whats the point of scoring goals if we look like wimps while doing it! i dont want other teams taking our lunch money in the parking lot after the game

Yeah, we need Downey to be Dats' personal bodyguard on and off the ice. Who knows what evils lurk in this world that a goon might solve. I think someone was right in another thread where they said Batman, after all.

I must say it is too bad if they can't bring Downey back...especially if he can be had for 500k. I realize he is a very one dimensional player, but I really got the sense he is a great locker room guy. Not to mention the fans love the energy he brought to the game. I think it was a home game against Dallas last year that he was the only thing worth cheering that night at the Joe.

If you don't want a grinder which we know you don't then stay out of the grinder thread and stop trying to stir s*** up with the people who want one. You clearly have never played hockey in your life so you won't understand the importance of grinders.

Don't expect any moves until at least September:

With Ville Leino, Darren Helm, Jonathan Ericsson, and Jimmy Howard poised to full seasons in Detroit, and Patrick Eaves and Jason Williams signed to help offset the Wings' free agent losses, Holland believes that his work is done, at least until September, when he'll likely add a thirteenth forward and reassess his team's eight-man logjam on defense.

So, for the most part, we really are looking at our set lineup.

13th forward toughness

experienced grinder: Dan Hinote

decent enforcer: Andre Roy

reclamation project: Mark Bell

reality: evan mcgrath

I would love any of these guys. I really think the wings could turn Bell around and get his head on straight. Andre Roy? Sure why not as the 13th forward its not like Mlatby really brings anything special anymore, at least Roy brings one think he can do well. Hinote is a good hitter and fights sometimes so thats not a bad option either. I hope its not Mcgrath, I want Oulahen way more. He kind of hits and is a great PK/character player.

I'd love for Bell to get an invite to training camp. (Fingers crossed).

I totally agree with the Mark Bell invite. The guy is in the same situation as Eaves (used to be a 20+ goal scorer) but can also throw his weight around and beat the living s*** out of people.

Oh, Shazbaat. I have never played hockey and I want a grinder, but now I'm not sure if I can post in this thread to say that I would like to see Bell get an invite to camp. I don't want to see him signed without a good look-see (by Holland and Babcock, who have played hockey), but I do think that he might be worth a shot.

Just more confirmation via MLive that we won't see any moves for a while:

Red Wings GM Ken Holland has officially ceased free agent-shopping for the present moment, and the Free Press's George Sipple reports that Holland plans on spending August doing what most GM's do at this time of year--golf. He's taking some friends to the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in southern Oregon, for starters:

No you post away I really don't care. You seem to know that hockey isn't just a game of goal scoring. Shoreline on the other hand just can't grasp the fact that a tough grinder is a plus for a team. You seem to know what you're talking about. I wasn't saying noone who hasn't played hockey would understand, I meant it in teh case of Shoreline that must be the reason. Sorry about that.

What about Brad Isbister? 6'4 225 righty

He was with Vancouver a year before last, then fell off the map. I wouldn't mind Brad at all. But i think he's done, No real chance for the NHL. He played in the Swiss league last year. His numbers were not overly impressive for being in a much less respectable league.

Shoreline likes to stir things up. It keeps things interesting. Consider him your summer entertainment. Not as great as fireworks; better than chiggars.

Hey nutjob, try actually reading what I responded to. The suggestion was made, likely in sarcasm, that Datsyuk would be beaten up in the parking lot without someone to protect him. So, in turn, I responded in sarcasm. Not everything has to be as serious as you, and obviously you know s*** about hockey if you assume to understand it one must play it on ice. It's like someone saying, hey, you don't know s*** about the US, you're not on our soil! Maybe you'll understand how stupid it is, maybe not. Clearly though you're upset about how I post and mock goon-lovers like yourself. You should probably take a cue from GMR and wuss out. Seriously, you come off as a whining baby because someone can so readily and logically dismiss the religious-like belief that this team needs enforcers/goons.

Amazing how certain posters here are trying to start flame wars with others over this enforcer s***. Just put him on ignore everyone. Works for me.

I just put everyone on ignore. Granted, it's a mental ignore, but it works well. I just don't read the posts that make me go "aargh", "ugh", or "forpity'ssakeisthispersonforreal?" -unless there's some witty repartee going, then I grab the popcorn.

Anyway, grinders and enforcers are not the same thing, although one can certainly be both. I like to see two things in a player: 1) that he know his role and do his best at it, and 2) that he also work on other areas of his game to improve them.

IOW, if an enforcer is a good enforcer and can work on his shot to help put in a goal here and there, then he's good in my book. If a sniper can be a good sniper, and also work on his defensive game, than he's better than if he's just a sniper.

Players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg are twice as valuable to the team because they do this with their defensive play. Mac (in his prime) did it as well being a good enforcer and putting in goals.

What I want to see is a team that is not only well-rounded as a whole, with all of the necessary roles filled, but also one in which each member strives to improve all aspects of his game to at least some degree.

So, yeah, I want to see a grinder and an enforcer, but I want to see good ones who can play well for the purpose of icing a well-rounded team.

At this point in the season, it's not a question of whom we want, it's a question of whom we can afford and who is left. If we are trying to fill spots with $500k guys, then we may have to fill them with role players who are lacking in other areas.

So at this point, just to fill the roster, I would settle for someone who is just a good grinder. If he can kick someone's butt, that's icing on the cake. If he can score, that's the little candies that spell out words that we all buy so we can eat the leftovers when no one is looking.

For being on ignore, GMR makes a lot of posts toward me without directly mentioning me.

And I have never criticized this team signing a "grinder". In fact, I've praised Drake countless times. You'll find the same people unable to comprehend this much and just assume that because someone logically recognizes this team wins just fine without enforcers/goons or that type of sideshow having any sort of prominence, that I somehow dislike toughness altogether. Oh yes, I hated Drake. I also hate Mike Richards and would never ever want him on the Wings. Milan Lucic? Damn that guy could never make it on this team, since he can't score. I don't know anything about hockey so this is my 100% serious analysis here.

Don't worry, I'll respond to you once every couple of months just to let you know that your old arch enemy still cares about you somewhat. :hehe:

I just hope you and micah don't decide to also hijack this thread like you did the other one. You should read it from a 3rd person's standpoint sometime to see what kind of mess you guys have created.
