Why people hate the Wings

They hate us because we're beautiful. Oh wait, that was the Breck commercial. Nevermind.

They hate us because we win and win a lot. And have players that take pay cuts to stay with the team as long as possible. And have a great coaching and front office staff.

It is easy to hate a winner or a team that is usually good. Nothing more/less and it is nothing to get in a hissy fit about really.

And every team will get away with stuff or "cheating" when the fans of the opposing team says so. Every team cheats then more/less.

Not much to really see here or read in between the lines.

You'd be pissy too if another team was better than yours for 17 years.

That should read "You'd be pissy if another team had beaten your team every time they had ever met in a playoff series, even when your team had a 3-1 series lead."

I've hated "Americas Team" since they beat the Lions 5 - 0 in the playoffs in 1970 (field goal/safety). I don't really hate them but the few times we have beat them, it makes up for the rest of the Lions sucky seasons. Anyway they're just jealous. In one ear, out the other. I know that I'm a dedicated, loyal Wings fan and they can call me (us) azzholes all they want. We know it isn't true. Well at least the majority of us aren't :D

It is that simple. It makes me wonder how many despised Montreal in their 3 decade long dynasty.

What bothered me about that board, and many others, is that people come up with lame excuses for why to hate. In the process, they come across as complete asses while coming from a city who calls its football team "America's Team". Oh well, I guess that's all just part of the human psyche.

Well, the chances of these people - who have diehard allegiances to other teams - admitting that the Red Wings are consistently winners is slim to none.

Though, you did see some who said "I hate the Red Wings because we can't beat them".. which is probably more true than anything else.

Geez, it seems like some Wings fans around here even hate the Wings.

I think there are just some Wings fans (not going to point fingers or start giving names) who are far more in love with winning than they are with this team.

I like the way you put that. Sometimes I think people are too ready to misplace or sacrifice their loyalty on the altar of never ever losing.

Oh....I also like that the Wings are hated. We'll just keep winning and having the model franchise and lots of Cups and awesome uniforms, and they.....won't.

Haha, I don't mind that the Wings are hated. We'll continue getting Cups and trophies. I'm okay with that. :D

THE RED WING CONSPIRACY

hahahahahaha

Posted by Daniel @ 10:14 AM Thu, Jan 29, 2009

Why do I hate the Wings? Besides the fact that they're incredibly conceited and don't respect teams that are supposedly "lesser" than they are, they absolutely cheated to win the Cup last year.

I never had strong feelings either way about them before last years' playoffs, where they hooked and held on to sticks and kicked the puck back to a winger in order to "win" faceoffs, pinned people to the boards and held on to them repeatedly, mysteriously "fell" when they conveniently needed a power play, etc. You name it, they did it in order to "win".

I don't care what pundits or anyone else said- they cheated and got away with it. I'd initially thought that the refs were biased, but now I'm convinced that it's the old "well, they're a great defensive, puck possession team" thing and since they're OBVIOUSLY that, what they're doing must be legal. Of course, you could argue that if the rules were changed for the playoffs, other teams should have picked up on that and cheated right back...but that's not how real men play. Even Tippett, who NEVER complains about the other team cheating, alluded to that fact. And I'm defintiely not the only person to have seen it.

I really resent the fact that people seem to think that fans hate the Wings because of their success.

Not respecting other teams?

He's forgetting the fact that the Wings have never disrespected another team in any sort of interview. Ever. In fact, even when we cream someone, they're the first ones to say "We know they're a great team and they're going to come out faster and harder next time around."

We purposely skate away from fights to avoid conflict.. and some of our OWN fans cannot stand that from our team. But with a captain like Lidstrom - confrontational encounters isn't high on our priority list. If anything, the Wings are one of the MOST respectful teams and/or franchises in NHL history.

Illegal wins of face-offs?

Maybe he's also forgetting that everything he has listed in that paragraph are PERFECTLY LEGAL ways to win face-offs. As for "mysteriously" falling to get a power play - what player in this league doesn't dive to get penalties for the team? Is it honorable? Not all the time. Is it a Red Wings thing? HELL NO.

People DO hate the Wings because of their success. For him to say he hates the Wings because they got away with cheating is basically the same thing as saying he hates the Wings because they were successful. In his convoluted "I don't know a damn thing about hockey" mind, we had to cheat in order to be successful. If we weren't successful, this guy wouldn't have been pissed in the slightest.

Someone needs to tell him to pick up a hockey rule book before he continues posting and making himself look like the moronic jackass he really is.

Best Red Wing hater comments came after the lockout.

"The Wings cant buy their cups now since there is a cap" or " The Wings will be just an average team now there is a cap"

OOPS

I think it is partly success but...

the fact that when they go to see a game they see so many Wings jerseys and then get drowned out by "Let go Red Wings" chants at thier own stadium, then they really get hacked off when they realize that the people in the Wings jerseys are their co-workers, brothers, sisters, parents or spouse...

Goooooo Wings!

The thing that bugs me about these types of threads is that people start using inclusive pronouns, like "we" and "us."

I personally have never played for the Red Wings, therefore I don't count their achievements among my own.

I personally hate these types of comments.

If a sports team plays in your state, you can say "we" or "us". I also find it acceptable if you're just a fan. The team wouldn't be a team if it didn't have the fans.

What's the point of watching if you can't find ownership in your favorite team?

Let me ask you this, what did you yell when WE won the cup?

1) We have an owner who gives a s*** about his players...treats them with respect...makes sure they are happy.

2) Our management is top notch...and clever when it comes to negotiating with players and agents for new contracts.

3) Our scouts can find diamonds in the rough before anyone else even knows they're out there.

4) Players are begging to come here to play, and once they get here they don't want to leave.

5) Somehow, the concept of winning 4 Stanley Cups in 11 years has an effect on the jealousy factor of other teams/players/fans.

Face it, they hate us 'cause we're damned good.

agreed 100% haha

Us is perfectly acceptable to me as a fan--you've invested emotions, and more importantly, money into the team, why not? You're part of it. Maybe not as big of a part as Pavel Datsyuk, but still a part nonetheless.

No, what really gives me the redass is people saying "we" when we're winning and "they" when we're losing.

As far as the hating teams that win thing...I'm a Wings fan, so I'll have to go outside of hockey. I'm a Browns fan as well, and I can tell you that I don't hate the Pittsburgh Steelers. Why hate someone *just* because they kick your ass all the time? Are they supposed to quit trying just to give my team a chance once in a while? How about taking some accountability for not being on their level? If there are other reasons, fine, but hating a team just because they're good is stupid.

The Red Wings are the model franchise for ALL of sports not just hockey. We keep our prospects that we placed money into and trained, we create and atmosphere of winning and sportsmanship. The fact that other fans cant say that they respect us for what we have done, that we have cheated our way into a cup, and that i am turning 20 this spring and the winged wheel has only missed the playoffs once in my life time. '90

Grant us respect and then give us crap, or talk trash, or w.e. Hate us but give respect because the players, organization, and fans give it to everyone else also.

I might be disgusted by the attention Crosby gets but i know he deserves it.
