So it is comparable to Pronger's 8th violent suspension in which he stomped on a prone player with the blade of his skate. Awesome. Avery is lucky he did not also stick his tongue out at the camera or he would probably be out the whole season.
miller76 463 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 so the lague will hand out a 6-10 game suspension for referring to Dion Phaneuf getting his sloppy seconds? And guys are getting hit in the head and in the numbers causing injury, and they get 2-3 games? Well that makes absolutely perfect sense! nhl :battle:
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 I'll stress as I did in my other post or two regard this that if this was a first-time offender, almost anybody other than Avery, not much would be made of this probably. I'm not going to get all hell bent out of shape that he got so many games compared to Chris Pronger getting so little or Chris Simon getting so much. Things like this are always going to be hypocritical and political and if you think about these things too much, you are just going to give yourself heartburn. I like funny, I like entertainment to a certain degree, but you sometimes got to know when to shut up and when you are either going to be embarassing yourself or be a detriment. Avery has no clue how to do this most of the time. Is it silly that he get suspended for this type of material? Perhaps, but it is Sean Avery. This isn't the first time he has acted like an idiot, hence the suspension. He deserved every bit of this because of his idiotic personality at times and because his personality is a ticking timebomb. Hopefully he'll learn a lesson for the better through all of this. sdwingsfan71 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 Avery on Dion and Dating “I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada,” began Avery. “I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds." Sean Avery is the biggest pile in all of sports. Make me wish Plaxico Buress or T.O. played hockey. Think I could even respect those two more than him. I hated him when he played here and I hate him even worse now. I really wish that they would let Marty McSorley tomahawk his face to shut his ass up.

Not Avery's teammates who agreed, or the Stars coach/organization who said they'd have suspended him, or the Flames players who also agreed. Naw, f*** Bettman. Anyways, if Avery didn't call Phaneuf to apologize, and didn't even include him in his public apology, then there definitely should be no leniency whatsoever on the terms (i.e. time limit) of his departure from the NHL. He's a poor demonstration of what hockey and the NHL is about and should be treated no different than the Marty McSorley's of the game. A violent assault on a person should be treated the same as a known idiot saying something idiotic? In my opinion the NHL made itself look worse by calling attention to this situation by making such a huge deal out of it. Fine the guy and be done with it. SharkFan 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Lowest common denominator, harold..... Which restaurant sells more food? McDonalds, or Craft? Now....does that mean that the food at McDonalds is "better" than the food at Craft? Does it mean that the service is better? The atmosphere? Hell no. Ridiculous. What it means is that it's cheap, easily accessible, and caters to the lowest common denominator..... Those who are simply looking for "something", "anything" to eat, and don't really care that what they're eating is crap, made from crap ingredients, and "assembled", (I wouldn't even call it "cooked"), under crap conditions. Hey....some even take pride in the fact that they enjoy it. It's on TV, and there are catchy jingles, and attractive young people singin' "I'm lovin' it!" It's GOTTA be good. Right? Look at the GARBAGE that passes for the most "popular", the most viewed, shows on television these days. Same scenario. I can't believe ANYONE would watch this stuff....let alone MILLIONS. The collective IQ of this Nation has plummeted. It dips lower and lower with each episode of "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars", and with films, (films which USED TO BE based upon real literature), that are now based on VIDEO GAMES and COMIC BOOKS. Watch the movie "Idiocracy" for a magical look into our inevitable future. We are well on our way. ***Edit*** <ahem> Sorry. Not really sure where that came from, nor what it had to do with Sean Avery. Sorry, folks. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.... Well said. "Idiocracy" was such a threatening movie to the Republican party / conservative leaders that they lobbied Rupert Murdoch not to release it in theaters and he was more than happy to oblige even though his studio produced the movie. Every other major studio offered him a brinks truck for that movie and he wouldn't allow it to be shown. (similar to what they tried to do with F 9/11 until one company stepped up and got it out there) Not only is this scary censorship that has no business in America but it's telling that they don't want a movie out there that educates people about how stupid we've become. I spent 7 years in Washington DC and there are lobbyist there working with the RNC to dumb people down as much as humanly possible and they have 15 angles that are all working simultaneously. If you study no child left behind all it really does is force teachers to spend most of their time with the bottom 10% of the kids (who will still work at the mall for the rest of their lives) while ignoring the top 10% who could go onto to do bkg things like being responsible for science, technology or the creation of future jobs in the country. If a party picks Sarah Palin over Susan Collins you know who they are catering to. I'm originally from Indiana and I loved asking my buddies meant when they said john Kerry is a "flip flopper" One maybe 1 out of 30 people had a clue and it still made no sense because Kerry voted to authorize war and later voted against a whole different issue, the funding not being allocated towards troop supplies and gear. He didn't want no bid contracts going to Cheney companies like Halliburton for tasks they weren't qualified to perform. But naive people heard "flip flopper" a million times on TV and radio and repeated it like silly sheep. In other words......."Idiocracy" in real life. Yzerman191 37 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 I'm not sure if this was posted or not, but I read from a poster on another forum that Dave Tippett point-blank asked Avery if he was going to say anything during the interview that he shouldn't, and he said no. Tippett heard his comment and thought it was off-the-record until returning to their hotel room, and which point he saw it was all over the news and inferred that it was certainly premeditated. Again, I don't have a source for that. I just read it off another forum. But if true, that sure explains why the Stars are reacting in such a firm manner. Mark Spector's column on Sportsnet.ca has Tippett's quotes. He said he asked Avery if he was going to say anything to the media, Avery responded "No." He then told the team public relations people the same thing, and then a few minutes later called the cameras over to deliver his statement. Not only that, but James Duthie at TSN reported that he spoke to a number of (nameless) Dallas Stars players, who said that moments before stepping up to the cameras, Avery turned to his teammates and said, "Watch this, boys." This Is Bida 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 Like I said way back, Bettman should've called the Stars owner directly and told him to make this a team matter. Have the team ower fine him or suspend him but make it A TEAM THING! If he gets any more than a single game it's just gonna make the NHL disciplinary people look like complete jokes. It's okay, we'll have Pronger damn near paralyze someone and only give him a game but we're gonna ban Avery 10 games for making a disrespectful comment. Ridiculous! The NHLPA should be all over this one. They should be going NUTS about how the NHL cares zero about the physical well being of their players. This just pisses me off. I'm getting so fired up about it. What ever happened to that hit on Dats by Pronger earlier in the season where Pronger threw an elbow in Dats' head? Oh, because he didn't get hurt the league wouldn't even LOOK at the tape. Seriously, this is why I say I hope Pronger gets injured to where he can never play again. Cause in the end I'd rather him be out of the league than an all-star type player. Real classy NHL!

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 I don't know if this has been brought up with the whole Avery drama, I've been so busy I've barely kept up with the whole act and haven't read this thread in depth, but in terms of this whole incident whether it sheds a bad light for the NHL, or how bad it does with public perception, for me personally I don't care about any of that. I don't care if the NHL got it "right" or "wrong" with the handling of this or the respect factor towards the league of public perception or my own personal perception of it. I like watching hockey, I like watching the NHL, neither is going away anytime soon, and I'm not going to stop watching it anytime soon. This hoopla doesn't change that one bit. The Secret 304 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 There are many ways to generate interest and attention, some are in good taste some are in bad taste. Avery has made it his job to generate as much attention as possible by doing all the wrong things. I think this suspension goes deeper then the dumb comments he made on camera about his ex'gf. I think its his overall conduct on and off the ice that warrants his being suspended. Good he is trying to make things more interesting, bad are his choices in how to do it. Grapes, Shanahan and Hull are vocal in what they say and are interesting characters that generate interest but they know, more or less, where the line is and never crossed it like Avery. It's not just the league that is sick of him but by the sound of the comments from coaches and players on his team, they are also sick of the distractions he brings with him. Ray Emery is no longer in the league in part because of the distraction he brought to the team for his antics on and off the ice... no one wanted that on their team. Chemistry is needed for a team to bond and work together and having a guy like Avery who is disrespectful, flamboyantly stupid and always trying to generate press probably doesn't work toward team bonding. To further that thought the Stars are struggling this year and need him to produce interest by what he can do on the ice for them and not in the media by trying to be a clown. Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 Sounds great! Wait,...where on the list is the NHL in terms of popularity in the US again? Oh yeah, the bottom. Next! esteef I expect better from you, esteef. That the NHL is at the bottom of the totem pole doesn't mean my ideas have any less weight and that incidents like this one are suddenly OK. If anything, it makes the latter even more deleterious than it otherwise would be (which was sort of my point in the first place). Hell, the trap is one of the reasons the league's at the bottom to begin with. So what are you saying? Not addressing the trap will surely help move the league from the bottom? Again: think, people. PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 SourceWings Weigh in on Avery Comments: "There's no room for that in hockey," said Chris Osgood "Guys say stuff on the ice, but guys who are veteran guys and have respect for the game, it belongs nowhere in sports. It has nothing to do with the game. More or less, it's an attention getter." "It's a degrading comment," Osgood said. "You can't say that about a girl, or women, and let boys think it's OK to say that about women, or anyone. It (the suspension) was the right move." "I know Sean," Kris Draper said. "The one thing I've always said about him is if he would just keep his mouth shut and play the game of hockey, he could be a very effective hockey player. But he doesn't do that." Babcock, who coached Avery in Cincinnati of the American Hockey League, said there is no place in the game for what Avery did. "I feel terrible for the young girl," he said. "It's flat-out unacceptable."Second thing I'd say, in life some people lose their way," Babcock said. "You've gotta be smart enough to know when you've lost your way." "We had a lot of veterans and he lived with (Brett) Hull at the time," Chelios said. "He was never a problem here. He said dumb things, but we had such a veteran team that a lot of guys like Mac (Darren McCarty) and Shanny (Brendan Shanahan) straightened him out if he stepped out of line." "I had him living at my house during the lockout when he was playing with the (UHL's Motor City) Mechanics and I had to kick him out after three weeks," Chelios said. "He turned my house upside down with the kids. It was funny, but after awhile . . . He's not a bad kid, but he has bad judgement some times." "They should've let him play first, that would've been something to see," Wings goalie Chris Osgood said. "He probably wouldn't have fought with Phaneuf, but he likely would've made the mistake of thinking he could've go with Jarome because they're closer in size. Jarome would've killed him. That guy is as strong as an ox."
Opie 308 Report post Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Ozzie letting Avery know what is what. The thing about Cheli having to kick him out really sends a message that this guy is an ass on or off of the ice! Didn't see this in the thread yet: linky majiggy When Turco says, “Well, hopefully he doesn’t back down, just show up like a man,” what he’s really saying is Avery has avoided physical confrontations – fights – in the past. When Turco shakes his head and says, “But we expect that out of him all year … the show continues,” he’s actually saying Avery is a jerk and will never change. OUCH!!!!!!!!! I think Aves was just trying to make himself feel better.... After all he was like Sloppy 20th for Elisha and probably sloppy 100ths for "Stacey's Mom" :EDIT: i was suspended myself too because well i called them even sloppier than seconds... ::EDIT:: but i appealed it because neither were my girlfriends at any point and i proved it to be a true statement Sucks for Aves, if only he wouldn't have lied about the actual numbers... he would be playing again!
