If they (do), they better pack a lunch, because I'm here for this team," Downey said. "They want to mess with Hank (Henrik Zetterberg), they want to mess with Pav (Datsyuk), they want to mess with Nick (Lidstrom), I'm here to protect investments. Like an insurance policy: In Aaron we trust." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "(Downey) knows his role, he's there to make sure nothing gets out of hand -- he and McCarty are there to (protect) our guys," Holland said. "But at the same time, are we prepared to let two defensemen go to keep that type of player?" Downey said he plans on expanding his role. "This summer I went back home and put my nose to the grindstone and dedicated an hour every day working on my skills," he said. "I plan on chipping in a few this year, contributing a few points. I plan on playing a fourth-line role where I'm going to be a force to be reckoned with, not just me but that line in general. Obviously, I'm going to stick up for my teammates, take care of business when needed, play a high-energy role, contribute huge body checks, but at the same time, our line's going to contribute, too, on the scoreboard." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Classic. DatsyukownzU13 1 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 How can you not love Downey. Even if you know he's not going to contribute offensively, which he probably won't, Downey has the best attitude a hockey player can have. If he could just learn to skate I would love him even more. puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 I *heart* Downey. Thought he was great when he played in Dallas, like him a lot more in Detroit. We need our role-players, alogn with the scoring and finesse.
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 He needs to work on being just as defensively responsible as well.
Opie 308 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 I have said it a bunch this offseason, but it bares repeating, Downey is the perfect fighter for this organization. He has the Red Wing team first philosophy, he doesn't fight unnecessary battles, when was the last time he dropped the gloves at the dot for no reason whatsoever! Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 Its good that he's tending to his weaknesses. It shows that he knows full and well where he's at right now, and that's only for the enforcer role. He also obviously knows that being just an enforcer on a team with cap issues isn't going to cut it, so he's going the extra mile to try to improve his offensive ability. Heck, if he can tie up a guy or knock a puck loose to create a scoring chance for someone else, I'd be happy with the progress and call it a day. By the way, Downey's getting a game winner this year

up2here 41 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 I hope he worked on his skating, thats the only issue I have with Downey. He seems to be a great teammate and a very hard worker.
dobbles 252 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 as someone who often rails against fighters in general, i do once again want to say how much i like downey as well. i really hope he has worked on being a better player. thats always been my personal objection, when teams have guys that can only fight. but if we can have both he and mccarty as players that can be the tough presence, but also still at least keep you honest on the ice with their skills, thats just another great dimension the team will have this year. downey is definitely a good guy to have around. Inultus 12 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 I love Downey and very much hope he comes back, however what's so hard about getting a skating coach and working on some drills? Everyone who can skate can become better and it's not his fighting he needs to work on. Hopefully that is what he did.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 Did anyone see this part of the article? Downey took the Cup back to his "a quaint, little farming community" of Shelburne, Ontario, where he signed more than 10,000 autographs from 4 p.m. to midnight without taking a break. wow. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 An enforcer is only useful if he's in the lineup. I can only see him being dressed if there are injuries to other players. Also, it'll be hard for him to repeat his surprising season last year, where I didn't see him lose a fight. I'm glad that he's ready to do the same dirty work again, since he looked like a guy that wasn't going to play anymore just a few seasons ago.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 This is the reason I got a Downey jersey last year. The guy has the attitude every hockey player should. I cant wait until he proves everyone wrong again and makes the team, as an everyday or so guy. BTW, it just shows his character and love for the fans that he would stay out till midnight to sign autographs. If you get a chance to meet Downey do it, he's a hilarious guy in person.
