisnick 1 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Campbell? Kenny forgoing a 2nd line and having all the secondary scoring come from the blueline? Those four were just barely outscored by Pavel, Z, and Homer.
Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted April 8, 2008 Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Campbell? Kenny forgoing a 2nd line and having all the secondary scoring come from the blueline? With that top 4 we could put Belfour in net and still win the cup...

I like the idea of that, especially since in our system we don't seem to have any sureshot top 6 players, it's mostly role players like Helm and Abdelkader. irishtemper14+25 11 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 maybe if cambell took a discount....that would be sweet, i would give up havin pain train/ stuart for cambell man i wish there was no salary cap lids-raf kron-cambell stuart-chel ridiculous and thus wont happen
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 I really do think that Stuart has the same potential that Campbell has. I of course don't see this as something likelly. There really are so many options and it is intresting to think about it. However I am in the opinion that you should have 3-4 puck moving defensemen. If they want Stuart that would give us 4. It was a very funny scene though and worth a disscussion.
Redwingsfan18 1 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 Could you imagine a blue line of the following? Lidstrom Rafalski Kronner Stuart Campbell Ericsson Mess with that how you will...but I'm salivating thinking about it haha too bad it won't happen
12Newf 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 yeah seriously i really cant imagine there being anything there. it just doesnt make sense like having a guy like kronwall, campbell or stuart as a 3rd pair is just ridiculous. i cant imagine another 5.5-6m defenseman here. Zion 93 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 You guys seem to forget that Soupy is rooming with his buddy Joe Thornton right now. He is VERY happy to be out of this mess here in Buffalo, and if the Sharks go deep, I think he, like Jumbo, will take a discount to stay on a winning team. Would I like to see him in Detroit. Holy f*** YES!!!
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 If we could get him a good price, you dont pass it up. Lidstrom, Rafalski, Campbell, Kronwall would be the best top 4 in the NHL. Imagine then if you re-sign Brad Stuart, and Chelios. That top 6 would be sick. Probably wont ever happen, but dream folks, dream.

imisssergei 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 Here is what I'd do if the opportunity to sign Campbell came about. Sign him to a 7 year deal, $5-$7 per. Trade Kronwall for a young, affordable second liner player with a decent scoring touch. Possible to L.A. for O'Sullivan.

Trade Kronwall for a young, affordable second liner player with a decent scoring touch. Possible to L.A. for O'Sullivan. Why are we spending $5-7m for a guy who is older than Kronwall and no better? Why not use $4m to acquire the second liner, and save some major cash?
omnipotent_hudler 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) Let's remember that Bowman has a long and storied history of saying things and doing completely opposite things. He honestly just likes to mess around with people I think, so I wouldn't put much stock in this at all. Edited April 9, 2008 by omnipotent_hudler
Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 I saw the show too and thought it would be great if we got him but seems very unlikely. I would imagine if he takes a discount it will be to stay with San Jose (nothing to really back that up but he is playing great there and really likes Thornton). Nev 1,085 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 If we get Campbell it will be instead of Stuart - its well known his wife is from California and he wants to stay on the West Coast, and to have FIVE top D-men is just stupid.
StaticWithABeat 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 The Wings have better things to spend $6 million+ on, such as anything but more high-priced offensive defensemen.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 D-men are not a problem with Wings. it's scoring. we need quality reinforcements to our 2nd line. someone big, skilled and smart. I can live without Campbell if the money was spent well for some skilled forward with good team spirit and leadership
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 We don't need Campbell, I would rather keep Stuart. Kronwall - Stuart is better than Kronwall - Campbell.

rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 Maybe the reason Bowman was looking so sheepish was because he's about to take over as head honch for the Maple Leafs, and they are going to sign Campbell
imisssergei 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2008 Why are we spending $5-7m for a guy who is older than Kronwall and no better? Why not use $4m to acquire the second liner, and save some major cash? Stats prove Campbell is more effective. He isn't much older, a little over a year. And he can stay healthy. If fact, he played 83 games this year, Kronwall has never been able to play 70 games in the NHL. Regardless, it will take between $5-$7 to get Campbell no matter who it is that signs him.
