History Repeats

There are six retired jerseys hanging from the rafters at JLA (plus two jersey numbers that aren't used, but have never been formally retired: Aurie, and Konstantinov). Five of those jerseys are from players who played together: Sawchuk, Delvecchio, Lindsay, Abel, and Howe. The sixth jersey went up thirty years later, Steve Yzerman's.

Interestingly, the next group of jerseys to be retired might also be from players who played together, starting with Steve Yzerman. Lidstrom is a no-brainer, and I don't want to jinx individuals now playing for the Wings, but it certainly appears that Datsyuk and Zetterberg (barring unforeseen circumstances) are heading in that direction.

One or both could sign elsewhere, but it certainly looks like the "teamates" idea is proving that history repeats itself.

Sorry for this silly little post, but this is what happens in the off-season.

Aurie was officially retired but un-retired by Illitch -- no one seems to know the reason why.

Did he un-retire it or is it retired and just not in the rafters?

I can't remember!

he unretired it, though it's not in circulation..

He actually made sure that all the books, hhof etc didn't list it as retired. I believe it's because he's not in the HHOF

also vladdie's 16 is not available, and no one has worn #2 since Fischer, though they'res not confirmation if it's available or not...

it's far to early to say if Z or Dats will be retired but considering that we've had 2 great era's on our history, to get 5 retired from the 1st and only Stevie and Lids from the 2nd would be a shame. Still you can't retire Homer, Drapes or Maltby's jersey because they're just not those guys...

Fischer also wore #8 for awhile, like when Hatcher was on our team.

If Feds hadn't of left his jersey would have certainly been retired.

Kronwall is the only other player (other than Dats and Z) who could potentially have their number retired. I know it's a long shot at this point, but he is still relatively young and has a lot of time to get better. He would have to snag a norris or two and lead the wings to a cup after Lids retires, but it could be done. He will most certainly be our number one defenseman at one point, so I sure hope that he continues to improve.

Is there no chance that Draper could have his number retired? He is a great leader, he skates like the wind, selke trophy winner, penalty killing specialist, no to mention the fact that he has been here forever. But I guess only 314 career points just isn't enough.

That's as good of a reason as any I have heard -- there really has never been a reason given and the family is pissed - and they never received a reason.

I think it is rather rotten, but admittedly one of the few slights against Illitch I can think of. How many players in the NHL have been unretired?

Bobby Hull's was unretired so Brett Hull could wear it in Phoenix. In a craptacular move Messier forced Vancouver to let him wear Wayne Maki's out of circulation #11 -- for comparison's sake, this would be worse than Hossa demanding Vladdie's #16, as Maki died of brain cancer at the age of 29, and like Vladdie, his number was unofficially retired.

Man it's great to hear people talking about the confusion of Aurie's number. I can't tell you how often I have read about that, or thought about it. The only logical thing to think of is the HHOF argument (him not being in the HHOF), but I still think that is a rather weak excuse, as Aurie should be in the HHOF (though now it is impossible due to the HHOF not letting people in from prior dates, oddly enough).

As for future numbers Lidstrom's 5 is a deadlock. Then I would say Osgood, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and a longshot Fedorov's are all possibilities.

On the Zetterberg/Datsyuk note... as long as they remain lifetime Wings, and continue their performance; I'd call it a no-brainer.

The Aurie thing is definitely bizzarre. Someone needs to get Ilitch drunk and force the confession out of him as to why he did what he did to unretire the number.

That shouldn't be too hard...did you catch his parade day interview???? :)

Your pretty much right on!

...what does a man have to do to get his number retired?

#15 all time in wins, 2 Stanley Cups as a starter, 1 as a back-up, 3 total! Lead the league in GAA regular season and playoffs, has a lifetime winning perentage better than Patrick Roy...

#2 ALL TIME winningest Detroit Red Wing Goaltender. #1 ALL TIME playoff Red Wings winning goaltender. WTF else has to happen?

...this is the lock AFTER #5 (unless Osgood hangs em up before Nick) #30 WILL HANG FROM THE RAFTERS! WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO BE DONE BY OSGOOD?

...#5 and #30 for sure, #13 and #40 if they stay and continue their torrid pace...

With the relationship that Osgood has with the organization and the city I would say he would have his number taken out of circulation, at the very least.

To tell the truth I'd love to see all the key red wings of the new era who helped to bring the team out of its 42 year long drought up there. the main ones from 1996 to 2008 up there

Dunno if its realistic cause dunno how much room is up there but I can dream cant i? :P

Only thing is this. Why in the name of God is Zetterberg and Datsyuk's names being mentioned ahead of # 96?

I can definitely make a case but I dont feel like it right now.

btw the way nothing against Dats and Zett - fine young men, both. In fact they are my second and third fave red wings.

it just annoys me no end though when ppl put the names of those two young men ahead of 96 who is a long time serving red wing longer even than Zett and Dats gave his whole career to the wings and has been an important part of the group that helped end the 42 year drought.

ok i would have to say I strongly disagree with that.

A case and a good one, can be made for both Ozzie and Holmer.

How so Homer? yes hes a long time serving member of the wings, but what has he done thats so spectacular?

Wow... that's disgusting. I'll say it right here, right now- I'm never eating Lays again.

Not a chance.

If you have to make a case for a player, they don't deserve it.

#5 is the only current "older" Red Wing that is going to get retired. If Fedorov stayed a Wing, he would be.

Way too early to tell with Zetterberg and Datsyuk.
