Schnieder to return?

Suprising number of people s***ting on Schneider considering the various clutch goals he scored, especially during a time when everyone HATED Lilja. 164 points in 231 games to be exact.

As for relying on Chelios for veteran depth, I wouldn't rely on him to do anything more than carry extra sticks out to the bench during the playoffs. He is DONE.

(This doesn't mean I think the Wings' will get Schneider back anyway)

The 2006 playoffs against Edmonton is a perfect example of who Schneider is. He was the biggest defensive bonehead that series, and yet he lead ALL Wings in points.

Scoring clutch goals means s*** when you're giving them right back.

I think Chelios has one more solid playoff push in him.

Schneider is NOT coming back. He adds nothign we don't already have.

Holland knows what he's doing and whoever he gets is going to add much needed heart and grit. We've got depth defensively, and by and large our lower guys have played well. We can't move any of our top 4 (and I'm not sure I'd want to, even with Kronner and Stuart having issues).

If we pick anyone, he's going to be cheap, he's going to have a mean streak, and he's going to be strong defensively.

I'm calling BS on this one entirely. Lidstrom is untouchable (duh), Rafalski is a 1m/yr cheaper Campbell, Kronwall is a beast at 3m/yr, Stuart has an NTC, Lilja has been solid.. and after that, we have Lebda, Meech, Chelios.

I was thinking about this back in October haha, didnt think it'd ever even get a rumor. I wouldnt mind it, Schnieder would help our PP. Lidstrom feeding him and him bombing em in. Even if that's the only time he got he'd be a plus, I dont see it happening though, but I was always a huge Schnieder fan, and we would've won the cup if he didnt get hurt in 07.

I liked Schneider as well, but he fills no role here. Offense is not our problem, goaltending and defense (particularly the PK).

We also lack heart.

So someone scour through their database of NHL players and if you find someone who fits the following mold:

Affordable

Excellent PKer

Lots of grit and heart

Probably a defenseman

And there you go. If we pick anyone up at the trade deadline I bet it'll be this player.

Is he something we need? Nope, but playing Lebda like 5on5 minutes, and playing with Nick on the PP, taking Sammy off it, wouldnt be such a bad thing IMO. But yeah, Holland will be looking a heart and soul guy, maybe a John Erksine and Chris Neil? Works for me.

They were talking about Schneider just this morning on xm. They said he is for sure going to be moved at the deadline. But there will be few takers for him and his salary. Montreal keeps coming up has final resting place! I guess we will see. Really can't see him returning to Detroit with that type of salary.

If his salary vs the cap can be negotiated into a very favourable circumstance, I would love to have Schneids back for a year or two.

We miss his rocket shot and a defence consisting of Lids, Raf, Kron and Schneids would be amazing.

OMG..... This is THE MOST ridiculous idea I have ever heard. I wouldn't want Schneider on this team even if he had a ZERO cap hit!!!! Did you forget that the Wings won ZILCH with him on the team? I was never so happy the day he signed with the Duckies! Talk about over-rated!

I was never a fan of Schnieder, as I always saw him as a player who was too willing to sacrifice the defensive position for a possible offensive opportunity. And I've seen this result in a goal against the Wings many times.

Oh I agree 100%. I'd be fine with him as the 4th guy that does 2nd powerplay with Kroner, but nothing more than that. Again, I don't think this is probable pickup, but it's interesting to discuss none-the-less.

Plus, don't you guys miss his creepily-super-white smile?

If I were to see a situation that would call for a trade that would bring in Mathieu Schneider, it would be something like this:

Brian Rafalski or Niklas Kronwall is injured close to the trade deadline to such a state that he may be out for the season. The Wings would be looking to replace that power-play quarterback if something like that happened. But that's not currently the situation.

Burnside is where this rumor comes from, so he might be looking at Brad Stuart on the injured list and trying to start a rumor. Scott Burnside has, IMHO, never been very good with rumors involving the Red Wings organization, so regardless of whether it's on Spector's site or not, it's crap.

He's still got more credibility than anyone else on the net when it comes to rumours, so I'll assume he understands this part well enough.

There's a difference between a rumour, retarded conjecture and a probably event. The first is something Spector posts, the second is something Ek posts and the last is what you seem to expect people will post. The last is also the least exciting thing to read in the morning while you're drinking your coffee.

Beyond that this wouldn't be believable with his salary, I wouldn't want Schneid back anyways. While he's got that cannon from the point, he's slow and fared worse defensively, something the Wings sorely lack and would only get worse by adding him. If anything I'd go for a stay at home defenseman who can punish people and pass the puck.

I don't see the sense in this. Schneider makes way too much money, even pro-rated, and even if it does work financially, it doesn't make any sense. If the Wings want veteran depth, they have it in Chelios, and in spades throughout the roster. If they want defensive depth in general, they have it in Lebda, Chelios, Meech, and Ericsson.

The only way Holland is "working the phones" for a defenseman is if it is to swap a substantial piece to the Wings puzzle. Our defensive dpeth in Lilja, Lebda, Meech, and even Chelios has not been the problem defensively. Its been the 2nd pairing and Rafalski on occasion, but mostly Kronwall and Stuart. Kronwall won't get traded, and it'll be hard to trade Stuart when hes injured.

The only thing that would make any sense in my mind would be something like a Stuart for Salei or O'Donnell swap, which wouldn't cost them much in the way of defensive capabilities and physicality with the way Stuart has been playing, and would alleviate cap constraints somewhat that would allow them to be bigger players at the deadline, and aid in retaining our forwards up front.

Sometimes I wonder what games you watch.....if you think Lebda and Meech and Chelios have been better than Stuart.....its not been long ago where Mr Kahn reported that Lebda is in danger of losing the 6th defenseman spot.

Stuart, Nick and Rafalski have been the 3 best. Lilja has been better, but Lebda has been brutal defensively, and Chelios does ok in spurts, but his age is showing in a bad way.

ESPN is not very reliable on NHL rumors period......Brad Stuart may be out for a good while, if he had ribs actually tear the cartilidge, along with compression fractures in his spine, its not out of the question for LTIR to graduate into OUT FOR SEASON

no we dont need him, end of story. for one thing hes getting paid way too much and like others have said we have other players in GR that would be better for depth and would be better because we dont have to pay near 6 million

Ugh... Rafalski has been an upgrade to Schneider in every possible way, I hope there is no truth to this rumor. Schneider is about the last thing this team needs. Give me another Lilja-type, if anything at all.

WOW how the tone has changed........ Right now Schneider is Public Enemy #1.. wasn't to long ago when he played here These were some of the posts i found I wonder why it has changed so much... remember that he hasn't played for the BEST of teams since leaving here

REMEMBER THESE!!!!!!

Thread: Matty Schneider, I knew I always liked him April 13 2007.

This is my rah, rah post to counter my poo-poo post earlier biggrin.gif

Wanted to give a special shout out to Schnides. I thought he played a heck of a game. Made some good keeps at the blueline. Played well defensively. Started the game on the right note by rubbing the hell out of that Flames player along the boards. Scored a goal. His shot was wicked on the PP. And he played his usual tenacious, stick heavy, surly game in his own zone for which he doesn't get enough credit for ever.

Great game by Schneider.

Same Thread Different Post:

I've always loved matty. great shot, can be very physical, and an awesome team leader.

Same Thread and yet a different post :

weird how our defensive seems to have improved a lot since Kronwall got injured...

i really rate Kronwall, but Lilja is looking really solid at the moment.

Schneider is awesome though, and he seems to play so much better when he's got a bit more freedom to pinch.

People can continue to hate on him all you want, Schneider was also our only defensemen during this time that didn't play like a complete ***** and was capable of playing with a chip on his shoulder (unlike Rafalski, Schneider was actually decent at throwing a few hits rather than just constantly receiving them).

No one seemed to mind when Schneider was decking Tootoo back when Nashville was relevant, still a popular video on youtube.

But again, seems pretty unlikely that he's coming back unless Holland has some plan to dump several players.

There is no need for Schneider at this point. I enjoyed his time with the team, but his salary and skillset are not really what the Wings need at this point.
