Jason Williams Offered 1 Year Contract

here's the rest of the article from MLIVE Snapshots:

"The guys are great, the organization is really turned around," he said. "Everything was first class there."

Thanks to Christy Hammond for the link...

And file this one under "meh" for me. Williams posted 47 points last year, but he's never regained the sort of consistency which helped him post 21 goals and 58 points during the 2005-2006 season. At 28, he's still inconsistent, is slow if he doesn't focus on moving his feet, and while he still possesses a sort of Mikael Samuelsson-style scrappy edge, Mike Babcock certainly found out the hard way that he doesn't show it all that often.

My gut says that he'll take the KHL money and run with it. He'd obviously look good on the point on the Wings' PP and would be able to produce a 15-goal, 40-point season, but taking a pay cut from $2.2 million to around $1 million (given that the Wings want two forwards) doesn't strike me as something he'd like to do

We ran him out of here for a reason. He was the magical right hand shot on the PP point before Sammy took over, and as bad as Logohunter was back there, we never ever wanted Williams back. Bad call at any price and positively insane at $2.5M.

I never harbored any ill feelings towards Williams, and wouldn't mind seeing him back for $1 to $1.5 mill, but for $2.5 mill

Agreed. I don't have anything against him or anything. He just never did anything that really made him stand out to me.

If he helps fill some of the offensive void left by our FA losses, then I'm fine with him signing here. I would not, however, be fine with him signing for 2.5 million.

It's not yet set in stone. There is still a chance he may end up still playing for the Blue Jakets again cause he liked it there last year.

I hope this isn't true... I hope Hulder stays if this is ture....Because I think 2.5 Million for a 1 year deal is ******* insane...I would rather have Matts or Mike....or someone other then this player!

Red Wings consider bringing Jason Williams back into fold

The Sporting News's Craig Custance reports that the Detroit Red Wings have made a one-year contract offer to free agent and former Red Wing Jason Williams:

July 29, The Sporting News: Former Columbus forward Jason Williams is part of a group of talented players still on the free agent market who would be a nice boost for teams looking to add scoring depth. Williams, who scored 19 goals last season for the Thrashers and Blue Jackets, is also a very useful player on the power play. The addition of Williams in mid-season helped get Columbus into the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. I caught Jason on his cell for a few minutes today before he hit the golf course. He has a one-year offer to return to the Detroit Red Wings where he started his NHL career but is also weighing the option of playing in the KHL.

"I'm not going to close the door on that," Williams told SportingNews.com. "I know over there they're really trying to compete with the NHL. It's a great league."

Williams still has a home in the Detroit area, one he bought right before he was traded to the Blackhawks. He's renting it out now, and only lived in it for about six months before he left Detroit. The Red Wings would be a natural fit for Williams.

"I'd be going back to a spot I'm familiar with," Williams said. "I know the system they like to play - puck possession, good defense."

He said he loved his time in Columbus, and would like to return to the Blue Jackets but hasn't gotten an offer from GM Scott Howson. Even so, he had great things to say about his 39-game stint with the Blue Jackets.

"The guys are great, the organization is really turned around," he said. "Everything was first class there."

There is still hope that he my not sign here but sign with the Blue Jackets or Sign in the KHL. Thats hope he does one of those things and not resign with the Red Wings!

Trust me, while I'm not willing to give up vital body parts like mmamolo, I do not want Williams here either. He would be on the bottom of my list.

Are you guys really falling for this $2.5m crap?

Kenny is the best GM in the NHL, I do not think you guys understand how hard these guys work, and how much they know.

I would be willing to bet my bank account that Kenny did NOT offer him $2.5m.

For less I would take him, he looked pretty good with the Jackets.

I can't find a link online to any reports saying the offer is for 2.5 million dollars a year. The only dollar value I've seen was when George Malik speculated the contract would be around 1 million based on the Wings' desire to sign a grinder as well.

Edit: Any link aside from the original one on Hendricks Hockey

Same, it is def not $2.5m. That is a bogus rumor.

I agree with most here about the 2.5 mill contract. No way Ken Holland pays Williams that much. I would say 1.5-1.9 mill at the most. Either way I have no interest in seeing Jason Williams back in the winged wheel. He does not address our needs. We need a guy like Mike Grier, not Jason Williams.
