What should we do about Maltby?

Hmmmm tough. The only reason I would consider it would be that I don't think our PK has been great - the Avs PP was actually kind of effective against us (and they were pretty much not effective at anything else the whole series). Forget the 5 on 3, that's a gimme - but as pathetic as their team was playing, I would say it's one area where - if I HAD to find room for improvement - I would. Just dunno though, guess leave it to Babs to figure if Malts matches up better w the Stars....

put him on the D so Lijia dosnt play anymore.

Was chelios truly injured or did Babcock just rest him and give Lilja a game to keep him sharp for any future rounds Haven't heard anything on chelios's apparent injury in the press

Maltby probably plays if it's Dallas we might be more inclined to go McCarty if it's San Jose just because of contrasting styles of the opposition My 25 cents worth

Amongst all Wings on Thursday, only Lilja played a bad game... and he played a TERRIBLE!!! game.

His accolades in this series (he played in only two games):

Game one: Comes in, takes penalty, lets Smyth set up a goal from behind the net, takes another penalty.

Game four: Fails to cover his man, lets Avs score PP goal in 1st. Mishandles the puck several times. In the 3rd, mishandles puck, takes penalty catching the Avalanche player who picked it up. Avs score on a 5 on 3 soon after.

He was WORTHLESS.

It's not Lilja's fault that there's no fighting in the playoffs. That's the problem with dressing an enforcer like him on the roster, namely that he'll make some mistakes skillwise out there.

Anyway, how dare you criticize any of our boys when they're winning, Crymson? :P

Then again, perhaps he'd replace someone on the PK who is more valuable than he is.

We're scoring SHG. We don't do that with Maltby on the ice. Further, our PK is just fine as it is. Getting Maltby on it isn't worth replacing someone on a line that is clicking. It's not as if he's desperately needed. The drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

He sure as hell did in last years playoffs. Plus, he's one of the most agressive PKers on the points, most of Colorados PP goals came from tipped point shots, it couldnt hurt to have Maltby in.

He scored one SHG last year in the playoffs. We lost that game. Also, putting in Maltby means taking someone else out. All of our lines are gelling; we're winning; we shouldn't mess with that unless something goes wrong. As they say, don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Nice try there, champ. Try again.

Is there any way Cleary can replace Sammy on the 2nd line; sit Sammy in the press box; insert Maltby where Cleary was on the 3rd line

for f***'s sake, get over the sammy thing. Half of you just talk s*** about him because other people do the same. He has been playing good in these playoffs and works his ass off every night. He's a much better player than maltby all around.

I totally agree with you there. Sammy has been great in the series vs Colorado, and has been playing very well with Franzen and Flip. He is even starting to look good on the point of our 2nd PP unit.

I say we will certainly see Maltby soon, and unless someones play really drops, it will probably be Helm he replaces. Helm has been great, no doubt, but the Conf. finals is gonna be much more of a battle than the first 2 rounds have been and Maltby's experience will be needed. It's not like he won't have much time to practice with whatever line anyway.

No, because everybody is doing good in the current roster right now, even Samuelsson. The Flipper-Mule-Sammy line has been probably the best line out there and, as hard as it is to fathom for many who have weird dreams ripping on their favorite whipping boys, Samuelsson is out-producing "secondary scorers" in Filppula and Cleary, and even a "top-line scorer" in Holmstrom.

7 points in 10 games from a "secondary scorer" in the playoffs where the games count most important is getting the job done pretty good.

It shouldn't matter how he gets those goals or points. A point is a point is a point, and if people counter to me that he's getting his points off long shots for rebounds or whatever else, you are seriously reaching way too deep in the cookie jar for excuses to dislike the guy. He's not my favorite but the point you'd be missing is that he's creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, even though Franzen largely been a one-man wrecking crew out there, others have contributed as well.

Unless somebody gets injured and as much as I like Maltby and some people in here hate Samuelsson, you don't change what has been working during a 6 game winning streak, with 2 of those games where you just completely take your opponents to school on the offensive aspect of the game.

I think that is the key. When the Wings are clicking they are unbeatable. I say don't mess with a good thing. Tweaks can be made easily if they are needed. Let's see what Babs thinks. This has been a civil thread for the most part, considering the topic. I am impressed.

Whatever you say all mighty Crymson. It's been a while since you've told anybody how to act around here, so I just thought I'd remind you that we're all still listening, boss.

But SWF...

Sammy is lazy and sucks, while Flipper and Cleary are all-stars. Just ask LGW.

Should McCarty REALLY be playing over Maltby?

McCarty offers more offensive upside than Maltby.

I like the guy, but I think he's easily replaceable these days.

I think Maltby should be in over Mac. I love Mac, but Malts is better. He's faster and more reliably defensively. The only thing McCarty does that he doesn't is fight and that doesn't do a whole lot of good. Besides, it's not fair to Maltby to have to sit out after being in there for the whole season.

I totally hear where you're coming from with the last sentance. If Malts hadn't been injured, we wouldn't be having this discussion. He'd be in. Period.

Unfortunately, fair doesn't count for a hill of beans in the playoffs. Ride the hot horse. Don't fix what ain't broke. All that. If the guys we have in there right now are getting it done, they stay. They are gelling well, and you just don't mess with chemistry at this point in the year.

I love Malts, and I do think he would be an asset for the team if he was in there right now, but I honestly can't say "pull this guy" without disrupting someone's chemistry.

Hopefully there will be no injuries, but if there are, I'm thrilled we have Malts to jump in.

But like you said, it just isn't fair that he was out there- and there were games where he shone brightly- and now he doesn't get to play. I hope that he does see some action for a game or two, preferably for reasons of resting someone rather than having someone injured. I do think he's earned that much.

See my response above ;)

See my response below.

Point 1: He has no control over who he plays, whether it is the Avalanche, the Predators, the District-5 Ducks, or whomever else.

Point 2: Until you or other people who obsessively hate him show me otherwise, you are still missing the point as well that, no matter how much you and other people dislike the guy, HE IS CONTRIBUTING (IN A POSITIVE FASHION). I know it is a tough pill to swallow.

I know we all have our people we like to hate, but some of you are beyond being ridiculous with the disliking towards the guy. He's been producing enough as a "secondary scorer" like we all want and doing it when it matters most in the postseason.

Seriously, what more do some of you want Samuelsson to do while he's here? And you can't use the default answers of "I want Samuelsson off the team." or "I want him to shoot less."

1st off - I don't hate/dislike (take your pick) Samuelsson, nor am I obsessing

2nd - of course I'm aware of the fact that he doesn't choose the opponent - it's a moot point...IMO he rode in on The Mule's 'coat tails' throughout the Avs series; Sammy looked outta place against the Preds like he had throughout most the reg season...I don't expect much from Sammy when the Wings take on a much tougher Dallas, & it's the reason why I'd rather see Cleary on the 2nd line in Samuelsson's place.

So, there is no way he takes confidence from the Avs series, and scoring in the post season now comes with * based on who or what shape the team your facing is in? Really. So last year when the wings lost to ANA were you on here claiming that injuries were the factor, or were you one of the people who thought that the Ducks were just that much better because they were physical?

And you want move Cleary, while offensively I see moving Cleary could turn out to be a 6-7 goal score on the 2nd line, or he could screw up the chemistry that line has and now Franzen goes from being a force to being lost because he has no flow with his linemates, and then:

The Stars 2nd line goes off, the first will more likely be up against ZDH, because you just broke up the best defensive line the team has.

But no, it is a great idea to take a team that just swept the Avs (hurt or not there are no excuses in the post season) winning the final game 8-2 and re tool the line up, that is what all successful coaches do in hockey, when your forward lines begin to click you change them up that way they stay on their toes and.... oh screw it I can't keep up the charade, you don't change your lines right now. If you wanted to move Sammy in the 1st round that was when you do it, not now!!!

You don't move Cleary off of the Draper Drake line right now, defensively they are on fire, Drake is hitting everything that moves, Draper is forechecking and leading that line like he and Drake are both 25 again! Cleary fits in great with those guys.

Next you are going to tell me the wings should break up ZDH because homer isn't putting up numbers!

Don't mess with the current lines. The chemistry with the lines is great right now and shouldn't be disrupted. Helm brings more speed and Mac brings the grit and greasy style of play that Babs likes. Sorry Malts, but just like Dom you should be watching game 1.

FYI, when they became the Ducks the District-5 was strictly dropped. I can't stress this enough how important that name change was to Gordon's club.

Well, that and adding Fulton Reed to the mix.

1) I'm a firm believer that we lost to the Ducks last spring based on the fact that the Wings didn't score enough while on the pp...Injuries did take their toll as well, but ultimately it was a lack of production on our pp.

2) Sure - Sammy might feed off this series against the Avs, but I wouldn't hold my breath...I'm all for putting our best players out on the ice for our top 2 lines - Sammy just isn't 1 of them...Maltby (if he's able/ready) could replace Cleary on the 3rd line with Draper/Drake; they're familiar with each other, & I'm certain that 3rd line would continue to provide solid physical play along with the ability of shutting down some of the offensive minded Stars.

3) Won't argue the fact that Cleary is fitting in well with Draper/Drake; Cleary though has more to offer offensively, & would benefit playing alongside with Franzen/Filppula; isn't the lack of scoring been a major concern for our 2nd line throughout the season? Wasn't Cleary getting into a groove just before his injury?...Me thinks against the Stars - Cleary could really stand out - both even strength, & on the 2nd pp unit; Sammy @ the blueline on the 2nd pp unit against a much better opponent like the Stars just scares the hell outta me!

4) Where does this then leave Samuelsson? Probably on the 4th line with McCarty, & Hudler.

Replace Homer on the 1st line  .....Now you're just being silly

F.Michael,

Cool some of the questions were to get a grasp on where you are.

And believe it or not people were calling for Homer's demotion, so I had to check.

I agree the PP failed Det last year, horribly.

The problem with your changes is that they are all hopes, ifs, wishes. Instead what Babs has in front of him and in the lines he has put out there is a known. He knows that Flip, Mule, Sammy are the best line (energy not skill wise) on the ice nightly, allowing DZH to focus on D as well as O without having to carry the offense.

IMO, Sammy is out next year, and as I said above if you say move Sammy in the 1st round, no problem, my issue with moving him now is timing. He is producing, multiple times his fore checking has led to a Mule goal.

Now some on here refuse to credit him when he does something well, I have seen you on these boards for a while and don't think you are a closed minded poster, but your posts on this subject make you look/sound like a closed minded Sammy Hater!!

You can't give Mule credit for scoring 9 against Col and then in the next breath knock Sammy because his points came against Col!

Do you see how that can be perceived as hypocritical?

I agree and if the Sammy of the 1st round shows up in the WCF, then hook 'em, and it should be a short leash, because if he is making a ton of mistakes and costs Mule his momentum/zone/streak that would be very costly to the wings.

If the wings become a one line team they are screwed, the same can be said for any team though, in the post season!
