GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 The way Helm looked today, I can't believe this kid didn't play more this season. To me, there's no way in hell that he sits when Maltby returns. He was maybe our best player today. So to answer my own question, I think Sammy should sit for Maltby. The only player who's looked more useless offensively than Sammy is Cleary, and he works too hard out there to be benched. Also, Drake and McCarty have both brought a physical edge, and Hudler has been stellar to everyone's surprise. So that leaves Sammy out of the lineup in my mind for when Malts comes back. Do you guys agree?

Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 sit flip. lol Look, Helm had a great game today. But it's absolutely unreasonable to expect someone who's played a handful of NHL games to bring that every day in the playoffs. Helm is absolutely the future, but he's not the present. Malts takes Helm's/Hartigan's spot when he returns. But Sammy plays and he'll have better days in the future.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 sit flip. But he brings something to the table defensively. Sammy hasn't played poor, it's just that he looks foolish out there offensively. I know Babcock likes him, but the way Helm played today I'm beginning to question Babcock's decision making skills in not playing Helm earlier in the series or during the season. Could Kopecky or Hartigan have looked as good out there today as Helm? To me Maltby replaces Sammy by process of elimination, since everyone else serves a purpose. He did more today than Hartigan has done in his whole NHL career. You can't reward him by benching him when there's worse players who are dressed in the lineup. Barrie 900 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Helm will sit when Malts comes back. I'm not a big Sammy fan, but he has size, and takes a lot of shots. Sammy will be in there.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 (edited) I couldn't believe how many times Samuelsson turned over the puck today. Oh wait, yes I can Babcock said Helm was "fantastic" today. Since Maltby is a winger I can't see him taking Helm's spot so Samuelsson would be the logical choice, especially if Stuart's finger is 100% so he can take over on the 2nd PP. By the way: Gotta point out GMR's support of Hudler! Mark this date in history! Edited April 20, 2008 by WhiteLightning91
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 No. I don't want to give Sammy too much credit because he hasn't earned it yet, but I think he slowly is improving. Or you can at least say that over the course of the series he improved. He made quite a few great half-plays the last couple games and I guess you have to think/hope (depends on your perspective, I can't lie, I'm more on the hope end...) that he'll start finishing some of those plays and generating and setting up some goals. Besides, they play vastly different roles, like it or not. But hey, I'm just going to hope they work some of this stuff out in the next few days. Babcock and the guys know what they need to work on and they will. I expect to see a better team start the next round. They finally started to show some signs of swagger in Game 6. It'll continue. And I'd be more worried about Zetterberg.
Yemack 1 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 IMO Sammy should watch from press box. Helm in, Sammy OUT forever
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 I couldn't believe how many times Samuelsson turned over the puck today. Oh wait, yes I can Seriously. When Sammy did that damn spin-a-rama just inside the blue line and turned it over, and the announcer said "Sammy can't turn the puck over there" all I thought was "But that's all he can do..." Helm sits.

I want him to play well, because it helps our secondary scoring tremendously, especially since Hank and Homer haven't scored for a while now. My criticism of him was when he went into the tank the 2nd part of the season, and rightfully so. But he's definitely a threat now, and I can't believe that him and Draper are having great chemistry, since they're two completely different players.
12Newf 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 drake is finally playing the way we all want him too. the guy is throwing his body around like he used to and is crushing people left right and centre. sammy is a joke and like most people on LGW i cant believe he isnt a scratch for virtually anyone else. the guy hasnt done anything at all except miss open nets. cirov19 1 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Lol, if Sammy doesn't want to play better then yes. We can't keep having these turnovers in every section of the ice, especially against the more difficult teams we are going to be playing.
goblue169 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Please sit Sammy. I think he is terrible. The only thing he does it get poor shots. He turns the puck over way too much, and why the hell is he ever at the Point on the Power Play??? I don't care who is in, rather that Sammy is out!
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 20, 2008 Definitly. Of all guys on the team that don't have a role here, Samuelsson definitly fits that bill. I just hope Babcock doesn't take McCarty out of the lineup, especially after Babcock comes out publicly and says what a great leader McCarty has been so far, and how his play has improved every game. Not only is McCarty proving that he can help this team and not be a lieability, he's bringing that physical edge that is always important in the playoffs, something that Samuelsson does not do at all. Plus, McCarty has never missed a playoff game with the Red Wings in his entire career (that's while playing in Detroit, not counting last season in Calgary); I don't want to see that streak ended because he was scratched for a useless loser like Samuelsson that hasn't pulled his weight on this team all season. Helm has played great, and I hope they keep him in. He's fast, gritty, and did an excellent job setting up Hudler's goal today. Give this kid a spot on this team next season; he's really proving himself. So, with all this said, here are the lines I'd like to see when Maltby comes back: Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom Hudler - Franzen - Filppula Cleary - Draper - Maltby McCarty - Helm - Drake Scratch: Samuelsson, Hartigan, those Grand Rapids guys Looks good to me. Great combination of scoring and grit with that lineup. Make the right choice Babcock! Sit Samuelsson, play Helm and McCarty, and everything will be good! Malts takes Helm's/Hartigan's spot when he returns. But Sammy plays and he'll have better days in the future. with your logic, it only seems right that McCarty would sit. Regardless, it's going to be a hard decision. I wouldn't be surprised if McCarty is scratched. I love the dude, but Samuelsson has more to offer at this point. Same goes for Helm. The extra speed on the fourth line coming from Helm is awesome. On the bright side, this discussion could be a lot different. It's a breath of fresh air to be arguing over who should sit rather than who should make the lineup due to injuries.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Sammy has as many goals as Maltby so far in the playoffs, and one less goal than McCarty. There's no way either of those fan favorites sit for Sammy. If he's not scoring, which he isn't, what else does he bring to this team? It's funny watching him look foolish in the regular season, but in playoff time, I don't feel like laughing when he costs us a scoring chance or a turnover. WingMachine91 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 say babcock does sit helm, which alot of you are saying the most logical thing that will happen, then what do the lines look like. because i dont think we will have a forth line center
Copenhagen848 58 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I, for the life of me, cannot figure out what Babcock sees in him, or why he plays Sammy as much as he does and on the PP. He is so horrible and sucks so bad I literally want to throw the remote through the TV when he is on the ice. How many times did he turn the puck over today? In all honestly, I bet maybe 2 of his shifts today did he NOT turn the puck over. Sammy needs to sit...BADLY. Everyone says he's good defensively and has size. I've seen nothing in his game that supports those arguments. He is terrible, I can't wait until he is no longer a Red Wing. I've never disliked a Red Wing as much as him. KDDRWINGS1 9 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I really liked Helm today. I don't think Sammy should sit out for a guy with out his legs yet. Maltby won't be 100% until next year and the last thing we need is a guy his age playing 80-90%. I'd switch btwn him and Mac.

Especially from what I've seen the last 2-3 games. Are you serious? Honestly, I'm not trying to be a dick, but did you actually watch the game today? That was easily the worst game I've ever seen Sammy play as far as turnovers and puck movement goes. He turned the puck over nearly every time he touched the puck today. I'm sorry man.....I just can't believe you thought he played a good game today.
