Valtteri Filppula left after the first half of Sunday’s scrimmage after being hit from behind by Aaron Downey.

Filppula said his right thumb got jammed.

“I’ll rest now and see how it is tomorrow,” Filppula said. “I was scared because it jammed a little bit, but I don’t think it’s going to take too long. He was sorry about it – but that happens, it’s nobody’s fault.”

Filppula’s teammate, Kris Draper, didn’t see it that way: He yelled at Downey from the bench. Before leaving Centre Centre Ice Downey called Draper aside and the two hashed things out.

“He feels really bad about it,” Draper said. “It’s over and done with and you move on. But from where I was sitting on the bench it looked like it was from behind and I just didn’t think that it was necessary. It looked like it was pretty worse. I’m not sure how long he is going to miss.”

Downey, who is in a tight battle to make the Detroit roster, apologized to Filppula for the hit, and the two shared a hug.

“It was just one of those things where the puck was rolling and Fill went in and I didn’t expect to see the numbers,” Downey said. “I seen his numbers and I felt terribly bad. It’s one of those things – it was a fluky thing, and hopefully everything is going to be fine.”

Man, if Sammy had done it, LGWers would be throwing bricks through his house's windows and leaving bags of flaming s*** on his doorstep.

Anyhow, here's to a speedy recovery.

Actually, he doesn't seem to be listed in the Detroit phone books anywhere. Any ideas? :D

just a jammed thumb? DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT! My feelings went from "I LOVE DOWNEY" to "MORON!" in record time when reading the thread title

Hand problems are bad for an offensive forward like flipper...

A jammed thumb? You're kidding me right? A jammed thumb. No hand problems are going to occur with a jammed thumb.

Yea, there goes his shot and stick-handling abilities, send him down to GR.

Yes, and if it were broken or Downey had bitten it off we'd have good cause to be concerned ... it's jammed. That's it. One step above a hangnail. No worries.

You're right. A jammed thumb. He's out for at least two months.

the problem here isnt the fact that hes hurt, its that downey decided to go for the hit in a training camp game, it makes no sense why he would risk hurting a team mate like that.

Well, food for thought (not to be a negative) is that they always say its not as bad as it really is.

It's training camp, the guy is fighting for a spot, and let's face it, he's not going to make the team with fancy stickhandling and wicked wristers. He's all hustle, sometimes accidents happen.

He was probably just trying to show he could be physical and contribute with something other than his fighting, and got a little ahead of himself.

Draper bitched him out, then settled things alright and Flipper forgave him.. things are alright, we thank our lucky stars and move on.

I mean, we could have Emery...

Let's just hope it really is a jammed thumb; you never know. I don't think he'd skip a practice over a normal hit, because they get hit all the time during the season and come off worse than a jammed thumb occasionally.
