Hossa to be re-signed after postseason

A. Drapes is not going to retire - he WILL finish his contract

B. why don't you people get that his contract was signed after 35???? It would still count against the cap - all the more reason we DON'T want him to retire, then we'd be down a body and STILL have the cap hit.... no thanks

man you are quick sheesh

In case you missed it BTP this was aimed at you!

Don't bother. The guy is obviously still butthurt about:

Losing the '08 Stanley Cup Finals to the Red Wings

Losing Hossa to the Red Wings

Being down 2-0 in the '09 Stanley Cup Finals to the Red Wings

He avoided every direct question I sent him in his ridiculous thread yesterday that was ultimately deleted.

All he does is make snide remarks and takes jabs, then ducks under his bridge.

Yes I'm listening to this too. Cannot tell if they were just speculating or they have some source on this? Doesn't sound reasonable that something would leak from the Wings in the middle of the SCF....they need to focus on the games and not have Hossa, or any other unsigned players worried about this right now...

Perhaps it's another head game deal. Make the Pittsburgh fans think that Hossa has betrayed them even more so they boo him more at tonight's game, which pumps up Hossa into having a hat trick, making Bettman's baby boy cry at the refs about hats.

I think you're exactly right. I assume Maltby, Homer, and possibly even Draper may have told Holland they are leaving. I also assume that Lilja will be traded. Hypothetically speaking, if Lilja and Draper were gone, that would clear roughly 3 million. They could be replaced by Helm and Ericsson which would work out to roughly a 1.5 to 2 million dollar savings per year. Hudler and Sammy would be gone too, imo.

It may be the other way around...

Perhaps Ilitch and Holland asked them (Maltby & Homer) to up their dedication to the Wings and retire following this season in order to do what is best for the future of the team. In exchange they both get cushy executive jobs next year earning the same salary they would have made as players - Ilitch has enough money to make them an offer they can't refuse.

The supposed Hossa signing is being mentioned all over NHL Home Ice on XM as well. They're just quoting that SI journalist that was linked on page 1, though. Kenny Holland has always maintained the stance that he does not discuss contracts with agents during the playoffs. Hope it's true, but I'll believe it when I see it. I'm thinking if Hossa finally gets his Cup ring, then perhaps he takes a big hometown discount. Time will tell.

I think people forget that Pittsburgh was always second fiddle to Detroit. I don't remember the article, but earlier this season Holland, Hossa and his agent (Winter I believe?) confirmed that Detroit was trying hard to work out a deal with Hossa before he was traded to Pittsburgh but Atlanta wanted more than Detroit was willing to give up. They were also negotiating a contract extension in the trade talks as well and apparently Hossa agreed to terms pending a trade going through. Hossa always wanted to be here. I'm sure he was happy with Pittsburgh being the next best thing last year as they were second best after all, but Detroit has been his destination for awhile. He wants to win and he was born to play Detroit's style of hockey. I don't know why this is so shocking. Even last year the day or day after we signed him Holland said this is a 1-year deal that gives them time to work out a multi-year deal. Hossa will retire a Wing.

Eklund is reporting it? Well, see ya Hossa. Was nice knowing you (and for the record that's an [e5])

I can't understand this lack of respect for Eklund. Fine, he's been a bit off once or twice, but when it comes to rumours, the man is money in the bank.

IMO, that's right up there with the fans laughing after Salami got rocked by Stuart in Game 7.

That picture is epic. It's been my wallpaper since it was posted some weeks back. Pointing and laughing at an injured duck..priceless.

Cutting Draper saves $1.6 million. Maybe he got Nick to take a pay cut too. And we know Chelios shouldn't be back. Holmstrom may be gone too with the emergence of Franzen and Cleary. Gotta start moving some of these kids into the lineup

Its false says Tick Tack. Ansar Khan with the details.

Mlive

The response I expected since Kenny doesn't talk about contracts in the playoffs.

Please tell me that's sarcasm. God, I want that to be sarcasm.

There's a website with Eklund's record (and ripping on him in general), and his record is.. well, it's god-awful. Eklund pisses in the wind and occasionally he hits a passerby, but it usually just ends up on his shoes.

this is the only way I see it possible - Holstrom and Matby retire and Hossa takes 4.3 or less a year to stay, then we trade Meech.....

Check it out

Nice work but even this wont cut it. The minimum legal roster is 22 players. Under this scenario, we would need to sign two more players to the league minimum which would put us about .7 over the cap.

What's this I hear that Bettman is going to increase the salary cap next year by 12 million? I mean if he does that, then there's no problem. We won't lose anyone, and I"m all for signing hossa. Who in the league can match our talent as it is?

Signing Hossa is pretty much impossible unless he takes a SIGNIFICANT discount. There's also no gurantee that guys like Abdelkader and Leino can fill in for Samuelsson and Hudler. Draper's 1.6 million CANNOT come off the cap because he signed it after turning 35, so people need to stop suggesting it.

I'm a little confused about Abdelkader's contract though. Some sites say 850K and others say 660K... Regardless, I don't see a way for this to happen.

Noone really knows what will happen, other than Sammy will almost certainly get an offer the Wings will not match, Hudler is very likely to get one as well. Cheli most likely goes elsewhere as he has said he does not feel he is done yet, I do not think he can accept a small enough contract to satisfy any reduction, perhaps Chicago? I recall reading an article where he said he would like to return there at some point, although they boo'd him there I was told because he closed his chili bar there?

Anyways the rumors are all over the place on sport sites like SI, on radio shows and on TSN so there probably is some validity behind it and who knows what has happened behind closed doors.

I say let us cheer on our team to Victory in the SCF and worry about this Hossa stuff once he has his cup firmly in hand.
