Anyone else interested in the Jackets' offseason?

Maybe it's because I go to school at Bowling Green State University, but a bunch of my buddies are BJ fans (hehe) and I can't help but be interested in their situation. New GM, and loads of cap room, it looks like the BJs could become a legit contender this season.

Edit: I might just be bored and wanting to see some deals go down, and the Bjs will be wheelin and dealin this offseason.

Here's some potential moves I see the Jackets making.

Cap Room: 28 million

1) Re-sign Leclaire. 3 years 4 mil.

2) Re-sign Hainsey 2 year 6 mill.

3) Sign Malone to a 4 year 20 mil contract.

4) Sign Redden to a 3 year 18 mill contract. (must overpay to get Redden)

5) Trade Zherdev+ 1st round pick ( i think its 20th overall or something? Colorados pick) for Patrick Marleau.

I'm bored and felt like trying to improve another teams roster. A Malone, Marleau, Nash top line would be pretty sick though.

Interesting update on Malone...

Nick Kypreos was just on Fan590 in Toronto and stated Ryan Malone has been telling people that Columbus, along with Toronto is one of the teams he does not want to play for. Nick feels Columbus is just trying to show an effort to sign a player ~~ KuklasKorner

But I thought it was every players dream to don the Maple Leaf??

I think the BJs (My God what an awful Acronym for a team) are only going to get better this off-season. Not by a lot, but they were much better than usual this year. I think they've gone into real rebuilding mode now, instead of merely sucking every year and calling it rebuilding. Still won't make playoffs though.

I don't understand it. Malone has less than two weeks until to see how much NHL GMs will overpay for him (I think he's worth ~$3.5M, would pay $4), and the media is acting as if it's such a big deal to obtain his rights. So what if Columbus, Vancouver, etc. get his rights? If I were Malone, I think I could last more than a week and would have more than one team pull out the red carpet...

Why let the team that low-balled me on a contract determine where I go? (And probably get something decent in return for me...)

Not if I were Ryan Malone.

I have been a Blue Jackets fan for a couple years now, as I have visited Columbus often because of a friend and such, but I really like the city and think it is a good hockey market. I really want this team to finally have a good season. They really have so many holes that need to be filled, but I hope they don't start by giving Malone a ridiculous contract, and giving the Penguins a draft pick. They have Voracek coming up, who I think if makes the team this year could be in Calder contention with Stamkos. I'd expect at least a 50 pt season from him.

This team has drafted horribly in the past and the whole Maclean era was a disaster. They really just need to start over and take things one step at a time instead of making it a playoffs or bust type season. We should offer the Jackets some kind of Kopecky,Meech package for Brule, as I think he'd flourish here, and Meech would do very well there too.

One thing is for sure if Malone signs a bloated deal, I would really expect Franzen to sign at the same pay level as him.

I have to wonder if a lot of this hype regarding Malone and his potential salary is/isn't being fueled by his agent. Anything more than 3-3.25 million or so annually is a joke and even that seems high because he isn't going to have Crosby or Malkin feeding him.

Malones not a top line player. He's a good 2nd line power forward, but nothing more. I'd give him 3.5 at the max, if someone pays him 5-7 million there crazy.

The Jackets will make improvements this summer, but will not make the playoffs. They have no centermen capable of playing the top line, Brule had the potential but Columbus ruined him, which is a shame. If I were Rick Nash I'd want to get the hell out of Columbus, I dont think they'll be Stanley Cup material for at least 4 or 5 more years.

I opened this thread forgetting about Sergei's departure. I'm not too too interested with them, but a tad jealous that they are getting Malone. They could be good next year but I have been saying this since 05/06.

I am not that impressed with Malone, and the Pittsburgh fans have baked cookies and are ready to see him off... if that tells you anything.

Cleary is a better player, and I will argue that 'till I am blue in the face.

They are badly in need of centers, and I think, more than any other team, they have the money and the motivation (i.e. to stick it to a division rival) to throw a big-money offer sheet at Filpulla. It should be an interesting off-season for them, and for all of the other teams in our division.

what goes up must come down, those jackets better do something Rick Nash's contract is coming to an end after next season, who wants to play with a looser all your life? Rumour around here has it the leafs could build their team around a guy like him then again maybe you do play for a looser all your life.

The thing about the Jackets is, they have a great coach in Hitchcock and really they don't need to have a whole bunch of stars to succeed. He had them sniffing the playoffs with a really bad roster last year.

Unfortunately, they are going to have to overpay for some guys. They are - as previously mentioned - in dire need of a couple of centers. I think they pushed pretty hard for Richards at the deadline, but just couldn't put something together. Foote bailing on the team and demanding a trade put them in a really bad position at the deadline too. At that point, they just dumped what they could to get picks.

I am excited to see what Howson can do this Summer.

The Jackets are getting better. They've got a bright future and I don't think we've ever been able to say that. They do need to make some moves though, which will include overpaying for some players, but with the right moves they could be improving slightly this upcoming season. No playoff run, though, but they should be well positioned for the year after.

I really don't see them getting Marleau. I don't think they're going to be a playoff team until they get some secondary scoring.

Guys like Chimera and Vyborny could/should provide good secondary scoring if they actually play to their potential. Plus, Gilbert Brule has had a horrible NHL career thus far, this could be the season where he steps it up.
