GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 What are your guys' thoughts on Zubov? I've never thought he was that great, and he proved me right in this series. It looked like he was in a coma the entire series, and is too passive out there by being afraid to shoot. Maybe it's just the fact that he always struggles against us, but I've never been too impressed with this guy. Any thoughts?
CrossoverThrash 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 He has been playing injured so maybe that is a reason
heikks86 21 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 i think he was coming back from hernia surgery
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 He's a good defensman, I don't think he is overrated, simply because I don't think he's every really been rated as one of the best has he?
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 I'm not just basing it on what happened in this series, I've always felt this way about him and I know I'm not the only one. He just solidified my beliefs in this series, that's all. Besides, he seemed to play a lot of minutes, so I don't see why injuries should be used as an excuse. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 If he were on the Wings he'd be our second best D-man. But that hernia surgery can't have been comfortable to play with.
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Not as much as Turco!
RedArmy 4 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 he was sort of stars version of Lidstrom... He was very good when they won the cup, especially on the powerplay as the QB. He is no lidstrom, but stars were never wings either....
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 No he's not overrated. He's a solid D-man that gets the amount of credit he deserves. He's not a Lidstrom, but he's better than most Dmen in the league.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Zubov was coming off of surgery and an injured foot, and hadn't played for several weeks just prior to the playoffs. He got better and better as the series' went on. I am a big fan of his, so I am biased... but no, he is not over-rated. If anything, it's the opposite. Have a nice summer, Zubie. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Zubov is one of the five best defensemen in the league pretty consistently. So no, he's not overrated.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Well, if he's not overrated, he's never scared me much compared to other top defensemen like Pronger, Nidermayer, or MacInnis when he was still playing. Zubov is just too passive on the point, and isn't very good in his own zone. He's a great passer and playmaker, but not the complete package.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 He's the Russian version of Schneider. He's the opposite of Schneider, because Schneider is not afraid to shoot.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 No, if anything he's under-rated. His biggest problem is that he doesn't shoot enough.

CloudConnected 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Hatcher's best years happened when Zubov was his partner bailing him out. I would say Zubov is top ten dmen in his generation, top fifteen at least. He was coming off injuries this series and he is getting older. What you saw of him this series isn't indicative of his entire career.

Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Sergei Zubov is one of the most underrated defenseman in the NHL history. He is not that far behind Lidstrom, when healthy.
interminded 1 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 H'es not overrated, he's not underrated. He's kinda like Rafalski: a quiet, steady defenseman who his a force in the NHL for years and years now without being overly in the spotlight.
Opie 308 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 I think the biggest problem with Zubov is his partner, when he was great (before his technical prime) he had guys like Matvichuk, Hatcher with him. He has developed into one of the best defenders in the game, one of the best PP qb's in the game, yet he has not had a decent partner in years. Listen Lids is great, but you put a guy like ralf on his other side and he becomes even better, the difference between Lids and Zubov, if you put Lilja next to lids he is still all world, Lilja next to Zubov and his game suffers, he is IMO a offensive defenseman, and if you put a defensive liability on his line he doesn't have another defensive gear to go to, thus elevating his game. He is still a great D-man I am not saying that, but what separates him from the Lids, Neids of the world is their ability to do their job and half of the guy next to them's job! VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 I threw up a little thinking of a Lidstrom-Lilja pairing.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 (edited) If people consider him consistently among the top 5 in the league, then yes, I would say that is a bit overrated. I think the Rafalski or Schneider comparison is more accurate. Edited May 20, 2008 by haroldsnepsts
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 He looked horrendous these playoffs, I'd imagine he was playing injured. Zubov is usually a great defenceman.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 If people consider him consistently among the top 5 in the league, then yes, I would say that is overrated. I think the Rafalski or Schneider comparison is more accurate. Who's been consistently better than Zubov? Lidstrom? Niedermayer? Pronger? That's pretty much the list of guys who have consistently been better than Zubov is yearly. And two of those guys weren't better than him this year.
