wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Jim Hughson for sure, you gotta love the "Great Save (insert goalie last name)!" Yeah 99.9 of the time it's great save Luongo, and it's usually just a dump in on net

zombiewing 3 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Henrik Zetterberg and 1st round pick for Richard Simmons wow, forget Avery, that guy would be instigating. Imagine having him in front of your net in leg warmers and tights.... bad thoughts, man, bad thoughts
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I thought I was in the minority but I miss Gary Thorne and Clement. They were the playoffs to me. They made every game feel huge, and some people hated them, but they were the voice of so many great moments in my Wings childhood, I just loved them. I like Sam Rosen on MSG, I like Rick Jeannerette, and Doc is alright.
aflac9262 211 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 Chris Cuthbert is my favorite. He works for TSN now, but I enjoyed listening to him when he was on CBC.

datsyukonethree 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I would have to say that other than Ken & Mickey, my favorite commentator duos in the NHL are Paul Steigerwald (sp?) & Bob Errey (yes, THAT Bob Errey) in Pittsburgh & then Dave Strader & Darren Pang in Phoenix. I'm sorry, but Steigerwald and Errey are the absolute worst announcers I have EVER heard. I go to college in Pittsburgh, and my housemates and I just want to break down and cry whenever the best hockey game on is a FSN Penguins game. Those guys, in addition to being mind-numbingly boring to listen to, think that the NHL begins and ends with the Penguins, that Crosby, Malkin, and Therien can do no harm, and that Ryan Malone is the second coming of the messiah. Listening to them rave all game, I have to wonder if Mrs. Errey ever gets angry or jealous when Bob accidentally calls her "Sidney" in bed. It's that disturbing. Hall of Fame: Thorne/Clement, Daniels/Redmond, Beninati/Laughlin, and whoever the Dallas and Carolina guys are. Hall of Shame: Steigerwald/Errey, the Nashville Guys. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Gary Thorne is one of the absolute best. I miss him calling games on ESPN; he was great. Another really great broadcaster was former Penguins TV play-by-play man Mike Lange. Why in the world did FSN Pittsburgh let him go, especially for those two mindless drones they have now? Lange as great. He has some of the best expressions in all of sports, and nobody could match the excitement he brought to the game. Even when the Penguins were really bad, he'd make watching a game worth while. FSN Pittsburgh should never have let him go. I'm really glad that the Penguins picked him up on their radio broadcasting crew, because he does a really great job, and is one of the better broadcasters in the game. There are some other good guys as well; Sam Rosen on MSG is great. He has a great hockey voice, and has been the voice of the Rangers for such a long time. Some other good ones are Howie Rose, Dave Strader, John Vanbiesbrouck, Ralph Strangis, Daryl Reaugh, Jim Hughson, and of course, Panger. There are some others as well, but these guys really stick out as doing a great job. Of course, you can't forget the best of them all: Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond. Nobody else comes close, at least in my opinion. They do such a great job. Edited April 14, 2008 by Kp-Wings
webwing91 4 Report post Posted April 15, 2008 I grew up with Gary Thorne, and his voice and excitement is quite perfect and awesome. So overall I go for Thorne, Pang, and Clement. Brian Engblom not too bad. Phoenix guy is not too bad once you get used to him, used to hate listening to him back when Phx was good though. The wings radio team is the best though. Real1 2 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Sorry for bringing back this thread but, I was watching the Wings game on VS yesterday and noticed that Doc Emrick and Eddie Whatshisface were doing the game. I thought that they only do the games that are on NBC. Do they have contracts with the TV companies or the NHL? Or do they just get assigned to games like refs? NBC and Versus have a partnership to broadcast the games. I think Pierre is occasionally on Versus but I could be mistaken. I believe for the Conference Finals you'll see him "Behind the Glass" or whatever the heck they call it

McCartyFanForLife 17 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Great. I hope that this is not true. I hate that man with a passion. I think it would be awesome if HDTV gave us the ability to choose an announcer. Similar to Blue Ray movies, when you listen/see the director while watching a movie. For a hockey game, you can have 3 different sets of announcers and then you, the viewers, can choose who you want to broadcast the game. And of course you could switch if you wanted during the game. I think that would be awesome... but not anywhere close right now.... damn you Pierre
RedWingAbner 13 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I've been discussing this very thing with my wife for a long time. Emrick is terrible. He is obnoxious sounding and gets caught up in his own overused cliches. For instance, just count the number of times he says "waffleboarded away." His shrill voice annoys me too. Eddie "O" is just dense. Really Eddie, the Russian word for shoot is "Bretzi"? Thanks, seeing as you say it whenever a Russian scores a goal. That doesn't make you bilingual, just repetitive. Jones is OK. He takes himself too seriously and throws out simple stuff. I guess the thing that annoys me most about the Vs./NBC teams is their sheer joy if the Wings stumble. Listen to a broadcast-- it's never "The Wings are playing a great game," it's always, "Team B has to do this to win. They can do it, the Wings are doing this..." Bob Cole and Harry Neale any day, after Ken and Bingo-Bango.

I always opted for a FSN away game not in HD from HDnets game just because the announcers really annoyed me. Mickey and Kenny rule!!!

Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 Doc has such a nasal voice.. sometimes I fear my head will explode. And Penguin games- his Crosby love gets old very quickly. Emrick is a member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee, has served as Vice President of the NHL Broadcaster’s Association since 1985 and has been editor of the NHL Pronunciation Guide since 1982. He earned his bachelor’s degree in speech from Manchester College in 1968, a master’s degree in radio/television from Miami University in Ohio in 1969 and a doctorate in radio/television/film from Bowling Green State University in 1976, which earned him the nickname “Doc,” as he’s known to many of his fans. Born in LaFontaine, Ind., Emrick resides in Michigan with his wife, Joyce. You can get a doctorate for radio/tv.... odd. And for living in Michigan, why isn't he biased toward our Wings?? WhiteCloud 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2008 I am a big fan of Emrick myself. I like his enthusiasm and his style. His voice takes some getting used to but he does a ton of NJ & NY games so I have watched a bunch of games he has done. Others I really enjoy are Dave Strader & Chris Cuthbert.
