sixer 37 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) Too much money in my opinion, but I'm sure he'll be great for Tampa. Pittsburgh will miss him. Crazy money upfront, watch him have a career ending injury after his 2nd year with Tampa! http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242037&...s=topStory_main Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone, who would have drawn considerable interest from around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent, will earn between $7 and $8 million in each of the first two years of the deal. Tampa Bay traded a third-round draft pick in 2009 to the Penguins in exchange for the exclusive negotiating rights to forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts on Saturday. On Sunday, the two sides got the deal done. Adding some intrigue to the story, last week the Lightning hired former Penguins' player Greg Malone as their head pro scout. Greg Malone is the father of Ryan. Edited June 30, 2008 by sixer

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted June 30, 2008 You know, I was sitting there telling myself after draft day and getting the rights that Tampa is suddenly a contender again, but I have this feeling that they're going to end up much worse than Pittsburgh, with a talent pool that can go into the playoffs but not finish it. This is really a stupid move for a slightly above average player.
Guest Dump-N-Thump Report post Posted June 30, 2008 as much as i like Malone, i can honestly say WHAT THE HIGGLEY WIGGLEYS IS TAMPA THINKING. but, are they front loading the contract to cover themselves later when/if a buyout needs to happen? or does that not how a buyout works? And more when Z gets his raise. And for the most part they're worthy - perhaps slightly inflated, but not by much really. To me, Kuba is the only real wackiness there. marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 I think it is a good signing actually. Sure the first 2 years looks really bad, but the contract only averages out to 4.5 million per year. Malone is only gonna continue to get better, I think, and by the time the first 2 years are over, it's gonna look like a great signing. Plus, this contract sets up the eventual extension for Stamkos up perfectly. It's just the first 2 years that makes it look bad.But it's kind of smart considering they have the cap space to burn as of right now, so why not pay as much of that contract the first couple years as they can. Which is about three years down the road in 2011 or so. By which time Kuba will be off the books, and St. Louis will be a UFA. So they'll have some flexibility for making a decision. And the cap will probably be $10 million higher by then.

marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 malone for 8 mil? over paid, hes great but c'mon now. the contract works out to 4.5 mil per year..... its a smart deal for tampa. they get the biggest chunk of the contract out of the way before they need the cap space to sign their upcoming players to extensions. nothing wrong with the deal at all. the guy is a warrior. he can score, has loads of grit, and the exact type of guy any team would love to have in the playoffs. 4.5 million per year is very reasonable. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 OVERPAID TO THE MAX. Even with the amount dropping off in future seasons it's too much for Malone. Like I just said in another post, this is why the league went into a lockout several years back. Too much money for guys who don't deserve as much. I wish the Wings had pursued Malone, but not at the price Tampa paid for him. They can have the guy for that much money if they want, but they better hope he's not a one-hit wonder like Penner turned out to be for Edmonton.
