The National Hockey League announced Friday morning that Avery has been suspended for six games, without pay, retroactive to Tuesday’s game in Calgary, as a result of the comments he made Tuesday morning after the his team’s morning skate at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Avery also agreed to seek professional anger-management evaluation and, if necessary, structured counseling in light of his pattern of behavior, which the NHL has deemed unacceptable and antisocial behavior. JeeSpot82 10 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 Ludicrous. Absolutely ludicrous. There have been dirty hits that have ended seasons and careers that got fewer than six games. Yeah, he's a dick, but come on.
ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 (edited) Six Games For Avery Blog: KK Hockey By Paul 12/05/08 at 10:23 AM ET | Comments (0) from Dan Rosen of NHL.com, The verdict is in, and Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery will be sitting out a little while longer for the inappropriate comments he made earlier this week. Avery also agreed to seek professional anger-management evaluation and, if necessary, structured counseling in light of his pattern of behavior, which the NHL has deemed unacceptable and antisocial behavior. The question now is what the Stars will do. Honestly though, this whole thing feels soooo blown out of proportion. He said a crude and rude (but still funny) comment that has attracted a great deal of publicity to the NHL (and remember, theres no such thing as bad publicity. Marketing 101) and Bettman suspends him. Another great move by Bettman (cough ********cough). I've seen horrible, injury intended hits get far less then six games.....is this fair? While the NFL is dealing with players robbing, shooting, and beating and the MLB dealing with players shooting themselves up with god knows what, we have a player here who make an over the edge comment and now he is public enemy number 1. Then you got the Dallas organization completely using him as an excuse for the trouble the Stars are in this season. How lame is that. Watching Tippett speak out about how "his behavior reflects our organization and now we look bad because we were painted with a bad brush" is such a crock of s***. First off, NO ONE thinks Avery is the god damn Stars mascot, so for them to make the argument that now THEY looks bad because of him is utter nonsense. No one is going to think to themself, "wow, that Avery is quite the bad guy, that means that whole organization is like him". The fact of the matter is, the Stars needed an excuse, and now they have found one in Avery. Shame on Bettman, shame on the Stars. Yeah, he's a dick, but come on. Jones almost puts Bergeron in a hospital bed for life and gets 2 games. Sean Avery says dumb things and gets 6 games. The Wings just made sure Holmstrom never sits in front of a camera again.

Well, if it wasn't for John douchebag Keating egging Hommer on to talk about the unfair call on a play, we wouldn't have to worry.
egroen 384 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 Red Wings are furiously memorizing the scripts provided to them: Well, obviously _______ is a great player and you knew the ______ were going to come out motivated tonight. ______ set me up realy nice on that play. Things got a little chippy out there, but we just have to play through it. The refs have a tough job and are going to make those calls. I thought ______ played a really great game. Gary Bettman is not short at all. We have to give 100% effort out there for all 60 minutes.
Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 No, it's not. You think they just let her blog on nhl.com for the hell of it? They let her blog because she's a draw for the league. More than that, she's a stunningly attractive draw who genuinely loves the sport and who appeals to some of the key demographic groups the league is trying to win over. Saying Elisha Cuthbert is of absolutely no importance to the league is the very definition of provincial thinking. OMG! What are you thinking??????
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 Wow. 6 games?? I figured it'd be the couple games he's already missed and a healthy fine. I know the league is sick of this guy (as am I), but that is a little ridiculous. I still think this should've been left for the Dallas Stars to handle, maybe with the league putting their two cents in.

I still think this should've been left for the Dallas Stars to handle, maybe with the league putting their two cents in. One thing that is clear to me is the NHL needs to be able to fine players and coaches more than $2,500 (I had no idea initially they had such a tiny limit). That's just stupid and barely even a slap on the wrist. This suspension is essentially a fine for close to $300,000.

esteef 2,679 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 (edited) Personally, my opinion of the Stars is really going down through all this. I don't care how much of a dick Avery might be, he is a teamate and he is not the sole reason that team is suffering. They are completely throwing him under the bus and scapegoating him here. Turco and Modano are such whiney *******. Absolutely, don't make a mistake in the Dallas dressing room or they'll all skewer you behind your back in the media. f*** the Stars! I still hate Modano for not jumping on TooToo after he suckered Robidas. I DIDN"T FORGET MIKE YOU SPINELESS LITTLE *****! I feel better now. Anyway, if anyone should be defending Avery in the Dallas camp it should at least be Hull. I mean he brought him there for this exact reason, and how many stupid things did Hullie say in HIS career? Hull should be telling the planet to "lighten up Francis!" esteef Edited December 5, 2008 by esteef

Hull should be telling the planet to "lighten up Francis!" esteef That part I definitely agree with. The Stars are a frustrated team and it sounds like they have lockerroom problems bigger than Avery. I'm sure he was a major problem, but not the only one. But all that aside, Hull knew what he was getting when he brought him here. It's funny to read the quotes of his when he signed Avery, and now he's totally throwing him under the bus. I'm guessing part of that is Avery isn't performing like they hoped he would. He's always been a pretty good player with a lot of baggage. If he's not playing well, he's just a lot of baggage. Figures that the one battle the NHLPA wins in the cba negotiations is bad for the game. It essentially forces the NHL to dole out suspensions. If given the choice of: 1) A fine of $2,500 2) A one game suspension I think Avery deserved much closer to the one game suspension.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 I applaud whoever it was that said that Dallas is throwing Avery under the bus. Turco needs to shut his mouth and stop making excuses for his s***ty play this season. It's not Avery's fault that he can't stop a beach ball this season. Likewise, Madonna should stop blaming Avery, because it's not Avery's fault that Madonna has aged and is now past his prime. Their whole team are acting like a bunch of whiny ******* looking for excuses for why they suck. If they were such a tightly knit, veteran team, they would never let a guy like Avery destroy their team spirit singlehandedly. F**k the Stars and their excuses. Well honestly, I said Hull is throwing him under the bus. Because he seemed like the one who really wanted Avery and brought him here, and knew what he was getting. Now he's acting as if it's a surprise that Avery did something stupid. As for the rest of the Stars, I get the sense that a lot of them didn't want him here to begin with. but I could see getting fed up. The team is struggling, they get a win on the road and are headed to Calgary, then Avery adds this major distraction.

In my opinion, strong veteran teams can handle distractions like Avery, and that's something you often see in sports with the top teams that are used to winning. The Bulls had the same thing with Rodman, the Lakers had it with Kobe's trial, and the Giants have had it all year with Burress. Those teams were strong enough as a group to put those problems aside and still win. The Stars are acting like Avery is the sole reason for their disastrous season. If he has that kind of power over them, then they're a weak minded and overrated group of idiots who aren't good enough to overcome any adversity whatsoever. HenrikRules40 14 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 Am I selectively forgetful? I don't remember Avery being such a distraction in the winged wheel. Maybe I'm just a biased Wings fan. He seemed more "controlled" here. Maybe Kenny slipped him benzos in the gatorade.

That was before he started dating celebrities, and besides, we had a more veteran presence and a stronger minded team than these Dallas Stars who are looking to blame anyone for their troubles. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 I also think it's funny when a lot of people talk about Avery and this incident, they keep referring to him as a kid. He's a kid with problems. Or he's a good kid that made a mistake. He's a 28 year old man. Acting like a 12 year old doesn't make him one.

I've never been in the Red Wings locker room (cue dream sequence) but do veterans make that much of a difference? I'd think each team has their share of veterans that command respect. The Wings fan in me wants to say of course people like Stevie and Lids and Cheli and Bowman are so awe-inspiring that you wouldn't dare step out of line in their presence. My "objective" half feels like if the Dallas veterans wanted, they could control him.
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted December 5, 2008 Umm....Isn't sloppy seconds when a guy gets with a chick after another guy has already nailed her? So he's saying a part of her anatomy is sloppy? I think that's a little demeaning...no? But really, I mean I love sports, and this suspension wouldn't have happened in any other league. It would have been a highly talked about game on ESPN and added a little bit of drama into the hockey game. ESPN would have eaten it up, and it would have gotten the talking heads paying attention to our league a little bit. I like hockey the way it is, but exposure never hurts. Actually, sloppy seconds is gender neutral, A girl could say the exact same thing about a guy. I do not find the term misogynistic at all. I guess it's all in how you received the statement, but to me he was just trying to bring attention to himself and the game. Even if it is offensive, does it really deserve a suspension? I mean come on, way worse has been said than this over the history of the NHL.
