Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted July 29, 2009 LOL. Is this Holland's idea of being our 4th line gritty forward? My goodness... I see season ticket sales disappearing even faster than last years. This is getting sickening. I have an idea Kenny, take that $2,500,000 check for Williams, wack yourself in the head with it for being dumb... then come to your senses and offer that to Mike Grier. mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Personally I don't hate the guy I jsut think he was always overrated and at this contract value he would be significantly overpaid on this team. We dont need a forward to play the point on our second PP unit and he really doesnt add that much up front you couldnt get with any number of other FAs. I would much rather see the Wings bring back Bertuzzi if they are dead set on bringing someone back. $2.5M is ridiculous, in our cap situation, to give to Williams. Personally I wouldnt take him for anymore than $1M. Even at $1M i would probably be pissed he even takes up a roster spot on the Wings. I just think he is overrated and not at all what we need to round out our team.

Manoir 70 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 He does not address our needs. We need a guy like Mike Grier, not Jason Williams. Exactly.
Mors 201 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 I seriously hope this is a ******* joke...no sense whatsoever in this. And no, we don't need ******* scoring depth. I don't know why people are so scared about lack of scoring on this team.
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 (edited) And no, we don't need ******* scoring depth. I don't know why people are so scared about lack of scoring on this team. Because the Wings lost 1/3 of it's offense from last season. You can say Hossa was a rental and that is fine, but Samuelsson and Hudler provided very important offensive depth in 2008; both in the regular season and in the playoffs. Holland wants an offensive guy (plus a grinder) - so do many posters here. Why is that so hard to understand? Edited July 29, 2009 by egroen
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Everyone knows that scoring depth is crucial come playoff time. You absolutely need to generate goals from your third line and get a few randoms from your 4th here and there. Im not saying that Helm and Leino wont be able to do it but you definitely want some more scoring depth up front than is currently on this roster so you have options on no one feels the burden of all the pressure once you get passed your top guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen. I don't know why people are so scared about lack of scoring on this team. Simple Because outside of 3 players the wings don't have anyone that a sane person would call a good scoring forward in our top 6. We need atleast 1 more bonified scorer to round out the top 6 to get it up to snuff, not a hossa level guy, but someone who can put it in the net 20 times a year. I am not retarded to think we wil replace all 88 goals we lost, but, we cant just hope that what we have will fill the holes in the roster. A grinder would be nice, but, we are more hurting in the GF colum after this season's loses than the GA. Edited July 29, 2009 by Shaman464
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 And Jason Williams is your offensive guy or your grinder? good luck with that in either role. God I hope not. But if the Wings can spend a total of $2.5m and get Williams + Grier... it's at least an improvement.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 J-Will back on the point on the PP, that would be just... awesome. I'd really like to witness that again. And I needn't remind anyone that Big Willy Stylez has never attempted anything remotely resembling hockey in the playoffs.

This team allowed the 10th most goals against last season with 240 allowed...solve that problem and they wont have to worry about those 88 goals.

RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 I find this very hard to believe.. at least the 2.5 mil part of it..... IMO Hudler is light years ahead of Williams and we weren't willing to go beyond 3 mil for him, but we'd go all the way to 2.5 for J Wil? Sounds improbable to me. Not to mention, in terms of what's left on the market... there are a number of better options that can probably be had for cheaper..

Motown4013 350 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Just for arguements sake...Sammy had 40 points last year- Williams had 47 points. Thats his 2nd highest year in career points....and with Columbus!! 2.5 is alot...but Sammy got more for less in Van ( and was HORRID at the point on the PP) We'll see when there is a reliable announcement

mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Samuelsson signed $2.5M/yr for three years. I thought that was way over paying Samuelsson but I will give the guy some credit, he does score some timely goals. The guy shoudl produce a hell of a lot more than he does though. He has the talent but he's just not consistent. It looks like he's not always that confident of a player. When he's hot he can be very good.

REDHASEK 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 Williams, who played for the Wings in 2000-07 before being traded to Chicago, reportedly also is considering joining the Continental Hockey League in Russia. He split last season between Atlanta and Columbus. Here's a portion of Craig Custance's blog on the subject: "I'm not going to close the door on (the KHL)," Williams told SportingNews.com. "I know over there they're really trying to compete with the NHL. It's a great league." There is still some hope! That he may not comeback at all...
