Doc Holiday

The best "insults" you've heard against the Wings

I remember the first time I heard someone refer to Chris Osgood as "Osbad." This was a while back - might have been my first year of Jr. High School - but young as I was, I still recognized an awful awful pun when I heard it. I told him he was dumb and we couldn't be friends anymore

Prior to Sunday's game, in my office: "Osgood is Detroit's weakest link", "He's a soft goaltender.", "He's not a playoff goalie"

This comment is from an article that was written right before or during the 1st playoff series, I can not remember exactly. This is why some people should not be taught to read, write, or arithmetic.

I never understood how "buying a championship" is an insult to an organization. Isn't the ultimate goal to win a championship? Wouldn't you want your team's management to do everything they can (within the league's rules) to get the best players? This makes no sense. Can you imagine Ken Holland saying "You know... we could go out and get the top players in the league and have a good chance for a cup. On second thought we better not because some neanderthal fans from opposing teams might accuse us of "buying a cup"."

So anyone who uses the "buying a cup" insult, would obviously prefer that their team remain bottom feeders because that would be way better than other team's fans having the perception that their team used all their available resources to build a championship team.

My response to that was always "I guess the Ilitches just want to win more than your owner."

Like the one above me said, most of the "best" insults come straight from here. From other teams' fans, it's mostly crapping on Detroit these days, with an occasional jab at empty seats/non-sellouts or the team being old.

Nashville always has the famed "Chelios is a sissy" chants. Well in a game last year, the chants start to rain down ago. A few seconds later, Chelios sends a rocket past Mason to put the Wings up 2-1.

Epic fail Preds....Epic Fail

I remember hearing about something from the mid-90s (didn't see it firsthand, but read it once) where we had the Russian 5 on the ice in St. Louis, and the Blues fans started chanting "USA! USA!" We scored right in the middle of the chant.

(insert player) is lazy and sucks :P

Seriously though, the worst insults of individual Wings players probably come from here unfortunately.

Ha, was going to type the same thing!!!!

How about "you guys can't even sell out your arena?"

That one is always hilarious. They see one empty seat and it's instantly ZOMG, YOU CAN'T EVEN SELL OUT THE ARENA.. HORRIBLEEEEEEE.

No. The JLA experienced an 11 year sell-out streak which ended in 2007. And even since that time, we've never fallen below #7 on that list.. usually placing higher in seats sold than the team the person using the insult is a fan of. In fact, I recently saw on the Ducks board talking about game 7.. saying we couldn't sell it out... even though it was announced on tv and radio that it was completely sold out.

I work in an office in the Loop, those are actual things I heard on Friday. The Hawks fans may have been regurgitating an article, but I wasn't. Granted the ones I know are not very good a processing information, then saying something about said process or information. They are, however, really good at spewing talking points they read or heard somewhere. So if they were repeating something from a Columbus newspaper that the Tribune dug up, I wouldn't be surpised.

Another quote from a manager in the office: "Osgood doesn't impress me, he's middle of the pack at best." "Really?" I asked, "So being a top ten goalie, lifetime, is middle of the pack? What does that make Khabibulin? Have you compared their numbers?" He stopped talking hockey at that point.

Ah, living in Chicago... They live and die by their sport teams and come unglued when they loose in about two seconds. Apparently all teams must live up to the 1985 Bears or the 1991 Bulls. Anything less is a catastrophe.

Hmmm...a Wings fan offering good tidings?

Fair enough. I accept your good cheer, but I, like a few others here, cannot return it.

Call me petty for holding grudges, but 2002 was not that long ago to this Canes fan.

After working really hard, and overcoming a good deal of adversity, the Canes managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time ever.

Well, we couldn't have that, now could we?

The League changed the rules between the 3rd and 4th rounds to curtail clutch-and-grab, defensive hockey.

Do I object to that kind of change? No, as long as it is done IN THE OFFSEASON.

What this did was make the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals a gift for the Red Wings in the most disgusting manner possible.

So forgive me if I am loathe to wish well the franchise that was responsible for ****ing the Canes out of their first Stanley Cup. It was further proof that a new CBA needed to be worked out, as the Red Wings bought and paid for that Cup, and many before it.

But times have changed. The Canes have thus far avenged themselves and their fans upon every single team that has ever eliminated them from playoff contention besides the Red Wings...and it looks like there is the possibility of a reckoning.

I went to Chicago a few years back to watch them play Detroit. for the last game of the regular season. We left after losing in OT to them and we got hackled, saying the usual, detroit sucks. What was funny was we were going to the playoffs and they were going to the golf courses. I made sure they knew that :)

I think deep down, they were just jealous.

Same thing happened to me, to which I responded"We'll see you in the playoffs then, wait....no we wont!"

Of course according to the hawks "fans" the playoffs dont matter.

I guess not being a part of them for so long they forgot.

Last year a Flyers fan said to me, "The Wings always choke in the playoffs." I countered with 3 Cups (now 4 of course) in 10 years and after a moment of thinking about that in relation to his pathetic drought he shut up. Even a Flyers fan could realize that was a stupid thing to say.

The Flyers are one of the biggest chokers in the League. All those years from 1995-2004 they lost in the Conference Finals. And their only trip to the Finals in that time we swept them.

I hate it when players like Iginla and Niedermayer say, "This team wouldn't be anything without Lidstrom." Like it's 'insert team' + Lidstrom = Stanley Cup. Also, 'Detroit Sucks' is really stupid but so much so that it is insulting.

That the Red Wings are a bandwagon franchise.... from a guy who loved the Pens and Crosby last semester... but is now suddenly a huge Blackhawks fan since they made the playoffs..... its cute...

I can understand the bandwagon argument, as much as I don't like it. Obviously, when you have a team whose been consistent winners for 11+ years, people are going to be interested.

By the same token though, making the bandwagon argument is dumb for this reason: There's really no way to tell. The fans haven't been tested in over a decade. How would they know if we're bandwagoners or not?

Answer: They wouldn't. Argument = null and void at that point.

Kinda the opposite of what the thread is but it was too funny for me to ignore sharing it.

During game 4 my friend (a diehard Wings fan) some of his buddies and myself went to a sports bar and watched the game. We sat next to a table that was very drunk and loud.

The Wings scored to basically win them the game and my buddy and I always go apes*** when the Wings score and the rest of the table was cheering as well. After we were done celebrating one of the guys at the table said, "How can you cheer for a bunch of European *******." My diehard friend and I ignored the comment because we've been hearing that type of s*** for the last 15 years but one of the other guys at our table said something I will never forget.

"I know, what are they even doing over here. I mean how dare they even let them play in this league, it's not even their continent. Stay over on your own continent, all Europeans should be banned from the NHL."

About 5 minutes later Cleary gets stopped by Hiller and the guy cheers.

My buddy says to him, "How dare that European goalie stop one of our own hard working Canadian boys. And what kind of name is Teemu anyway. Stupid Europeans"

OT

They used to play "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies" as the opposing team was taking the ice at the Joe, then some heavy metal high energy song for the Wings. I wonder why they stopped doing that.

I hate with the passion of a thousand fiery suns the "Wings bought the Cup" BS comment.

Oh, so the Wings are the only team now that pays it's players? Every other team in the league makes it's players play for free? Sorry pal, but every team that has ever won has "bought the Cup".

Also, if you don't "buy the Cup" then your GM isn't trying hard enough so go sit in your sad little emo corner and cry moar.

I had a really s***ty day at work.
