Dream Team

Well, the 2008-09 season's over. But there's still a lot of news about it. And there's still a lot of debate about which team is the best. So I thought, well, for $56.7m, what is the best team you could put together?

So I looked, and assembled a 22-man roster for just under $55.1m leaving about $1.6m in cap space. Here's the roster I came up with; see if you can do better based on 08-09 cap hits.

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Ryan

Lucic/Malkin/Parise

Kesler/M.Richards/Kessel

Clowe/Helm/Cleary

Dorsett

Lidstrom/Keith

Kronwall/Wideman

Ericsson/Lilja

Meech

Osgood

S.Mason

EDIT: Minor changes to roster due to miscalculations based on accidentally using next year's cap hit instead of this year's.

Dustin Brown - Pavel Datsyuk - Scottie Hartnell

Sean Avery - Mike Richards - Colby Armstrong

Matt Cooke - Darren Helm - Jordin Tootoo

Rick Rypien - Zenon Konopka - Patrick Kaleta

Ed Jovanovsk - Willie Mitchell

Sheldon Souray - Barrett Jackman

Jordan Leopold - Matt Walker

Cam Ward

Chris Osgood

I'd love to see the mayhem that team would put on the ice.

Zetterberg (6.0833) - Parise (3.125) - Kane (3.725)

Semin (4.6) - Backstrom (2.4) - Franzen (3.955)

Eriksson (1.600) - M. Koivu (3.25) - Giroux (.822)

Lucic (.850) - Brassard (1.247) - Voracek (1.271)

James Neal (.822)

Doughty (3.475) - Bouwmeester (4.875)*

Burns (3.55) - Seabrook (3.500)

Volchenkov (2.5) - Keith (1.475)

Ericsson (.900)

S. Mason (.905)

Varlamov (.822)

Total Cap Hit = $54.277

*= went with the last contract signed (might be a UFA or RFA).

A good mix of scorers (Kane, Parise, Eriksson, Franzen, Semin, Voracek) and playmakers (Zetterberg, Backstrom, Giroux, Brassard) on each forward line with a mixture of defensively responsible forwards (Zetterberg, Koivu, Eriksson, Parise, Franzen). Defense is big and physical, but completely reliable at all positions. Goaltending is young and unproven, but unmistakably talented. Reserves are young and talented. $2.423 million left over for mid-season tweaks.

No spares? What happens if someone gets injured? That could get really ugly really quickly. I couldn't help but notice that your team has fewer players than mine, and less depth, for more money.

And the wrong contracts for Franzen and Zetterberg.

I didnt know that it was a competition. However, my team does have all 3 Hart trophy finalists, all 3 Pearson trophy finalists, 2 Selke trophy finalists, 2 Calder trophy finalists, a Vezina trophy finalist, the Richard trophy winner, the Art Ross trophy winner, the reigning Conn Smythe winner and the previous Conn Smythe winner, 2 Norris trophy winners, not to mention 15 Stanley Cup rings. My team scored 352 goals and 993 points in the regular season, and I have 6 of the top 10 scorers in the post season. I can count the number of players under 6' on one hand, and they all love to hit, fight, score, and win. Depth? I'm not too worried about it.

I really like thisd roster. Excellent balance of skill, size, and team work. Replace Malkin with Getzlaf and this team will be simply unstoppable.

My team would look ALOT like this... Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lucic, Richards, Toews, and Lidstrom would ALL be there.

Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Ovechkin

Hossa/Lecavalier/Franzen

Kovalchuk/E.Staal/Thornton

J.Staal/Malkin/Iginla

Lidstrom/Chara

Pronger/Niedermayer

Phaneuf/Souray

Luongo

Miller

new defense coach

A quick estimate says that roster would be about 60-70 million over the cap. And honestly...if you are creating a dream team while ignoring the cap...why include Sheldon Souray while leaving out Duncan Keith?

Unless you're using Souray for powerplay use ONLY, then yeah, there's no point. Even then, the other 5 do just fine on the PP.

Zetterberg Datyuk Makin

Ovie Crosbay Hossa

Kreci E.Stall Bergeron

Franzen Helm LaRose

Lidstrom Raffy

Stuart Pronger

Ericsson Schenn

Dion

Backstom/Ozzie

I didn't add it all up, but I get about 40 million from just Dats, Hoss, Lids, Crosby and Ovie, and that doesn't count some guys with decent 08-09 cap hits like Rafalski, Pronger, etc. No way that fits under the cap.

One thing I do like here is the goalie tandem. I'd go with Backstrom in the regular season, then Ozzie in the playoffs! Ozzie/Mason is cheaper, but Mason's not a sure thing as of yet, see Raycroft, Andrew...I'd rather take guys with a track record of more than a season.

did thread not say whats "my" dream team? and nobody said anything about the salary cap

I did. In the original post, I said "for $56.7m, what is the best team you can put together?"

If I were simply assembling a roster of active players with no regard for cost, it would have been put together as such:

Ovechkin/Zetterberg/Datsyuk

Parise/Malkin/M.Richards

Hossa/Getzlaf/Iginla

Elias/E.Staal/Thornton

Toews

Lidstrom/Keith

Boyle/Chara

Niedermayer/Weber

Wideman

Brodeur

Osgood
