LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 dmac will get a one way and downey will get a two way ...ugh! Why do you all have McCarty man love? Get over him, he's washed up, he's done, he's useless! Get over the cinderella story for pete's sake! It's not like he was any help at all in gettign us the Cup! Aaron Downey is by far the better person to fill the 13th forward position, he proved that last year and got snubbed in the playoffs. Luckily he played enough regular season games to get his on the Cup and what about McCarty? He comes in, plays a few games in the regular season, gives away a lot of pucks in the playoffs, ices it when he's not giving it away, then gets HIS name on the Cup! For What? Dude, sign McCarty to the Rapids contract, Downey is the far better player and fighter right now...

And you can't use nostalgia or the comeback stories as the default answers.

Mac was especially good in the first round against Nashville, and should be a little better with training camp and the regular season under his belt. Not a real impact player, but just as good (if not better) skill-wise, as Downey.
Dominator2005 558 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 Downey was more physical in one warm-up (during the playoff) than McCarty in all games that he played...
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Downey was more physical in one warm-up (during the playoff) than McCarty in all games that he played... Too true... For those interested, Downey has been offered a two-way deal. Same as McCarty. Link Apparantly we are going to carry 8 dmen, so there are only 13 forward spots. To me thats just retarded. Holland says in that interview he cant have all the "key ingredients"...well maybe if you got rid of some uneeded ingredients (like a dman) then you could have everything. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Downey was more physical in one warm-up (during the playoff) than McCarty in all games that he played... Again then, if this is the case then why was McCarty preferred over Downey by coaches and management during the playoffs?
Booster313 138 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Downey- 0 goals and 3 assists in 56 games, and even 0 +/-. McCarty- 0 goals and 1 assist in 3 games, plus 2 +/-. That would but Downey on pace for 4.5 points a season if he played all 82 games. McCarty by contrast would be on pace for 27 points. McCarty>Downey
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Downey provides more toughness and is a better fighter at this stage of his career. Mac is a better hockey player. Hopefully during the off season McCarty can continue to get back and shape and get stronger so he can be a little closer to the hitter and fighter he once was. I too hope that D-Mac can find his agressive form. I think that's what the two-way contract is about this season. The final reason that Mac edges out Downey is however is Mac sells tickets. Downey doesn't...at least not yet.

Do you think it really matters who is the better fighter? As long as McCarty throws down and gets a few shots in after his history with the wings it would give the same kind of emotional boost to the bench as downey pummeling someone. He may not be what he once was, but if we're going to be true and objective, he's a better player than Downey.
Zion 93 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 The only useful thing he did was crosscheck Kane like 5 times the last game of the year. Then I guess Lidstrom didn't have a partner on the top PK line, and you're not a ******* idiot. Oh wait...
MabusIncarnate 5,344 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 Fighting ability = zero contribution to the team. This isn't mutant league hockey (sega genesis reference) where the loser of the fight gets an extra penalty. It's irrelevant besides the sake of entertainment purposes. I'll take the better hockey player over the better fighter, regardless if they are both trying to fill the enforcer position.

I guess we'll see what a summer of conditioning will do, but he looked completely cooked in the couple playoff games he was in. Fortunately Babcock recognized "One of these things does not belong with the other"

maltbyrocks18 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2008 okay now i mean this being as respectful to the guy as possible but... how much drugs, booze, and bankruptcy did it take to actually make you FORGET how to skate??? i mean .... has anyone else noticed this??? he skates with his weight on his heels like hes used to roller blades... they taught me in mini mite hockey not to skate like your "tossing hay" ... and he swings his stick left and right skating as if he was farmer jack him self. Not to mention he literally would skate in to sticks and feet (including his own) and fall down imediately..before mac left he knew how to skate.. infact in his prime he was really good... so... how much drugs did he take?
