JeeSpot82 10 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 He didn't go into cardiac arrest. He was injured during the game, and the pain got steadily worse before getting very bad in the locker room. The team doctor thought it was his spleen, and the two of them were driven to the hospital, where Sean Avery walked in under his own power. Not really as dire as NY Daily News has made it seem. Nevertheless, a very serious thing to happen to anyone, especially a man in his 20's - and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Multiple reports say he went unconscious and stopped breathing at some point. Just curious.
JeeSpot82 10 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) Where do you get that from? Multiple reports say he went unconscious and stopped breathing at some point. Just curious. Just read the article at the beginning of the post - never once does it mention loss of consciousness, halted breathing, or cardiac arrest. In addition: the TSN story (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=236340&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl) claims that he "never lost consciousness, never stopped breathing" and adds that the condition was "never life threatening." I'm curious where everyone else is getting the bogus details. EDIT: In finding older reports by the NY Daily News (good reporting, guys!), I see the cardiac arrest quotes. The New York media likes to do that - claim unsubstantiated hearsay as fact and publish the hell out of it. Edited April 30, 2008 by JeeSpot82
RainingBlood 8 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 The toxins released from the spleen would do it. It's like being poisoned internally. Try to think of it as a poisonous spider bite or snake bite. The toxins released just shut the body down. Get well Avery!!! It happened to my friend but his gulbladder ruptured and the toxins caused him to go inot cardiac arrest, he wasnt soo lucky as he passed away from it. I hope sean gets better. Kronwall55 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 wow, was shocked to see this. I've always like Avery...he's such a bonehead. Really though I've met him a couple times and he was actually very sweet to us. My daughter was very shy with him but he told her not to be afraid of him and talked to her for a bit. Hope he'll be alright. My thoughts are with him.

Still scary none the less, if it had went undetected for another half hour or so, then it would have become very life threatening, but I'm glad that there was no worry from either end! Maybe, while doctors are working on him, they can give him a new spine, while they're at it.

Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 A ruptured spleen is a scary thing. Good thing the team doctors were right on top of it. Get well, Sean. This is not meant to pick on the OP but rather the "unconscious and not breathing" inaccuracy of the article: people in general should be very wary of the NY Daily News. Not as bad as the New York Post, but it definitely has a reputation for sensationalism. This is, after all, the paper that broke the Avery prostitution scandal and then saw fit to remind readers of this in an article about Avery's hospitalization. Namingway 146 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) I never liked him much as a hockey player but I gotta admit that he did help out the rangers beat the devs in the previous round. It was always fun watching him on ice because he stood out to me and always did the unexpected. Hope he'll be okay and back on the ice sooner than later. Best wishes to him and his family. Yzermania19 1 Report post Posted May 1, 2008 Maybe, while doctors are working on him, they can give him a new spine, while they're at it. You are, of course, assuming he had one in the first place... Anyway, the first report I saw earlier today said he suffered a cardiac arrest, too, and it was the New York Daily News. I should know better - that rag's on par with the National Enquirer for accuracy in reporting. Avery's spleen is lacerated, not ruptured. If it was ruptured he would probably have bled to death, or at least he wouldn't have been able to finish the game and probably require emergency surgery. My birth sister suffered a ruptured spleen in a car accident last fall. A lacerated spleen bleeds a lot, but usually doesn't require surgery - they monitor the bleeding and if it doesn't stop then they do surgery. But all indications are Avery won't need to have surgery and should be his old pesty self next fall. I wonder if this is going to eat into his Vogue internship time. I guess Anna Wintour will have to get her own coffee until Aves feels up to it. But in all seriousness, I hope he gets well soon, too. I mean, he's an idiot and a jerk and just an absolute asshat at times, but no one deserves anything like this.
